Dickens also uses the book to get across his views on the laws of the time and how they were too strict. He does this by personification of the law in the form of the lawyer Jaggers, who is strong minded and quite a negative person in the book. Although Joe gives a reason for being so kind to Mrs Joe, he seems quite strange because he is so kind and doesn't even shout at Mrs Joe when she is pushing him around. This gives a very strong illusion that he is a caricature and not a character.

Because Joe is portrayed as being quite dim Dickens compensates for this by showing him as a very hard working and skilful blacksmith. Not only does this make him more realistic, because most people did work very hard when the book was written, Joe being a blacksmith fits in very well with the story. This is also good because being a blacksmith he doesn't have to have a good education so he seems foolish to the people around him. However, when he goes to see Miss Havisham with Pip, Miss Havisham seems to understand Joe more than Mrs Joe and Pumplechook ever had.
