Motivating employees by building and maintaining morale is critical to a productive workforce. Effective managers have and use the skills necessary to teach and encourage motivation by becoming the example, recognizing achievers, and communicating effectively (Weiss 1). Though many factors contribute to the building of morale, involvement and empowerment are key, and complimentary to each other. While I have not yet had the opportunity to test my own ability at these skills, I have had the occasion to experience varying levels of these skills from the inside looking out as well as the outside looking in.

Without motivation, employees can feel as if they are puppets or that they work because they have to and not because they want to. These employees who are not motivated and have low morale will build resentment and become lackluster performers. If motivated, these same employees can become top performers. If morale is built, they will take ownership, and when desirable behavior is rewarded, the extra effort will be given that will increase efficiency. Communication is essential for involving and empowering employees, and fundamental for outlining boundaries and the freedoms offered within them (Weiss 1).

I agree with W.H. Weiss in his January 001 article in Supervision, where he wrote that motivation is a crucial supervisory skill. A manger that sets the example and rewards like efforts can stimulate the same in those working for him or her. Although I haven't been afforded the opportunity to apply this myself, I have worked for those who have allowed freethinking and welcomed input from those who are actually doing the work. The empowering involvement this provides fosters enthusiasm and high morale, which, in turn generates increased productivity. Each employee feels personal ownership and pride, versus resentment, poor morale, and mediocre output.

Having had the opportunity to observe and experience both motivational and non-motivational management, it is clear to me that supervisors in any field can greatly benefit him or herself and the company by keeping morale high through the skills mentioned above. Employees feeling ownership and involvement will work harder and longer than those who do not. Managers who do not care to put the relatively small amount of time into motivating their employees and building the morale in their area of responsibility will reap fractions of the rewards and benefits of those who do. As relatively easy and rewarding as motivating and morale building is, these skills often go unpracticed. As W.H. Weiss stated in his article, "While motivation techniques are not difficult to master, they are often neglected."Cheap Custom Essays on Motivating Employees and Maintaining Morale

How does literature challenge and validate my values and beliefs?

Eddie Chu

Literature is written by many different people who all have their own distinctive set of beliefs and these people all have different experiences and backgrounds. By reading literature published by these unique people, I am thereby exposed to many people¡¦s point of view. However, I don¡¦t always agree with these people¡¦s opinion and beliefs at all time, they sometimes challenge my own value and ethics on particular issues as well as validating them for me. Literary pieces such as ¡§6 Degree of Separations¡¨, ¡§Three Passions¡¨, ¡§Shades of Grey¡¨ and ¡§Nine-Year Olds, Meet Monet¡¨ have truly showed me the power of literature because each one has interacted with my values by challenging and validating them. Each one of these pieces provided not only entertainment to one who reads it, but it also teach important lessons for anyone. Whether it is concerning with the issue of homosexuality, passions, depressions or educations, the different opinions of authors have allowed me to see things in another¡¦s shoes.

¡§6 Degree of Separation¡¨ is a piece of literature about homosexuality that has taken as the form of a video. This movie talks about the main character Paul, who is pretending to be someone he¡¦s not so he can be accepted in today¡¦s society. One of the factors why he wasn¡¦t accepted in the society is because of his sexual preference; hence he tries to pretend to be part of the hierarchy of society. The fact is that gays are often neglected and discriminated against in the society; he therefore strives in every way possible for society¡¦s approval, and sometimes even by means that are intolerable.

Order Custom The importance of Food paper

Homosexuality was something that I thought of as unreasonable, and this movie was one of my first exposures to the homosexual¡¦s point of view, and this movie had opened up a whole new way for me to see things. All of a sudden, I realized that even homosexuals have their own story since they too are real people and they too are victims in today¡¦s harsh civilization. I realized that sexuality preference should not affect a person and whether they are good or bad, and this was proved by my sympathy towards Paul growing as the movie progresses and more information was revealed. I actually felt sorry for him; I felt that his isolation and the hostility the society was giving him was the only cause of his action, therefore he doesn¡¦t mean to be bad. I was initially disgusted by Paul¡¦s action when I found out that he was lying, however after the movie discussed his point of the story, I suddenly felt sympathetic for him.

I can¡¦t say that ¡§6 Degree of Separation¡¨ had suddenly changed my mind completely, especially on the topics of sexuality, but I feel that acted as a very good stepping stone towards my acceptance of homosexuals, because it provided me with a lot of background and support where other people¡¦s opinion are also valid. This movie mainly showed me that even homosexuals have their stories. This proved to me that my previous prejudice was not suitable, hence challenging and shaping my beliefs.

At the same time when literature is powerful enough to challenge my beliefs, it also does a magnificent job of validating them. It¡¦s comforting to feel that I am not the only one who thinks a certain way in the world, and that there are others who share the same opinion as me. A piece of literature that proved this was ¡§Three Passions.¡¨ At the time I was reading it, I had a feeling that this particular piece was written just for me. The passions that the author has always sought for are the same ones that I¡¦ve been looking for through out my whole life. I have always been searching for love, knowledge and the true meaning of life.

The paragraph about love especially brought me joy as I read it. ¡§¡K Because it brings ecstasy ¡V ecstasy so great that I would often have scarified all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy.¡¨ (Russell) This is very true in my case since friends are currently one of the most precious things in my life; they bring me endless amounts of happiness and relieve my loneliness just like the author have stated in the piece.

¡§Shades of Grey¡¨ is also another piece of influential writing. When the author says ¡§Shades of grey wherever I go, the more I find out the less that I know. Black and white is how it should be, but shades of grey is all that I see,¡¨ This was something I was feeling through out my whole life. Why are there so many uncertainties and so much depressing events that keep occurring? And no matter wherever I go, I see things that are uncertain; shouldn¡¦t it be easier to justify between what¡¦s right and what¡¦s wrong, instead of seeing everything in the middle, facing bias and unfairness.

I found this poem rather comforting because of the fact that I feel a strong relation between the poem and myself. The author was generally experiencing the same thing that I often experience, confusion in my own identities, conflict with peers and family, or miscommunication between different people as well as the difficulties of distinguishing the differences between what¡¦s right and what¡¦s wrong. It¡¦s because of the relation between the poem and me that made this poem extra meaningful to me. Since I agree with the content of the poem, this proves to me that someone else also feels the same way as me, therefore also validating my beliefs.

LOVE

Love is a beautiful thing. Love is a powerful thing. Love is what makes people happy, what makes people smile. It is very hard to understand the power of love. Love is a strong feeling of caring about someone. The word love goes back to the very roots of many languages. Many English words come from Latin. Also the world love is from Latin lubet pleasing and lubido desire. The word love can be find from the English writings in the 8th century. According to Aristophanes" the sexes were not two as they are now, but originally three in number; there was man, woman, and the union of the two, because the sun, moon, and earth are three;-and the man was originally the child of the sun, the woman of the earth, and the man-woman of the moon, which is made up of sun and earth, and they were all round and moved round and round." Love starts between man and women, they create love to a child, but separation of two lovers can be very painful lost of something very special.

When two people fall in love, they feel incredibly romantic feelings. These romantic and strong feelings are combined with a sexual attraction. When I and my boyfriend felt in love, I became the happiest in my life. We have that kind of spark, if he walks into a room, my eyes light up, and his do the same. Between me and him is love. We feel very emotionally, we feel passion, we feel desire. I miss him whenever I am not with him. I think of him twenty four hours a day. Over the last two years, my love to him got only stronger, and I feel special connection between our hearts. Now, he is my husband, and I have never felt anything similar before. I believe, we have true. Only true love remains forever.

When two people have a child, they feel also very strong feelings. These strong feelings are combined with a support and responsibility. It is a special gift for mother to give a birth to her baby. It is amazing and beautiful feelings. Mother shares these feelings with father. They have very strong love for the baby, and they would do anything for him or her. The child needs love. The child needs to feel saved, supported and to be loved.

Love is not be jealous or boastful. Love is not somebody's property. Love also can be very confusing. It does not express only happiness and pleasure. It expresses pain and anger. Not always people stay together and they go separate way in theirs life. The lost of love crossed many people's life, and it is very painful. People should not give up on love. They should try to keep it.

Love is a four-letter word, what makes life beautiful. It gives a motivation to many talented people to express themselves . Poems are written, songs are sung, buildings are built. All of these are results of love. So we should love, and we should be loved.

What is the role and importance of the character Joe Gargery in the novel 'Great Expectations'?

In this essay I am going to be assessing the role and importance of the character Joe Gargery. I am going to be doing this by looking at the way he behaves and the way he communicates with the other characters in the story. I am also going to be looking at what other characters say about Joe's behaviour and what his personality is like.

The actual story of Great Expectations is about the life of the fictional character Pip. The start of the book is about his childhood in a small village in the countryside, and introduces the main characters that will appear throughout the book. The middle section of the book is about Pip living in London after he starts receiving A TITLE=Click for more information about A TITLE=Click for more information about money STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A from a mysterious benefactor. The middle part of the book is also the most important section because this is the part where Pip changes most, and so it allows Joe to fulfil his main function in the book, which is to be a comparison to measure how Pip changes during the course of the novel. The final section of the book is about Pip discovering the identity of his benefactor and how he changes after learning who it is. In the final section, Dickens also uses his authorial intent to get across the notion that you get what you give. This can be seen because Joe, who is good tempered and kind to other people, gets married and has A TITLE=Click for more information about A TITLE=Click for more information about children STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=4children/A STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=4children/A, but Pip who had been corrupted and influenced by the A TITLE=Click for more information about A TITLE=Click for more information about money STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A he received ends up on his own with no money.

When Dickens wrote Great Expectations, between December 1860 and June 1861 he used the book to get across his views on the society of the time and how bad the lives of poor people were at the time. Dickens does not however use the book to criticise or blame rich people for the problems. A possible reason for this is that the main readers of Dickens A TITLE=Click for more information about A TITLE=Click for more information about books STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=5books/A STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=5books/A were rich people because not many poor people could read. Dickens also uses the book to get across his views on the laws of the time and how they were too strict. He does this by personification of the law in the form of the lawyer Jaggers, who is strong minded and quite a negative person in the book. Dickens doesnt criticise the law very much though because Jaggers also comes across as a fair person.

In the novel, Joe is not portrayed to be very intelligent; this is because at the time he represented the standard working class male in Britain. Although Dickens might have wanted to make him cleverer to order to please the working class population at the time, he had to make Joe less intelligent to make him more realistic and more importantly help the readers understand why Joe is as forgiving and kind as he is to Pip later on in the book.

Even though Dickens makes Joe appear to be not very clever in order to make him more realistic, other factors make him seem more like a caricature than a character. Most noticeably of these is the fact that throughout the novel nobody says anything negative about him. More importantly, he does not say anything or do anything that would show him as a bad person, for example he forgives Pip for everything nasty he says about them. In addition, he forgives the convict when he says that he broke into their house and stole some food.

God knows youre welcome to it - so far as it was ever mine,

returned Joe, with a saving remembrance of Mrs. Joe. We dont know

what you have done, but we wouldnt have you starved to death for

it, poor miserable fellow-creature"

This is good proof of the compassionate side of Joe, shows the reader early in the novel that he is a good man, and doesn't judge people that he has just met.

Another way Joe is seen to be a caricature is the way in which he treats Mrs Joe, and that he just lets her push him around. We discover later in the novel that he does this because his father used to hit his mother and so Joe tries his hardest not to be like his father.

"My father, Pip, he were given to drink, and when he were overtook with drink, he hammered away at my mother, most onmerciful. It were amost the only hammering he did, indeed, xcepting at myself. And he hammered at me with a wigour only to be equalled by the wigour with which he didnt hammer at his anwil."

Although Joe gives a reason for being so kind to Mrs Joe, he seems quite strange because he is so kind and doesn't even shout at Mrs Joe when she is pushing him around. This gives a very strong illusion that he is a caricature and not a character.

Because Joe is portrayed as being quite dim Dickens compensates for this by showing him as a very hard working and skilful blacksmith. Not only does this make him more realistic, because most people did work very hard when the book was written, Joe being a blacksmith fits in very well with the story. This is because the convict would need a way to get his manacles off, and Joe being a blacksmith, he would have a file in his workshop.

This is also good because being a blacksmith he doesn't have to have a good education so he seems foolish to the people around him. Because of this, he is openly criticised and ignored by Mrs Joe and Pumplechook when they are having dinner with the Wopsles. However, when he goes to see Miss Havisham with Pip, Miss Havisham seems to understand Joe more than Mrs Joe and Pumplechook ever had.

"Miss Havisham glanced at him as if she understood what he really was, better than I had thought possible"

Joe going to see Miss Havisham is an excellent example of how Joe becomes uncomfortable and self-conscious when he is in unfamiliar surroundings.

"I could hardly have imagined dear old Joe looking so unlike himself

or so like some extraordinary bird; standing, as he did…It was very aggravating; but, throughout the interview Joe persisted in addressing me instead of Miss Havisham."

Because Joe behaves uncomfortably when he is around people that are of a higher social status than he is, it also explains why he doesn't contribute to any discussions when Pumblechook and the Wopsles are round for dinner.

"In these discussions, Joe bore no part. But he was often talked at, while they were in progress"

Although Joe is quite a humorous character in the story, his main purpose is to act as a comparison to Pip. This is because during the story Pip's views and reactions to the world change between every chapter, and so it is very difficult for the reader to judge what sort of personality he has during the course of the novel. Joe on the other hand has the same personality throughout the novel and so he provides the reader with a means of judging the way Pip behaves.

This is most noticeable in chapter 7 when Joe goes to see Pip in London after he has come into his fortune. It is very easy to see the way in which Joe acts towards Pip now that he has more A TITLE=Click for more information about A TITLE=Click for more information about money STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A and lives in an expensive house.

Thankee, Sir, said Joe

This shows that Pip has come into fortune because Joe refers to him as 'sir', which he would only do if Pip were of a higher social status. This is because they both have a long friendship together and Joe wouldn't call him sir if he had only received a small amount of A TITLE=Click for more information about A TITLE=Click for more information about money STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//odysseusmarketing.com/walt/go.php?nid=54money/A. From this, you can also see how Pip feels when Joe calls him sir

Joe, I interrupted, pettishly, how can you call me, Sir?

This shows that Pip is troubled that Joe has disregarded there friendship and calls him sir even though they used to be of equal stature.

Although his personality stays the same Joe does change slightly during the novel with the fact that he learns to read. Dickens uses this for his own purposes though because first Pip tries to teach Joe to read and write but does this to no avail because Joe doesn't want to learn from someone as young as Pip. However, when Biddy comes to stay Joe learns quite quickly. This is because Biddy is closer to Joe's age than Pip and so Joe feels less intimidated by her.

Remember your high school days? The pep rallies, the big football game, and how the football players were treated like royalty? In Children of the River, Linda Crew describes the world of Willamette Grove, where Jonathan McKinnon is your typical white, suburban, All-American boy. He is the big football star who everyone likes. Jonathan is described as your All-American boy, and for good reasons. He appears the part, he is very popular, and comes from the typical rich suburban background. As the story progresses that becomes more apparent.

First of all, Jonathan Mckinnon appears the part of the All-American boy. He dresses in jeans and t-shirts just like most of the people at Willamette Grove High School. As Sundara, his love interest put it, put it " Would the son of a well to-do-doctor dress in faded jeans, sweatshirts with ragged cut sleeves? In America, yes,"(41). Jonathan also wears a football jacket, as do the rest of the team. Now this goes back to him being a football player. Jonathan also appears the part by acting how de does. He walks down the hall with his cheerleader girlfriend, Cathy Gates, he hangs out with the football team, and he drives around in his convertible sports car. The fact that Jonathan dresses the part of the All-American boy, acts the part of the All-American boy, and just appears the part of the All-American boy makes Jonathan another in a long line of All-American boys. This however is only one of the reasons that Jonathan is the All-American boy.

The next reason Jonathan is an All-American boy, is the fact that he is popular. First of all he is the big football star at Willamette Grove High, which takes credit for most of his popularity. Secondly, Jonathan is dating the popular cheerleader. It is like something out of a movie. Cathy Gates is the cute little cheerleader and she and Jonathan are a perfect couple. According to Kelly, Sundara's friend, " 'She and Jonathan McKinnon have been going together forever', "(46). Also, people admire him. He is congratulated in the school halls after they win a football game, and even Ravy, Sundara's cousin, is impressed when Jonathan shows up at their house to see Sundara. "Ravy stared up at Jonathan. 'You really Jonathan McKinnon, the football player?',"(111) As you can see, all these reasons show that Jonathan is indeed popular which is a vital part of the All-American boy. This is the second reason Jonathan McKinnon is the All-American boy; there is one more reason.

Lastly, Jonathan's background is that of the All-American boy. First, he lives in a big suburban house. This is proved when Sundara goes to his house for a sailing trip she is "marveled as she parked the station wagon in front of Jonathan's huge white house. So big for only three people!"(), obviously an expensive house. This also illustrates that his family is wealthy. However, this is not a shock once considering that Jonathan's father is a doctor. This is uncovered when Sundara and Jonathan are talking, " 'Is your father a doctor?' 'Yeah, a pediatrician.',"(41). Sundara recognized the name McKinnon because when her family first came to America, Dr. McKinnon helped her cousin Pon when he was sick. Also, Jonathan's mother is the model suburban mother who is in the League of Women Voters and involved in school committees. This shows typical suburban parents where the father has a job in which he makes a lot of money (lawyer, doctor, accountant etc.) and the mother does not have to work. To emphasize the point even more, Jonathan and his family own a boat and regularly sail, and also ski, two activities that take money in which to participate in. The fact that Jonathan's family is wealthy, that his parents are typical suburban parents, a father who is a doctor, and a non-working mother. His family also takes part in activities that take money. This all proves that Jonathan's family is the typical suburban family.Write my Essay on Jonathan McKinnon in Children of the River is your typical All-American boy cheap

It is true that Jonathan is trying to shake that All-American boy image. He is befriending and actually is romantically interested in the girl who is different, the outsider, Sundara. Jonathan actually quits the football team, which sends his popularity in a downward spiral. It also seems that he cares a little less about what people think of him at the end of the novel than at the beginning. As his appearance is not quite what it started out as. However he can not be drifting very far from the All-American boy image if he still participates in or still has all of the stereotypical components of the All-American boy, which he indeed does. Though he cannot control all the elements that make him the All-American boy, he certainly does not try to prevent them. In conclusion, throughout the novel it is proven time and time again that Jonathan McKinnon is indeed your typical white, suburban, All-American boy. This is proven by the fact that he appears the part, is popular, and comes from the typical suburban family. Indeed Jonathan McKinnon is that All-American boy portrayed in movies, and I have a feeling he is going to stay that way.

Please note that this sample paper on Jonathan McKinnon in Children of the River is your typical All-American boy is for your review only. Anger. It consumes us all at one point or another. Sometimes anger is the one thing that keeps us pressing on. In this novel, they say "…the fear went from their faces, and anger took its place. And the women sighed in relief, for they know that it was alrightthe break had not come; and the break would never come as long as fear could turn to anger." Anger is what kept the family pressing on during all of their hardships. And without being angry at death itself they would have all died.

There are many situations of anger in this book anger at the cops, anger at each other, anger at the land owners and bankers; but none of these compared to the anger that they had against themselves. They were angry at themselves for not being able to do something about the situation that they were in. All of them dealt with it in a different manner, but Tom was the main one that dealt with the situation with the most anger. He was angry from the start to the finish of the book. If you can call it a finish. I think that his anger will continue to burn when he goes to goes to pick up where Casey left off.

Tom lets his anger guide him in the situation at Hooverville when the cop shot the ladies hand off. Instead of thinking that he could go back to jail, he acted on instinct and tripped and hit the cop. He also let his anger guide him when he killed the man that killed Casey. There was a weird balance of compassion and anger in this scene. His compassion for Casey turned into anger against the other men. He acts purely on what he is feeling at the moment. Maybe later he will regret killing the guy, but earlier in the novel he said "I've killed once and I wouldn't hesitate to kill again." So maybe he just sees it as a necessity. "The guy just killed my friend and is about to kill me so I better start fighting," Tom thinks to himself in the book. Tom uses his anger as a tool. Whenever he feels threatened or feels that his family is threatened, he turns on his anger and gets ready to fight.

Tom has a thing that whenever someone is being picked on or discriminated against, he gets angry at the persecutor. I don't think that he means to get as angry as he does; it just kind of takes control of him. The anger that he has lives in him and it eats away at him. But that is his defense; he uses anger to control situations in his favor. And it works quite well for him. I don't think that what Tom does would work for everyone. Most people could not do things the way that he does.Buy anger term paper

Everyone gets angry; some more frequent than others. But it is all in how we use our anger that counts. Tom rarely got angry at his family. He got angry in defending his family, but never at them. He saved all of his strength for the fight to survive. And that is what we must do in our lives save our strength, fight for the good cause, and never give up. But above all, whatever problems come your way, get angry at them and do not fear for the sun will always rise again tomorrow.

The holocaust

The Holocaust was a catastrophic, cataclysmic event in history that took place

over 55 years ago, but why is it still so important to us today? One of the many

reasons it is still widely discussed today, is because of the many rights it Write your The Holocaust research paper

violated for the Jews as human beings. The main goal of the holocaust was for

Nazis to try and kill every Jewish person alive in Europe. Many Nazi leaders

tried their hardest do to this, and went unpunished for their actions. All of

this tradgedy and calamity started when Adolf Hitler came into power.

Adolf Hitler and his Third Reich came to power in 18, the Jews in Europe

knew they were in trouble. Hitler blamed them for Germanys rapid fall as a

world power and he made sure they were to be punished for their supposedly wrong

doings. Elie Wiesels novel Night, is about his own

familys struggle to survive the terrifying years of the early

140s. Wiesel exists in a minority of Jews who lived to share his

unfortunate and disturbing experiences. Elie, his three siblings, and

parents

were from Sighet, Transylvania. Most of the townspeople believed that living

in Sighet put them far out of Hitlers reach, but they eventually were forced

to face the harsh reality near the end of the war. This came as a surprise to

them because the Jews had been following the path of the war

closely by listening to the radio. The Jews of Sighet began to question

themselves and ask is it possible for one man and his Fascist party to wipe

out

an entire race of people. Although Elie

17;s family was financially stable, their ownership of the family store made

them more visible to the Nazis, and therefore put them in great danger.

Elie pleaded with his father to sell the family business and liquidate it so

they could move far off to a place where Hitler could not get to them. He

feared that the Fascist party was coming to wipe out the town of Sighet and

that his family would lose everything that they dreamed of and worked for.

His

father insisted that

they not sell the business because he felt there was no reason to fear the

Nazis because they would not come as far as Sighet. He figured by that time

the

war will be over and Hitler will lose his power of Germany. In addition, his

father argued that they were too old to start over in a new place and that

they

would be suffer financially. Elies father decided to take his chances.

While reading, I felt that at this point the Jews should have taken the

situation much more seriously then they were because now German army cars were

approaching there town.

The town was in shock, no one thought it would go this far and it did. The

soldiers pulled up in there steel helmets and the emblems that signified death

head, but it was unexpected that the soldiers would actually be kind. Some

stayed in Jewish homes and were even polite. One soldier brought chocolates

to

Madame Kahn, a captured Jew. The Kahn family even said they were

likeable and everyone felt rejoiced and at ease (Wiesel 8). As a result

of many of the soldiers kindness, the townspeople were still not

prepared for the ultimate attack. What they did not know was that the Nazis

were only waiting for reinforcements to help secure the town before beginning

extermination. It was the week of Passover and all the synagogues were closed

by the Nazis. Instead, the Jews gathered for prayer at the Rabbis house.

His house later became known as the house of prayer for the people of the

town. Passover is supposed to be a time of prayer, food, drink, and singing

for seven days of happiness, but how much happiness could come from this event

knowing that the Nazis were preparing them for deportation to concentration

camps where they would be enslaved with work and little food. The townspeople

stayed strong and for the most part stayed upbeat about the situation keeping

there tradition alive through prayers, eating good food, and singing songs to

ease the tensions. The Nazis continued their attack by arresting the Jewish

leaders of the community and controlling the town. Life for the people of

Sighet quickly changed. Jews could not leave their homes for days or they

would be killed. Gold, jewels, objects of any real value had to be handed over

to the soldiers, but Elies father was smart and buried the family

valuables in the seller. After three days, every Jew was issued a yellow star

that had to be worn at all times in order to preserve their lives.

Restraunts,

cafes, and synagogues were taken away from the people and they were not

allowed

out in the street past six oclock. The town of Sighet was to be split

into two ghettos, a large one right in the middle of town that took up four

streets, and the other one would be spread out all over the town in small side

streets of the district. Elies family lived on Serphant Street, which

was in the large ghetto in the middle of the town. Some of the rooms in his

house had to be given up for relatives who have lost everything they owned.

The townspeople came together to form a little Jewish Republic because all

they

had was each other to help make it through these tough times. They appointed

the Jewish police, office for social assistance, labor committee, a hygiene

department and a government of machinery. T

alk of deportation began to spread throughout the town. The Jewish Republic

would not be able to prevent the deportation. The people would only be able

to

bring what they could carry and everything else has to be left behind.

Everyone was asked to leave their houses and form a line outside to receive

there deportation times Many of the Jews knew that if they made it to the

concentration camp and they could be sent straight to the crematory. In

readying themselves Elies parents said, We must fast as much as

we can before we are deported because we do not know when they will be feeding

us next (Wiesel 16). The synagogues were used as huge stations for

checking baggage to be sure that people were not jewel smuggling. From there

they were sent off to be put in wagons that tightly fit eight people, one

window with bars so no one could escape a few loaves of bread and two buckets

of water. In the wagon they were not allowed to lie down; they were only able

to sit if they others decided to stand and take turns. The time came for

Elies family to be deported.Ellies family, like the other Jewish

families, went through the station were put into their wagons. Elies

family was split up at this point. His mother was put in one wagon with his

little sisters and Elie and his father were put into another one. After two

days of being tortured by thirst in the wagon, the heat became unbearable.

Food was never enough to satisfy their hunger. One Jewish woman, Madame

Shacter became delirious after her and her husband was separated at the

station. The whole ride she moaned and weeped. At night she would scream

that

there was a fire, but sure enough, they were always false alarms. When the

wagon finally stopped at the camp, the woman yelled fire again, but this time

she was right. She saw the chimney to where the Nazis burned the Jews.

They had reached Auschivitz concentration camp where the families would be

separated and meet the Angel of Death. The Angel of Death was the most

feared and powerful man besides Hitler for the Nazis (Wiesel ). Their

fate was in the hands of one man, and in just a few short seconds one could

either be dead or tortured for the next few years. All the Jews were ordered

out of the wagons and immediately Elie and his father began to look for his

mother and wife. When they found them, it was too late-- his mother and

sisters

were on there way to the crematory to be killed. As Elie and his father

waited

in line to learn their destination from the Angel of Death, others were giving

him and his father advice on how to stay alive. They told them to lie about

their age because anyone over 40 or under 18 would be murdered. His father

was

over 40 and Elie was under 18. Without that helpful information they both

would have been sent straight to the crematory. As Elie and his father

entered

the camp, they were issued prison- like clothing and all the hair on there

body

was shaved off. Next, they were all sent to work. Reflecting on the

situation

Elie said, If I was sent to the crematory I would have run straight for

the fence and jumped on it (Wiesel ). The fences were electrical and

anyone who touched it would be shocked to death. He felt that if he was going

to die it would not be at the hands of the Nazis. He would be able to rest in

peace if he killed himself rather then having some Nazi kill him. Every day,

they had to face the guards of the camp, who were mostly so cruel to the Jews,

but some of the Nazis were nice and tried to befriend the Jews, but

those who were lenient towards the Jews were executed by being hung. The Jews

were given very little food and very little time to rest. Each week they had

one day off and that would be on Sunday, on that day they could do almost

whatever they wanted. They were even treated a little better by receiving an

extra portion of food or bread that is all the Jews were served. Because of

these conditions the older Jews began to die because their bodies we not able

to fight the hunger and the harsh winters they faced with the little clothing

they were issued. Elie was young and was able to withstand rougher conditions

then most of the others in the concentration camps. He also had a little

something else; he would not give in to hunger and the bitter coldness because

he would not leave his father there by himself. They both used each other as

motivation to keep themselves living. Elie looked in his fathers eyes

and knew the harsh conditions were taking its toll on his father. Near the

end

of the war with Russian soldiers coming to the rescue the Nazis began

deporting Elies concentration camp once again. Just like in the

beginning if one was not up to par with their health and physical ability that

person would be sent to the crematory. Elie knew his father might not pass,

he

thought he might not even pass because of his foot condition. Elie had to get

surgery on his foot because it became badly swollen from a puss buildup and

faced amputation but the doctors at the camp caught the problem in time and

corrected it with the surgery. With the Russians attack on the

concentration camp the Jews were issued as much clothing as they would need to

face the bitterness of the cold to march to the next concentration camp to

steer clear of the Russians. As Jews were forced to flee the camp people were

being trampled on and killed because the officers were forcing them to run

faster and if anyone was to stop they would be shot on the spot. With

Elies foot conditions he was unsure if he was able to make the journey,

he was just recovering from surgery and with no shoe on he reopened his wound.

Blood flowed into the white snow as he ran alongside his father who urged him

to keep running. The pain soon left his mind because he could not concentrate

on that anymore; all he cared about was making it to the next camp alongside

his father. On the way many of his friends and colleagues were shot because

they were not able to keep up with the rest of the group. They stopped

running

and the officers without thinking shot one after another. Everyone felt the

pain and the sorrow of their friends being shot but they knew they had to move

on or they would be next. The gate to the new concentration camp was near,

they made the march. It was more of a triumph for the Jews because now they

could rest and get the attention they needed if they were wounded. They were

glad just to be alive and to make it through everyone being trampled on.

Elies father became very ill and was not able to make another march to

another concentration camp if they had to leave again. As he begged his son

for water a soldier told him to keep quiet but he paid no mind to the soldier.

The soldier cracked him over the head with his gun and his father lay there

still. He was still breathing but close to death. I awoke on January

, 145 at dawn. In my fathers place lay another invalid. They must

have taken him away before dawn and carried him to the crematory. He may

still have been breathing (Wiesel 106). Elie d

id not weep because there were no more tears left for him to cry. It

pained me that I could not weep. But I had no more tears (Wiesel 106).

For the next couple of months Elie was to await his freedom, keep hope alive

that he was going to make it out of this concentration camp. Word hit that

the

Russians were on attack again and the Nazis were preparing another move to a

new concentration camp. This time they moved to late and the attack began and

after a few hours the attack was over. At the foot of the gate they saw the

first American tank. The first act of as free men was to throw

ourselves onto the provisions. We thought only of that. Not of revenge, not of

our families. Nothing but bread (Wiesel 10). Shortly after the rescue

Elie became ill with food poisoning and was transferred to the hospital and

spent a few weeks between life and death. Elie had made it to freedom and

only

wished his family could have been there to share the joy of being free

again. Many Jews died for no reason during this era of madness over in Germany

during the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. Millions upon millions lost their

lives and were separated from their families. Elie and his family were

separated at the station back in Sighet. Elie and his father had to watch his

mother and sisters go off to the crematory, many families had to watch their

family members go straight to death or even watch them die as they are being

beat to death because there work is not up to par. Elie now only has a life

of

loneliness without his family to look forward to and the horrible memories of

seeing people be killed or how his friends suffered to their death. That is a

great deal of trauma for one child to witness at such a young age. The

numbers

they were issued and tattooed on there forearms will always remind them of

those terrible

days at the concentration camps. Those memories alone are enough to drive one

to be crazy and not want to live on. Elie went on to be an accomplished

writer

and

professor at Boston University and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 186. Elie is

a

success story who made it through those tough years and became one of the most

influential writers of the Holocaust. This was his story and how he survived

and became a hero.

Literary Analysis The Chrysanthemums

In The Chrysanthemums, Steinbeck accurately portrays what it was like to be a female in the 10s. He shows how isolated someone, especially women, could be. Many things in the story are obvious to the reader, however many events have underlying symbolism and depth. These events have to be read into and understood by the reader in order to get the full effect of Steinbeck's symbolism and parallelism between Elisa and the 10s.

Elisa is a middle-aged married woman, who lives on her husband's, Henry, ranch. She is a very simple woman who takes great pleasure in caring for her flowers. Henry is often away at work and Elisa is left alone, which is why her flowers mean so much to her.

Custom Essays on Literray Analysis of John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums

Throughout several parts of the story, Steinbeck shows us the emotional and social effects on Elisa and her life. The first instance of symbolism is how Elisa tends to her garden. She nurtures her flowers and babies them, by doing this it shows that she is needed. If she did not care for her flowers in the way she does, they would not grow. This makes her feel important because her flowers are beautiful and grow to be strong. Elisa cares for them just like they were her own children. She is able to watch them change and grow and this is one thing she has control over (448).

A hobby that women often took part in and enjoyed during this time was gardening. Since women of this time period were thought of as being the passive sex and did not have a large role in society, Elisa tried to hide her feminism. She tries to hide these traits by wearing masculine looking clothing while she is in the garden. "Her figure looked blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a man's black hat pulled low over her eyes, clodhopper shoes, a figured print dress almost completely covered by a big corduroy apron with four big pockets to hold the snips, the towel and scratcher, the seeds and the knife she worked with. She wore heavy leather gloves to protect her hands while she worked" (448). In this scene, Steinbeck describes how Elisa tries to disguises the woman in her, by covering up her womanly body with a manly get-up and her soft hands by wearing gloves in the garden.

While Elisa was working in the garden, she saw a man go by. On the side of his wagon it read "Pots, Pans, Knives, Sisors, Lown mores. Fixed." As the wagon turned down the drive, Elisa was very apprehensive about talking to the man. He asked if she had anything he could fix and she declined. He noticed her flowers and began to comment on them. She thought he sounded interested in her chrysanthemums and she let her guard down. As they were talking the man brought up the topic of a lady down the way that had wanted chrysanthemums in her garden. Elisa decided to give him a pot with the stalks in it and he would deliver it to her. She went into great detail as to how to care for them. "Everything goes right down into your fingertips. You watch your fingers work. They do it themselves. You can feel how it is." She also prides herself on the fact that she has "gardners' hands" which was something her mother had. She decides to find some pots for him to fix so he could eat that night. He fixes her pots and then heads off down the road to deliver the flowers. After the man left, Elisa realized the man had conned her into thinking he really cared by talking about her flowers. She was disappointed for not sticking to her word and letting herself become so open to a stranger.

Elisa then goes inside to get ready for dinner in town. As she showers, she "scrubbed herself with a little stone of pumice, legs and thighs, loins and chest and arms, until her skin was scratched and red" (45). This description illustrates how Elisa was trying to wash away her feminine flaws of opening up and giving in. When her husband arrives, he comments on how beautiful she looks, only this was not what she wanted to hear. She had just scrubbed away her womanly beauty and she did not want to be thought of as beautiful (45).

On their way to dinner, Elisa notices a speck ahead on the side of the road. As they passed she realized it was her chrysanthemums that the man had thrown off the wagon. She then knew that the man did not care for her offering or the effort she put into it, but only the money he received (45).

At the end of the story, Elisa breaks down and begins to cry. "She turned up her collar so he could not see that she was crying weakly-like an old woman" (454). This leads us to believe that Elisa is afraid to show emotion to her husband because this might make him think less of her and she wants to be treated equal. By showing this emotion, it makes her feel like she will never escape the title that society has put on her, merely for being a woman.

By leading us through the events in Elisa's life, it gives the reader a chance to see what it was like to be a woman in this time and how many differences there were between men and women. Even though Elisa enjoys some womanly things, she also wants to be able to have the same opportunities as a man. Steinbeck shows us that Elisa no longer wants to be so emotional and passive, therefore stereotyping her as a weak woman. She wanted to be accepted for how she was. During The Chrysanthemums, Steinbeck explored how different events had emotional effects on Elisa, and how this affected the way she reacted socially.

MARCEL DUCHAMP

Marcel Duchamp was born on the 8th of July 1887, in France. He was first recognized as an artist in 11 when he submitted a panting titles "Nude Descending a Staircase, No. " in New York. Duchamp was known for being a painter but also he was known for being a poet, experimenter in films and a chess player. In 111, when he was influenced by cubism, he painted the picture " The Chess Players" and started his first studies of "Nude Descending a Staircase No ". Also he created "The Coffee Mill". In this piece there was many problems of Dadaism and surrealism.

In 11 he finished on of his main, and most known for works "Nude Descending a Staircase NO ". The first showing of this piece created a fuss. Newspapers discovered that there was no trace of a nude or even a real figure in it. Which then came to symbolize some sort of movement of modern art towards humor and absurdity.

In 117 Duchamp invented the "ready-made". (A found object, which he declared, was an artwork) This extraordinary event was very influential of art in the 0th centaury. It opened the way for other artist for whom the object was a source and significant element in their works.Write my Essay on marcel duchamp for me

One of his ready-made objects, "Bicycle Wheel", 11, (diameter 64.8cm and mounted on a stool which is 60.cm high) became a real talking point. The main problem with Duchamp's ready-made was that people didn't classify it as art. They would say all it is, is an ordinary every day object put in a gallery. Also a point they would put forward that he didn't create it, all he did was present it. This led to a discussion of what art is really? Something you as a artist create with your own hands or some idea you think up and present it to someone else to make it. With "Bicycle Wheel", 11 Duchamp said he "simply liked spinning it occasionally, with his hand and watching it". It gives him the same enjoyment as when you look into a fire and watch the flames dancing around.

His work "Nude Descending a Staircase No. ", 11, (oil on canvas 147.5 x 8 cm) was one of his famous works. He used cubist techniques to try and show movement on canvas. He doubled, overlaid images to produce the look of movement. When it was showed it aroused sharp criticism, even among cubists. In 11 it was presented in New York at the Armory show. The Americans where fascinated by it and made him a popular artist overnight. While most viewers were outraged by this piece, others were delighted by the European break with academic and traditional art.

Marcel Duchamp became one of the most influential artists of the 0th century. His experiments in the fields of optical illusion, moving constructions and ready-mades paved the road for new artistic form such as op art, kinetic art and installations. He became an idol for the new generations of artists to come.

Abuse of power, and hypocracy in animal farm

Animal farm is a book mainly about abuse of power, and hypocracy.

It shows how the animals are manipulated to believe anything they are told. And do anything they are told.

Abuse of power is when someone takes charge and uses there power when they shouldn't. for example when the animals were over looking the commandments they thought the fifth commandment had said "no animal shall drink alcohol" (11). This shows how the animals learned one thing in the beginning of the revolution. In addition the animals noticed something different about the fifth commandment it read. "no animal shall drink alcohol to excess" (11). This shows that the pigs decided they wanted to drink alcohol so they changed the commandment to fit wants. They are not using there power as they should be.Order Custom Essay on animal farm

Hypocracy is when someone says one thing and does the complete opposite. For example after the attack the animals had though the sixth commandment read, "no animal shall kill any other animal"(8). This shows what the pigs told the animals. In addition they realized after all the deaths of the animals the commandment actually read "no animal shall kill any other animal without reason"(8). This shows what the animals did, even after saying they couldn't. they are controlling the other animals.

In conclusion the book animal farm was mainly about the abuse of power, and hypocracy. The animals were controlled and they didn't even know. and in the end all the animals were very very very very very very happy. so were all the people from all the farms. they all trusted the animals now and the animals were happy and the peopleliked them and thats all that happened in the book animal farm. and i think thats the end.

Who is a hero? What is a hero? These questions can have many different answers. Many different people look at hero in different ways and different perspectives. Each person might have their own unique definition of a hero. To me, no definition is the wrong one of a hero. A hero can be a person that someone knows or someone that they have never met before, but someone they would like to meet, then it also can be someone that is not real at all. I am going to give you my definition of a hero and what it means to me first and then a dictionary definition of a hero. Hero is someone that a person looks up to and most of the time always there to depend on. It is someone that can affect another person in a good way. A hero can do so much as to change a person's life and how they see things. There is so much different ways to explain a hero, but I think these factors are the main description of a hero. The dictionary definition of a hero is a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability b an illustrious warrior c a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities d one that shows great courage a the principal male character in a literary or dramatic work b the central figure in an event, period, or movement. You can see there is a difference between my definition of a hero and what the dictionary states is a hero. The dictionary concentrates on more powerful and more recognized figures, rather then just a simple person that changes another person's life. I think many people do think of a hero as a person of high power. I do not agree with that, I think a person can be any one in particular person that affects another person in a good way.

In this book a "Lesson Before Dying" written by Ernest Gaines talks about how a black community deals with the every day pressures of racism of the white community. This book is telling a story about a black young male (Jefferson) that is accused of murdering a white male store keeper, Jefferson was the only one alive after the shooting in the store. Jefferson was then put on trail where the all white jury found him guilty of murder. While this trail was going on there was something said that made this story become a book. Jefferson's own lawyer had called him a "hog" (7). In this trail his own defense degraded Jefferson in front of the jury, saying "this face as flat as the palm of my hand" and "I would call it a boy and a fool" (7). Then after the trail Jefferson was put in jail. His godmother (Miss Emma) was determined to make her boy a man before he died in the electric chair. So she talked to the teacher of the plantation, Mr. Grant Wiggins. She wanted him to teach him how to be a man. Miss Emma and Grant's aunt both told him he had to do this. So during this process they had to get permission from the sheriff to see Jefferson and they had to go though a lot of humiliation to see Jefferson. Grant had to wait in the house to see the sheriff for two and a half hours waiting for them to decide whether Grant could see Jefferson. For Grant that was a lot of humiliation to his own race. Well Grant started visiting Jefferson and tried to communicate with him. He called himself, "I'm a old hog" (8), disgracing his race. Then it just goes on to tell about the many visits Grant has with Jefferson. I think the silence between the two are a important part in the visits, they seem to communicate though silence and I consider Jefferson as teaching Grant some lessons about his life and how he should look at things differently. Finally at the end of the book, Jefferson finally gets a date for his execution. Grant could not be there, he was not strong enough and it tells at the end how a guy that worked in the jail (Paul) said "tell them he was the bravest man in that room." (56) But during all these visits and time between Grant saw one person that he loved so much and that was Vivian. She I think is the real hero in this whole book, even though she is not talked about so much as the other characters in this book.

I really consider Vivian to be the real hero in this book. She puts her faith and encourages Grant to visit Jefferson. She keeps Grant faith in Jefferson. She encourages him to do this for Jefferson and himself. Grant was not a religious man, he did not believe in God. Also, he had no faith in his teaching and he knew that he could never change or affect anyone's life. "I could never stay long angry long over anything. But I could never believe in anything, either, for very long" (15). It would always be the same, nothing would change. Blacks would go on being humiliated and not be as good as the white community. Vivian is one of the people that I think changed the way Grant looked at things after he went to see Jefferson and he was finally put to death. All Grant's life, he was taught that anything he did would not do any good. I think Vivian gave him the strength to go on and continue to see Jefferson and continue to teach in the plantation. Grant wanted so bad to leave that place, but for some reason he could not. The main reason to me why he could not leave was because of Vivian, she was still married and had kids and until the divorce went though she could not leave the plantation. That's what kept Grant going and to stay there. She put faith in him and that is what made Grant change Jefferson the little time he had with him to transform him into the man he really was, both Jefferson and Grant. I think Grant has a new perspective on life now since all this is over and I think he has started to believe, all because of Vivian. Vivian made him go see Jefferson and I think she knew that it would help him out in the future for his sake too.

Critical Analysis of Two Primary Documents

The Pueblo Revolt of the 1680's was a mutiny which claimed the lives of many Spanish colonizers. It is said to have taken place in order for the Indians to gain independence from the tyranny and harsh maltreatment they suffered as a result of the Spaniards rule of their lives. The analysis of two documents directly related to that uprising will give valuable insight to the events that actually occurred. It is imperative for one to remember both documents were written by the Spanish government.

One of the sources is a letter written to Father Francisco de Ayeta by Governor Don Antonio de Otermin of the New Mexico territory on September 8, 1680, directly following the revolt. The second is the testimony of Pedro Naranjo , an elderly Indian tribesman who returned to the Spanish after the revolt, possibly to escape with a minor sentence for his element of involvement in the alleged sedition, or truly in repentance for his belief that God was angry with him for dancing the idolatrous dances for the blessing of the pagan gods.Do my essay on Critical Analysis of Two Primary Documents CHEAP !

Otermin's letter was painstakingly written and contained overly apologetic tones in which he clearly and scrupulously describes his part in trying to protect the colonials from the Indians wrath. In addition, the governor attempted to encourage the father into believing that he had sent the reports of the planned disturbance to the lieutenant-general, but had received none due to the Indians intercepting the message; and prior attempts at notifying them of the impending calamity were not taken seriously.

According to the other document, which is Naranjo's testimony, it appears the unrest occurred because the Pueblos did not like the way in which the Spaniards demanded their conversion to Catholicism; and the cruelty they suffered when caught practicing their ancestral religion and planning prior insurrections. Naranjo stated he was repentant for the worship of other gods and feared he had made God angry.

After close scrutiny of these two documents, it appears that the upheaval occurred due to the deprivation and oppression that the Pueblos suffered at the hands of the Spaniards. The high casualty rate and the monumental size of the uprising can be attributed to the lack of consideration and care given to prior riot attempts in which several tribe members were hanged. Another possible reason for the activities was due to the leader Pope's threat of death to anyone who sympathized with the Spaniards or their way of life. Perhaps the other tribe members rebelled due to fear of Pope's wrath.

Lincoln and Kennedy

Heres a little part of US history which makes you go h-m-m-m

Have a history teacher explain this if they can?

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.

John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 146.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.

John F. Kennedy was elected President in 160.

The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.

Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.

Both Presidents were shot in the head.

Lincolns secretary was named Kennedy.

Kennedys secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners.

Both were succeeded by Southerners.

Both successors were named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.

Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 108.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born! ! in 18.

Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1.

Both assassins were known by their three names.

Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named Kennedy.

Kennedy was shot in a car called Lincoln.

Booth ran from the theater and was caught in a warehouse.

Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

And heres the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland.

A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.

World Cup

Brazil last won the world cup in 14. Before that they won it in 170. Add 170 and 14, it equals 64.

Germany last won in 10. Before that they won in 174. Add 10 and 174, it equals 64.

Argentina last won the world cup in 186. Before that they won it in 178. Add 178 and 186, it equals 64.

So going by this logic, The winner of the 00 world cup is the same as the 64 - 00 = 16 world cup. The 16 world cup was won by Brazil. It was really Brazil who won!!!

Importance of Drinking Enough Water

75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

In 7% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is

often mistaken for hunger.

Even MILD dehydration will slow down ones metabolism as much as %.

One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study.

Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

A mere % drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen.

Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 7%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Here is a list of what I thought very funny. I left it in the form that I received it.

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.(Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb. (Now thats more like it!)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body

to squirt blood 0 feet. (O.M.G.!)

A pigs orgasm lasts 0 minutes. (In my next life, I want to be a pig.)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy.) (Im still not over the pig.)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Do not try this at home...... maybe at work.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the males head off. (Honey, Im home. What the....?!)

The flea can jump 50 times its body length. For a human, that would be equivalent to jumping the length of a football field. (0 minutes...lucky pig... can you imagine??)

The catfish has over 7,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet. (Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (Hmmmmmm........wont go there.)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If youre ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (OK, so that would be a good thing....)

A cats urine glows under a black light. (I wonder who was paid to figure that out.)

An ostrichs eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed. (If they switch, theyll live a lot longer.)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (What about that pig??

The recession of the 170's which brought widespread youth unemployment throughout Europe, made the E.C. raise the need for the introduction of initiatives to meet the problems of the early school leavers especially those who left school with no formal education. In 177 Irelands department of education introduced the 'Pre-employment ' course, which soon gave rise to the Vocational preparation & Training Programme (VPTP) in 184. The Shannon Certificate, which ran from 18-187, was a project, which attempted to put into practice a range of new policy ideas to assist young people in the transition from education to adult working life. Both the VPTP & the Shannon Certificate were quite successful & high up take rates confirmed a nation-wide need for a senior cycle course aimed at preparing young people for transition to adult & working life. The Leaving Certificate Applied Programme introduced in 15 is based on the VPTP & the Shannon Certificate.

The Leaving Certificate Applied is a distinct, self-contained two-year programme aimed at preparing students for adult and working life. The programme puts an emphasis on forms of achievement and excellence, which the established Leaving Certificate has not recognised in the past. The Leaving Certificate Applied was introduced to recognise the talents of all students and provide opportunities for development in terms of responsibility, self-esteem and self-knowledge. It is an innovative programme in the way students learn, in what they learn and in the way their achievements are assessed. The Leaving Certificate Applied is intended to meet the needs of those students who are not adequately catered for by other Leaving Certificate programmes or who choose not to opt for such programmes. The advantage of Leaving Certificate Applied is that it focuses on the talents of each individual student and helps students apply what they learn in the real world. The two-year programme consists of four half-year blocks called Sessions and achievements are credited in each of these Sessions.

The L.C.A. courses are divided into three main areas

1.Vocational Preparation, which involves preparation for work, work experience, enterprise & communications. An essential part of the LCAP is the placement of students with local employers for work experience. (5% of time allocation)Order Custom The introduction of the Leaving Cert Applied to the Irish Education system paper

.General Education, involves giving the students general life skills. (The arts, social educ., languages etc.) (0% time allocation)

.Vocational Education is concerned with the development of mathematical & I.T. & practical skills needed for specialised areas (tourism, business etc.). I.T., the arts & leisure & recreation are required courses for all students. (0% time allocation)

There is also Discretionary Time, which includes the study of R.E. RSA, NCVA etc. (15% time allocation)

Each course contains a no. of modules. A module generally represents a half-years work and there is provision for some choice of modules. Choice also exists in relation to Vocational Specialisms. Two courses are selected from a no. of Vocational Specialisms eg Agriculture, Engineering, Technology & Community Care.

Students who successfully complete the programme will receive a Leaving Certificate from the Department of Education and Science. All credits awarded will be recorded on the Leaving Certificate Applied parchment.

This certificate will be awarded at three levels

Pass 60-6 % (10 - 1 credits)

Merit 70-84 % (140 - 16 credits)

Distinction 85-100 % (170 - 00 credits)

Candidates who acquire less than 10 credits will receive a Record of Experience. This will also apply to those who leave before the end of the programme. The Leaving Certificate Applied assessment takes place over the two years under three headings Satisfactory Completion of Modules

Performance of Student Tasks

Performance in the Terminal Examinations.

At the end of each Session a student is credited on satisfactory completion of the appropriate modules. External examiners appointed by the Department of Education and Science assess student Tasks. These Tasks may be in a variety of formats - written, audio, video, artefact etc. Each student is also required to produce a report on the process of completing the Task. This report may be incorporated in the evidence of task performance.

Terminal Examinations are provided in the following areas

English and Communication

Two Vocational Specialisms

Mathematical Applications

Language

Social Education

The written examinations will generally be held in the same period as the other Leaving Certificate examinations. Oral examinations, as well as written/aural examinations, will be held in the case of all the languages including English and Communications.

It is possible for students to take up employment on the successful completion of the LCA. After successful completion of the LCAP a student can proceed to further education through PLC courses, which lead to National Certificate Level , awarded by the NCVA (Nat. Co. for Voc. Awards). By achieving an NCVA Level award a student can become eligible for admission to rd level courses in RTC's, DIT & subsequently to some degree programmes in university.
