Hester Prynne's Battle

The seventeenth century is a time of punishment and death to those who do not conform to Puritan laws. The young, tall, and beautiful Hester Prynne lives in this intolerable culture in Boston, Massachusetts. In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne battles society and revealed sin, and emerges as a capable, respectable woman.

In this novel Hawthorne sees Hester as a victim for several reasons. Hester is a victim to her youth because she lives in an age where she is forced to marry without love. In England, Hester's family is wealthy, but they lose their money, so her parents arrange for her to marry a scholar, Roger Chillingsworth. Hester is forced to marry this man so she will survive. She does not commit to him on her own accord. Chillingsworth marries the young and passionate Hester knowing she did not return his love. Roger admits she is unsuitable for him saying, " I a man of thought…what had I to do with youth and beauty like thine own! (Hawthorne 71). He knows he is not suited for the role of her husband, but selfishly he takes advantage of this situation.

Hester faces further adversity in Boston with Chillingworth's acts of stupidity, and her lover's weakness. Baym describes her situation by writing, "She was sent to Massachusetts in advance of her husband; he had decided to emigrate, not she" (64). Hester is a victim to Roger's stupidity because he sends his wife to the colony while he remains in Amsterdam. Chillingsworth fails to realize the colony is a dangerous place for anyone, especially a young woman. Also after falling in love with Dimmesdale, she suffers from his weakness because he is unprepared to be a husband or a father. Arthur does not have the strength to claim responsibility for Pearl, so he leaves all the blame for Hester. His decisions leave him with an enormous amount of grief, and a terrible burden for her to face alone.Order Custom Hester Prynne Analysis paper

Through Hester's dilemmas and her revealed sin she becomes a stronger person who lives through truth. Baym writes describing her, "So strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength" (66). She learns from her sin, and she grows strong as a result of accepting her punishment. She fully acknowledges her sin, and boldly displays it to the world. Hester's salvation lies in truth because she embroiders her symbol with elaborateness, and she wears the scarlet A long after she could have removed it. Hester proclaims to Dimmesdale, "Truth was the one virtue which I might have held fast, and did hold fast, through all extremity" (Hawthorne 10). Even though Hester is a victim she turns herself into a woman who helps others, and is respected by them.

Hester Prynne is a courageous woman who battles society and revealed sin, and emerges as a capable, respectable woman in The Scarlet Letter. When times are plagued with trouble for Hester she does not cower down, but she stays dedicated. She does not let any barriers keep her from remaining a model citizen.

Should Israel be Muslim or Jewish?

That's a very interesting question, however I am unable to make this decision because I believe that neither of these two religions give those people the hope for the future that is found in the bible.

I feel the question that is more relevant is "How can a person (not a nation) know which religion is right?" The best way to do this is to consider seriously the following questions about religion.

1) On what are its teachings based? Are they from god or are they largely from men? The Bible says at Timothy 16, 17- All scriptures are inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

For Example the bible does not teach that the human soul is immortal, to the contrary the Bible says at Ecclesiastes 5 "For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten".

) Consider whether it is making known the name of God.

Jesus said in prayer to god "I made your name manifest to the men you gave me out of the world"(John 176) Also Jesus declared "It is Jehovah your god you must worship and to him alone you must render sacred service"(Matt 410). Has your religion taught you that 'it is Jehovah you must worship'? Have you come to know the Person identified by that name-his purposes, his activities, his qualities-so that you can confidently draw close to him?

) Is it largely ritualistic or is it a way of life?

God strongly disapproves of religion that is merely formalism. (Isa. 115-17) True religion upholds the Bible's standard of morality and clean speech instead of weakly going along with popular trends. (1 Cor. 5-1; Eph. 5-5) Its members reflect the fruits of God's spirit in their lives. So, those who adhere to true worship can be identified because they sincerely endeavor to apply Bible standards in their lives not only at their places of meeting but in their family life, at their secular work, in school, and in recreation.

4) Do its members truly love one another?

Jesus said "By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you truly have love among yourselves." (John 15) Such love reaches across racial, social, and national boundaries drawing people together in genuine brotherhood. So strong is this love that it sets them apart as being truly different. When the nations go to war, who have enough love for their Christian brothers in other lands that they refuse to take up arms and kill them? That is what early Christians of the first Century did and is what true Christians continue to do today.

So in answer to the question, "Should Israel be Muslim or Jewish", I believe each person has the right to choose their own religion, because after all their everlasting future depends on it. The Bible is a precious gift from God. It is like a letter from a loving father to his children. It tells us the truth about God - who he is and what he stands for. It explains how to cope with problems and how to find true happiness. The Bible alone tells us what we must do to please God. Psalm 11-; Isaiah 4817, 18.

Two Fathers and Two Sons

In the two poems ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± by Theodore Roethke (page 1) and ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± by Robert Hayden (page ) father is the main character. Roethke¡¯s poem ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± portrays the scene of a rough dance between father and son. The poem, ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is about the memory of a father rising up early on cold Sunday mornings to warm the rooms. Both poems portray a man¡¯s childhood memories with his father though in different styles.

The first poem ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz,¡± is in a conventional form which has four stanzas with each stanza consist of four lines. For example, in ¡°The whiskey on your breath/could make a small boy dizzy; /But I hung on like death/Such waltzing was not easy.¡± words ¡°breath¡±, ¡°death¡± and ¡°dizzy¡±, ¡°easy¡± rhyme, and so on in the following stanzas. Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is written in the free verse style. ¡°Free verse is just what it says it is, poetry that is written without proper rules about form, rhythm, meter, etc.¡± (Free Verse Lesson 4) It is ¡°to create new rhythm-as the expression of new moods-and not to copy old rhythm.¡± (VI) Hayden showed his feeling with an image of father rising up early on Sunday morning, and warming the room for his family.

¡°Imagination can use the simplest diction, because it has got the truth found what can appeal to the right mind of man, because it is strong in life, thought and language. Rich poetic vocabulary is then unnecessary.¡±(50) both poems here have present clear pictures of their childhood. In ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡±, ¡°Whiskey¡± on father¡¯s breath is one of many clues that this is actually not real Waltz and ¡°his dance is more a romp through the house with a stop in the kitchen and another at the boy¡¯s bedroom, where presumably he is unceremoniously dumped into bed.¡±(Page 14) We can see the disapproval from mother¡¯s ¡°countenance¡± which ¡°could not unfrown itself¡±. But she does nothing to stop them, so we can imagine that they all enjoy this. ¡°Then you waltzed me off to bed/Still clinging to your shirt¡± such simple words leads us to the unconditional love of the small boy. While the ¡°Tactile images of heat and cold inform Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± in which the speaker¡¯s father wakes up early ¡°in the blue black cold¡± to make ¡°banked fires blaze.¡±¡± (Page 6) He does his duty silently, and tried to support his family. But ¡°no one ever thanked him¡±, and his home is still plagued by ¡°chronic angers¡±. What a touching image! The image in Hayden¡¯s poem is somewhat more ¡°cold¡±.Cheap Custom Essays on Two Fathers and Two Sons

¡°The tone of a poem, like the tone of our speech, implies the speaker¡¯s attitude(s) towards the poem¡¯s subject. The speaker¡¯s attitude can sometimes be subtly expressed, and we need to carefully study the poem¡¯s wording; rhythm and images to understand the tone.¡±(lyric.htm) so that¡¯s why I compare the tone in the end. There are different interpretations of the tone of ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡±; some critics have seen this boy¡¯s memories as a recollection of a time of abuse. In our text book, it is said that the tone of the poem seems nostalgic, though not sentimentally so. ¡°The boy, now a man, remembers his father as ¡°papa,¡± clearly an affectionate term. The high-spirited bouncing rhythm of the poem seems to counter any indication that the father¡¯s drinking or the son¡¯s fears are its central concerns.¡±(Page 14) On the other hand, Hayden¡¯s poem is filled with guilty. ¡°He regrets how unappreciative of his father he was as a child.¡±(Page ) Children often become so boiled and self-involved that they take for granted what their parents give to them. ¡°What did I know, what did I know/of love¡¯s austere and lonely offices?¡± There will be a time that we realize their sacrifices and it is often too late to realize.

In conclusion, ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± presents a conventional form that uses humorous languages and ¡°drunken¡± images to present an unforgettable memory that a man ¡°danced¡± with his father. Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is a free verse style poem that uses simple languages and tactile images to convey the melancholy memories that a man ¡°misinterpreted¡± his father. In each poem, different form, image and tone is used, but the theme of the complicated love between the son and the father is conveyed through both poems.

In the future I plan to be a nurse. My major right now is nursing. I want to become a nurse because I care about people. I don't like to see people in pain. My plan so far is to attend college and do the best I can to get into the nursing program. I have been told by many people that becoming a nurse isn't easy, but they haven't scared me away from pursuing my dream. In order for me to get in I have to have at least a B average or I will be turned down. I promise myself that I would do it and I will because I don't make empty promises. I believe that I can do it because I have many people in my family who are nurses if they can become a nurse then I have no doubt in my mind that I can also.

Once I am in the nursing program, I will try to do my best. After I complete college I will attend a nursing school. In the end I hope that I will become a registered nurse hopefully, I will get a job in a hospital or a nursing home. I haven't decided to do nursing for the money, so I will take a job anywhere that needs me, no matter what the pay is just as long as I can make a difference. Once I am settled in my job, I plan to continue my education. There are always advances in medicine so it's important that I am aware of it. If I have a lot of education and skill, then I'll always be able to get a job. My mother tells me that the farther I go in getting an education, the better my chances are for success and comfortable living.

I have been interested in medicine for as long as I can remember. I would watch all the television programs that have to do with medicine. The shows that I would watch were about things such as major surgery, birth, and emergency situations like a shooting or car accident. I always wondered what it would feel like to save a person's life. I wondered what it feels like to be those doctors and nurses. So when I become a nurse, I will finally know what it feels like. I first thought about becoming a nurse when I was watching a movie about a woman with cancer. I wanted so very much to help ease her pain. I watched how the doctor and the nurses looked after her and I knew that I could do the same.

Once I have been a nurse for a good long time, I am going to start my own business that will take care of individuals that aren't very fortunate. I plan to work on under privileged people; I have heard many stories of people not being treated because they do not have the means to pay. I don't believe that because someone doesn't have enough money, they don't deserve a chance to be healthy the same way as a person with money. I have seen programs about children that are very sick and they just need a little caring to get better, but their parents don't have much money so they can't afford to go to the doctor. I once watched a show about a woman who died when she only needed a special injection to keep her alive, but she couldn't because there wasn't any money left for her to receive the drug she needed. When I am a nurse I intend to work on people even if they don't have the money for medical attention.

My life plans are very important to me; it's has basically given me a reason for being here on earth. My purpose will be to give people caring and understanding. The lives of people will be in my hands and I hope that I will help make them live a long and healthy life. I will be very happy when I have succeeded in doing all I have planned. If I only end up being a nurse that is still an accomplishment in its own.

This book A Child Called "It" by David Pelzer is a survival book. David Pelzer, the child, in A Child Called "It" has some rough times with his mother.

In the beginning he has a normal family and his mother loves him but soon all of that changes when his mother starts to drink. When she changes, David's mother beats him & starves him. When David goes to school with no lunch, & when he comes to school in the morning he takes desserts and lunches from his classmates. When the principle finds out, he calls David's mother and when David gets home she beats him.

One time his mother made him sit in the bathroom with the door closed and has a bucket of ammonia & Clorox was in it and he had a hard time breathing. Another time, his mother tells him he's getting timed to do chores to get food and if he wasn't on time she would kill him. One day while he was doing the dishes and his father was at work he turned around and saw his mother with a knife in her hand and said he took too long and was past the time limit she had told him. It really scared him.

David's little brother was once on his mother's leg, so she tried to get him off and then she fainted. She fell forward and the knife cut a line on David's stomach. Everything went black, and when he woke up he saw that his mom was cleaning him up and that the cut was bleeding constantly. His mother was training to be a nurse before she met his father so David didn't worry. David's mother was nice to him hat day but it didn't last. The next day he woke up and it was mostly the same but the mother took it a bit easier on David.

David stopped believing in god for a while after his mother almost drowned him on Halloween. The rest of the book is more of the same, with David getting punished more and more and finally one day when David went to school his teacher had him sent up to the nurses office. Like usual he was sent up to get checked on bruises and cuts and every time, he had an excuse for them. Whenever the nurse found a couple new marks and she always wrote them down. Finally, on that day she told the principle and he called the police.

The policeman came around lunch-time and David was called to eat lunch in the teachers cafeteria. There was the policeman and the teachers, nurse and principle there. David told the policeman the story and the policeman took him to the police station and said he would call David's mother, David freaked out and said " No if you call her and tell her, when I get she will beat me." The police man said he wasn't going home. The teachers said good-bye to David. They called the mother to inform her and David was sent to an orphanage.

THE END……

This book A Child Called "It" by David Pelzer is, in my opinion a survival book. It was a hard story to read because of how David was treated by his own mom.

The first sentence really got my attention, and I thought this book was really good and was very sad. I think this book was great overall. If I were to grade this book I would give it an A+. I recommend this book to anyone older than 8.

Nonsmokers tend to think just that smokers should consider more about them, but they also should understand smokers.@ Some companies tried prohibiting their employees from smoking. Thanks to this attempt, the air in these companies became clean and nonsmokers were glad, though the number of smokers who left work to smoke increased. What do you think of this attempt? Is it indeed rational?

Some nonsmokers propose that smoking should be banned in all public places, because tobacco, especially secondhand smoke, is no good for our health. @Though I hate smoke and I know smoke sometimes causes cancer and asthma, I canft possibly assent to this proposal because about fifty percent of men and ten percent of women in Japan smoke. That is to say about thirty percent of the population is smoking. Most of them can release their stress by the grace of smoking and it is one of their pleasures, and furthermore, itfs one of their habits. Is there anything we should do before we contemplate how to forbid smoking?

In Japan, education of smoking harm has begun in elementary school since 18 and in junior high school since 184. This means people over thirty years old were never able to get a good education of tobacco. They were, rather, taught that smoking was cool, so smoking became one of their habits. It is easy for us to tell them that they should give up smoking but it is very difficult for them to do so though they know smoking is no good for their health. So the government should equip children with a good enough education of tobacco so as not to increase the number of smokers.

Certainly, recent smokersf manners are bad. For instance, some of them smoke without scruples while they are walking and therefore nonsmokers come to smoke unwillingly. Then they offer the plan like prohibition against smoking in all public places. However itfs too severe, so I suggest we make smoking rooms in all public places. Of course it is not open, but completely closed. Itfs better to put machines like air cleaners to separate smoke and clean air in the room.

Write my Essay on Let's Think about Coexistence of Smokers and Nonsmokers for me

Technology is improving day by day. Though these machines are expensive and not well known now, they will be cheaper in the future and it will be possible to put them in all public places. And it ought to be also possible that we invent cigarettes which do not emit harmful secondhand smoke. Affording to improve vending machines of tobacco, scientists should strive for creating something that is more useful to solve the problem of smoking harm.

Naturally, there are a variety of people in society and each of them has his or her own ideas. We have to have respect for each other to live together. We can say the case of tobacco problem is the same as it, canft we? Smokers and nonsmokers should understand each otherfs position and coexist. In fact, nonsmokers need smokersf cooperation for the sake of reducing the number of smokers. We often think only about our own position, so letfs take other positions into consideration. Then you can change tracks.
