The Era of the Ideal American Life

The 150's is thought of today as a time of nostalgic bliss (especially for the right wing conservatives), it was a time of sameness, conformity and "blending in;" it featured the perfect family, with the perfect life, sheltered in the perfect little house. People were assaulted with this image in every advertisement, television or radio show. They became obsessed with fitting the image.

Following the end of World War II, Americans had a grand desire to move on with their lives and promoted a return to normalcy. Marriage ceremonies were being performed in massive numbers and following those marriages there was a boom in babies. The citizens of The United States were ready to settle into a comfortable and safe way of life. The war had caused too much suffering and neglect and "by 145 almost every-one had a long list of unfilled material wants." "Never before had material products that Americans associated with 'the good life'-automobiles, dishwashers, stereos, televisions, and more-become so readily available to large segments of the population." It was a decade whose morality and values were centered on the media and it's depiction of "real life". The materialistic decade of the 150s was also a decade of conformity. The acquisition of material goods, which had been scarce in the Great Depression and during World War II, became the main focus of postwar lives. Material goods such as cars and other household items had become more affordable to middle class families and were viewed as an important addition to the suburban family. "Most citizens embraced the material benefits of prosperity as evidence of the virtue of 'the American way." This significant acquisition of goods was driven especially by the new way the media of television and advertising portrayed the suburban family life as the ideal.

Each family consisted of a mom, dad and children; gone were the days of living with extended family. "Unlike many urban neighborhoods, where immigrant parents or grandparents might be living on the same block…single family dwellers often left their relatives and in-laws behind. As a result, ethnic lifestyles were less pronounced in the suburbs." The dad went off to work each day to earn a living and put food on his family's plates while the mother took care of the children and did the housework (in pearls and flawless makeup no less). Conformity was everywhere in America - from cars to clothes, from social behavior to politics. Most women had one choice conform to be a housewife and mother. Most men dreamed only of success in the corporate world. It was an ideal society of "economic and racial homogeneity."

Despite the tempting calls of suburbia and consumer America, there were those who were against it. Jack Kerouac and Allan Ginsberg were the founders of the Beats, a group of professed bohemian writers who fiercely opposed the conformity of American society. "According to Kerouac, the word beat had various definitions and connotations for the writers such as despair over the beaten state of the individual in mass society and belief in the beatitude, or blessedness, of the natural world and in the powers of the beat of jazz music and poetry." Their works of art expressed contempt for the mindless American who followed the media/money driven culture of their time as well as sorrow for the loss of the "individual." The art that they produced went against all of the "ideals" of the 150's; everything that the typical American was "supposed" to dream of was subject to criticism by the beats. The beats were among the first radicals to dapple in drug use and experiment with their sexuality openly, for conservative America this was shocking. "Through their journey of social revolution, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac began their quest with one idea for America in mind Truth." They felt that Americans were so caught up in consumer culture that they had lost all sight of what was really important or "true" in life. Their poetry and literature are now revered as some of the finest works of art today, but ironically their message is still in need of enforcement.

In schools, students will be disciplined if they do any of the following; fail to follow reasonable and clear instructions from a teacher, behave in such a way as to threaten the health of a student or teacher, commit an act of violence or cause significant damage or destruction to property, or if knowingly involved in the theft of property.

Also, if they possess, use or deliberately assist others in the use of illegal substances, behave in a way which threatens the good order of the schools program or facilities, consistently behave in a manner which interferes with the educational opportunities of any other pupil, engages in unacceptable discriminatory behaviour or harassment of another person, and is over the age of 15 years and fails to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided by the school, they can be suspended for up to 10 days. In extreme cases, the student can be expelled from the school.

I think that these days, when a student does something wrong, and are suspended, they are really just getting days off. It is not discipline, the way they get to stay home and do what they want most of the time. It is just like a holiday to them, so when they do something wrong, they don't mind getting suspended. These days, discipline is not hard on students. The discipline we get does not leave any effect on us, unlike the discipline in the old days, where they would be hit with a can or paddle. This kind of discipline would leave an effect on the students these days, as years ago, the students were too scared of the punishment, to do anything wrong.

My opinion is that they should change the discipline system to be harsher, so the students will think twice before making any trouble. They should not suspend the students and send them home, the students should get an in-school suspension where they have school duties or school work that they have missed. Weekend detention should also be introduced, as this would make the students change their ways because they would not like to spend all their weekends at school when they could be elsewhere.Do my essay on Schools should have stronger discipline CHEAP !

Overall, my opinion is that schools should have stronger discipline, as students would not behave so badly if they know the discipline was harsher. The discipline these days does not affect students in the slightest so students have no reason that can hold them back from breaking the rules.

Chapter 1, The Drop

I am the Orb. I am about ft. in diameter. I look a lot like a ball. I am being sent to the planet Echo 41. I am the ultimate war machine. I am to make peace with the native people. The natives are all hedgehogs about inches long, 1 inch in wide. They used to be dominating the planet until the Flood came. The Flood is a species of military like people that are trying to take over the planet. The Flood are about the size of an action figure, so it is almost impossible for the hedgehogs or the "Paq" to kill them. I, the Orb, can kill the Flood, but it will take me a while. When this drop ship I am on drops me, I am supposed to meet up with two "Paq" named Max & Joe. Here I go.

The landing was rough because the Flood didn't want me to drop. My men in the drop ship did a good job of killing them off and dropping me in a secret place. While there, my main radar and directional programs began running. Then I automatically adjusted my lens into focus and brightness to see on this new dark, barren planet. Although it was not always like this before the Flood came, I give off a slight greenish glow. I am reinforced with steel. I have two barrels on each side of my lens that allows me to see. They both shoot up to 00 rounds per minute. I also have one shotgun barrel sticking out below my lens that I can retract into myself while not in use. The hedgehogs are very strong and have their quills on their back that the guns the Flood shoot cannot penetrate. But if they are shot in their bellies or heads, they die quickly.Buy cheap Echo 421 term paper

I am doing a full systems check when I hear a noise behind me. I do a quick 60 degrees turn, but it is just a small bug. I use my twin thrusters to go slowly to where my program is telling me to go. I then hear a big noise behind me. It is a troop of Flood soldiers. Since I am so small, they have not yet seen me. I position myself wisely, then begin to fire rapidly right at them. I kill three but there is still one left. I pull back, and he is very confused. I then kill him easily because he was badly hurt.

Chapter , The New Info.

I then meet up with Max & Joe right where my program was telling me to go. I introduce myself and they give me the info. they knew about the positions of the Flood's weak and strong points. I follow them into their tunnels. They then take me to their friends, Bob and Jim. These four are the elite hedgehog fighters. They are some of the only ones left now that the Flood has overtaken this planet. Then while in these tunnels, I find out the terrible news that if the Flood capture this planet, it will be the last out of that the Flood need to form a super weaponThe Discombobulator.

I then decide that it will be wise for me to go out without the Paq and gather more information about the Flood's fighting power and technique. The Paq agrees, and I set out alone to see what I can find. Along the way I have to beat down some Flood but nothing is serious. My programs are telling me to go to a major Flood structure that is much larger than any of the other structures. I am holding something that could produce great power. I figure it is the point that the power from the other planets will link up with.

I charge up my small thrusters and punch it to the large structure. I stay well out of range and zoom in on the kind of protection. It is heavily guarded with twice as many Floods as I had predicted. I have a plan though and it is very risky.

Chapter , The Power

I go back to the tunnels and tell all the Paq to go to the structure and attack when I give them the signal. While they head out, I hit the boost and am there 0 minutes before they arrive. I bust my way inside by firing nonstop until I reach the inside of the building. Inside it is too quiet for a very special structure. I proceed on through a large door at the end of the hallway. I go through this door and I find hundreds of Flood creatures. I race back out of the building to find a safe spot.

I then signaled to the Paq to move in, and they did. I go in by myself and make a distraction. While their backs are turned, the Paq move in and wipe them out slowly but efficiently. I have the Paq secure the building and I go to the main room where I see an amazing sight. It is a super computer, the linking system, and something elsethe key to controlling the Flood. This specific part is only in this structure, so I have complete power at my chip tips. I research more and find that with the press of a button, little chips implanted in the brains of every Flood will explode, killing the entire Flood in seconds. This is to control population, but I am going to kill all of them.

Chapter 4, The Final Decision

After talking it over with the remaining government of the Paq and the government that sent me here, they decide to kill the entire Flood to restore peace to this galaxy. I select the nine planets the Flood is on in this galaxy, holding my breath and push the detonator. The entire Flood falls over. We all rejoice while the clean up of the bodies is going on.

The two of our governments join together on these nine planets and become the United Gov.'s. We keep this Discombobulation in service in case anyone tries to overtake us. I am allowed to live with the Paq and now I am to be one of the family.

The planet Echo 41 is no longer barren and dark. It is very bright, green, and has running water again. I have restored peace here for now and hope I will never be needed that much again. Although, if I am needed, I will carry out my duties as one of the Paq.

For airlines, business class is fare game

Brad Foss

Boston Sunday Globe, October 1, 00Custom writing service can write essays on airlines

Summary With airlines expected to lose nearly $8 billion for the second year in a row, the industry has become less generous with business customers who want to fly on the cheap. The airline industries have added more restrictions. Carries have increased fees for paper tickets and extra baggage. The airlines no longer offer free alcoholic drinks on international ones. Also carriers have gotten particularly tough with corporate customers, refusing to let them use discounts negotiated by their employer when they purchase cheaper fares aimed at leisure travelers. The cheapest leisure fares are about one-sixth the price of typical business fares. If customers buy cheap fares at leisure travelers, the chances that they have to follow a lot of restrictions such as these tickets are nonrefundable tickets; customers will have to pay a fee to fly standby; and those customers who miss their flights will have to buy brand new tickets. Travelers think because of the airlines add more restrictions and fees are really annoying, so the benefits of cheap tickets generally outweigh the downside.

Bias Air travelers began to curtail spending roughly 18 months ago as a result of the economic downturn. Also it is affected by last year's terrorist attacks. To survive, major carriers undertook a wide range of cost-cutting measures. Employees were laid off. Planes were grounded. Schedules were shrunk. But in contrast, the stricter rules, extra fess, and scaled back services aggravate travelers. According to David Swierenga, chief economist at the Washington based Air Transport Association said "the industry is losing its shirts, is flat on its back and is looking for every dollar or revenue that it can find." If business customers want to fly on the cheap, the airlines will add hefty fees with tight restrictions. These carriers hope to generate tens of millions of dollars by charging customers more fees on these cheap tickets.

Reaction Now a day, it is not easy to find cheap tickets without restrictions and fees. The question for the travelers is "should they buy the refundable fares?" To me, travelers have to be careful about making their flights and sticking to their original travel itineraries because they will have to pay for fees if they decide to change the schedules or cancellations. Also if travelers cannot decide their schedules, they should be willing to pay the fares without the restrictions or refundable fares. Also, it would be better way for both travelers and airlines, if travelers would be willing to pay a touch more and carriers are easy on the restrictions and fixed the problems that cause delays.

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. The debate between dualists and physicalists is one of especially interesting qualities. A dualist is a philosopher that believes that the human mind consists of two very distinct, individual and intertwined pieces. One piece is the physical brain. Chemical reactions and electrical impulses course through the brain in order to produce sensations through the body. Combined with these physical characters is a soul, or an organism that interprets these impulses in the brain. According to the dualist, it is the soul that creates the individual and unique sensations inside your brain. On the other hand, a physicalist would argue that the experiences occurring in the brain, are nothing more than that, physical impulses. You taste the chocolate, the brain interprets the different impulses, the taste is created, and that is that. Nothing further, no soul involved, nothing more elaborate than the brain.

Physicalists argue that explanations for tastes and brain functions will be explained through scientific research, such as atomic structures and chemical makeups have been researched and proven through science, in essence saying that physicalists have no theory for their beliefs, rather they choose to wait for science to verify their beliefs. On the other hand, a dualist replies to such an argument that those processes of science would not provide a necessary answer to the dilemma. A dualist points out that the two processes are completely different. On the one hand, when a scientist breaks down the chemical makeup of a substance, he does only that, understands what makes up that particular material. There is no explanation as to the cause of a particular taste, feel, or view of the object. Why does it look the way it does to me [the dualist]? Why does it affect my [the dualist] taste buds in this way?

Both arguments make very valid points, however I tend to lean towards Nagel's approach that perhaps there is no soul, but that the brain has something more than just a physical process inside of it, that it operates on a mental plane (pg. 4). This would explain the learned approach to certain situations. When you experience something that causes pain, your brain creates a reaction that tells your body it's hurt. However, how is it that we learn to avoid the action that brought us pain? Leaning towards Nagel's non-soul/mental observation, perhaps the brain does operate on a level other than strictly physical. This would explain how schools of fish, or dolphins learn to defend themselves against sharks, while humans combine to form powerful nations in order to provide themselves with security and whatnot.

The brain is a very complex organism, and it's true operations are still a mystery to man. Both physicalists and dualists provide valid arguments as to their though processes, however, neither sit completely well with me, and I tend to lean towards a physical organism that operates on more than one plane; on a physical plane as well as a mental one.Custom Essays on Dualism and Skepticism Overviews

Skepticism, from what I'm gathering, is the equivalent to that immature little brother we all know and have to love. The arguments of a skeptic are virtually the same as those of a child. "Nuh uh." "How do you know?" "Why is that?" "So what?" "And?" It is a mass of mindless arguments that there seems to be no answer to.

According to Nagel, a skeptic is someone who believes that "You can't know on the basis of what's in your mind that there's no world outside it." "There may or may not be an external world, and if there is it may or may not be completely different from how it seems to you there's no way for you to tell." When approached with the argument that there must be some form of external causes to explain our experiences, they counter by saying that these "experiences" are unclear to a person because they have never been experienced directly. All experiences are taken in through observation by the mind.

Therefore the argument stands that the mind might still be creating the world you believe you are in. This leaves you without any concept for comparison. As Nagel put it "Impressions and appearances that do not correspond to reality must be contrasted with others that do correspond to reality, or else the contrast between appearance and reality is meaningless." He then goes on to say "He is kidding himself, because it couldn't be true that the physical world doesn't really exist, unless somebody could observe that it doesn't exist."

Skepticism therefore seems to fall to the views of verificationism. Verificationism allows the establishment of ideas through comparisons of what we are familiar with. Skeptics believe that the mind is something prone to miscommunication of what it observes; thereby allowing reality to be completely different from what it takes in. This view is somewhat far fetched, because at the same time that it says the brain mistakes what it sees, it attempts to claim that the brain creates all you see. So you are faced with an absent minded professor. Brilliant in his ideas, with no idea what he is saying. This sort of contradiction tends to make skepticism a harder view to listen to as well as accept.

LET'S

TALK

ABOUT STRESS Help with essay on STRESS

What is stress?

What does 'stress' mean? You are about to write an exam? You're stressed. Awaiting for your results? You're stressed. Relationship lousy ? You're stressed . Problem at work ? Health worries? Too much pressure all around ? OK, so you're stressed. Isn't everyone.

Life without stimulation or challenge would be intolerably boring and reasonable amounts of pressure heighten our arousal and performance.

Like job satisfaction, stress is not a precise term and it is used in slightly different ways by different authors. Approaches to the study of stress have taken different forms, as shown below

· as an organism's response to a demand or to events that challenge it (Seyle, 176);

· as an event external to the individual that places demands upon him/her (Kahn, 164);

· as a characteristic or the environment that poses a threat to the individual (Caplan et al.,175);

· as a state that results from a misfit between a person's skills and the demands placed upon him/her (McGrath, 176).

Stress is seen either as something external to the individual, or as an internal state or as an interaction between the two.

Why the Concern about "stress"

· Stress can be DANGEROUS- lack of concentration can cause accidents.

· Stress can be COSTLY- key people may have to leave because of ill health.

· Stress can be DAMAGING- irritability , let alone poor commitment to the employer, may give an organisation a poor public image.

The Costs of Stress.

The total annual cost to the country of work related accidents and ill-health is estimated by the health and safety Executive to be between 11 billion pounds and 16 billion pounds (Davies and Teasdale 14). 7 billion of this total is accounted for by workforce stress (Rochez 14).

Between 50 and 60 million working days are lost through stress.(Institute of Management 16).

Almost 1 in employees suffer from occupational STRESS ( European Commission 1).

The release of adrenaline and steroids associated with stress causes various physiological changes, such as

· increased blood pressure;

· increased muscle tension;

· increased sweating;

· release of glucose and fats into the blood;

· dry mouth.

These physiological changes can be directly related to the observed outcomes of stress in individuals.

However, studies have suggested as association between stress and the following illnesses

· ulcers;

· allergies;

· headaches;

· coronary heart disease;

· cancer;

· asthma.

TACKLING THE SYMPTOMS OF STRESS

When you have confronted the cause, you can deal with the effects. There are two ways; you can prevent stress build-up by increasing your energy levels.

At the same time, you should treat the symptoms. For plenty of energy you need a good night's sleep. Cut back on coffee, tea and cola (it's the caffeine in them), especially late at night. Watch your alcohol intake and the cigarettes.

Eat a balanced diet- take extra vitamins B an C for your energy levels, and try natural herbal remedies. Get a good night's sleep every night and you're half way there.

It is important to eat regular meals- do not skip meals. Try and keep the consumption of convenience foods to the minimum, as many of them contain large amounts of sugar and salt.

Try and drink at least a pint of water a day to offset dehydration.

Consuming large amounts of alcohol will neither solve your problems or improve your health. REMEMBER the recommended maximum levels of alcohol PER WEK are

MALE 8 units

INCLUDE RELAXATION IN YOUR DAILY SCHEDULE

It is VITAL to include a period of relaxation each day. Not only it will help increase your coping resources, it will make the remainder of your time more productive.

Some people do this by doing something they have already discovered to be relaxing. For example

· Listening to music

· reading

· having a bath- with perhaps the addition of essential oils

· just sitting for a few minutes and daydreaming

EXERCISE

It takes as little as only three thirty minute sessions to increase your level of physical fitness. Although the exercise may make you tired it will also stimulate you and help you to combat the negative effects of stress.

Exercise will

· release the tension

· make our bodies stronger and better able to cope with the debilitating effects of stress

· make us feel better about ourselves

· increase our energy and stamina

CHOOSE AN EXERCISE THAT YOU ENJOY!!!!!

TAKING REGULAR BREAKS

Taking regular breaks is important.

It helps you work efficiently and to be less tired at the end of the day.

1. If you are going to be working on one task all day, take a walk at lunch time.

. Take a couple of minutes break, every so often throughout the day, to change your position.

. Allow yourself 10 minutes to yourself a day. Pencil in an appointment with yourself.

DO TAKE YOUR ANNUAL LEAVE- IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR HEALTH……

To tackle the actual symptoms, relaxation techniques really do help, so try massage, meditation, exercise and yoga. NONE OF THESE WILL MAKE THE CAUSE OF YOUR STRESS GO AWAY- ONLY YOU CAN DO THAT -BUT DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT IS THE BEST WAY TO START..

If any of these symptoms of stress sound familiar or if you are experiencing two or more of these symptoms, it very likely you are not facing up to something that's bothering you and causing you stress. It's important you acknowledge this problem and tackle it as soon as possible.

When William Shakespeare wrote the play Macbeth, he made a point to make appearance and reality two very different things. Practically nothing in the play is what it appears to be. When the witches chant, ?Fair is foul and foul is fair? in Act I, Scene I, they are foreshadowing the appearance versus reality theme. This line that they chant means things that look good are really bad and vise versa.

At first, the witches? predications about Macbeth sound like good news, but as one soon finds out, they lead to death and destruction. Also, it was quite ironic when Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth, ?look like th? innocent flower, but be the serpent under?t? (57), because she too is evil inside; she and Macbeth seem like very good hosts and nice people when actually they are plotting murder. Yet, another appearance that is that is drastically different the reality is how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both seem to achieve happiness with all their murdering, but in reality, they only gain torment, and, as we see later, death. Also, Lady Macbeth seems to be the bloodthirsty one, but can?t kill Duncan, while Macbeth seems to always be scared, but kills the king and the guards.

Of course, there are also the physical differences between appearance and reality, such as in Act II, Scene I, when Macbeth thinks he sees a dagger floating in front of him, but can?t touch it.When William Shakespeare wrote the play Macbeth, he made a point to make appearance and reality two very different things. The young people of Singapore are the hope of the future. In spite of all our parents and other adults who take care of us, the time is not far when we have to take over the reins from them and run not only our own lives, but the country as well. It is true that there are many things that we have in Singapore that can prompt us to take things easy and be content. It is so tempting to do nothing and just enjoy the benefits. But there is actually a lot that young people of our age can do to bring this country to greater heights. We often think of what our futures lays ahead of us. As a youth of Singapore, I share the same views, dreams, aspirations and concerns of a normal teenager too.

Society sees the youth of Singapore as spoilt brats who only craze for materialistic things, who worry about their boy-girl relationships. It is even worse when the society claims that we do not show any concern about what is happening around the world or in our own country. The truth is that our youths are constantly suppressed and overloaded with schoolwork and cramming for exams that they have little or no time to bother much about issues touching and concerning our society.

Teenagers will have different needs compared to a young child. As teenagers, we tend to develop different interests. We will also begin to go out with our friends more frequently, instead of going out with our parents or family members. Peer pressure also starts to set in. the problem starts when the attention the teenagers want is their parents' attention. Parents living in the twenty-first century are usually so caught up with work and will not be able to spend quality and quantity time with their teenager sons and daughters. When they do not interact with their children, they will not know what their children's needs are. Therefore parents splurge on gifts and branded items to satisfy their children's 'needs'. However, gifts are not what their children want. When teenagers do not get attention from their parents, they will get the attention they desire by committing certain crimes that will anger their parents. I feel that parents should set aside a good amount of time for their children and I can say that pampering them with gifts, money and expensive things will not do the trick.

Today, Singapore again faces physical and economic threats. We have to deal with terrorism and the current SARS outbreak. Our economy has lacked shine for over two years. We worry about our parents' paycut and the possibility of retrenchment. When the sole breadwinner of the family loses his job, we suffer as well. We should also be resigned to the fact that the government decides to reduce cost by cutting the employers' CPF (Central Provident Fund) rates and increasing the GST (Goods and Service Tax) by 1%. Help with essay on Aspirations and Concerns of a Singaporean Youth

As a youth myself, we are constantly concerned about how we will fare academically in school so as to make ourselves and our parents proud and also balance our life with sports, leisure and play. In a 15 Survey, it was found that when asked what youth hope to do in the 1st century, most of the answers were in relation to personal or individual goals. Of the remaining, only 14.% were in relation to the community or nation whereas only .8% were in relation to global roles. An interesting finding is that 5.% actually have no idea what they would be doing. A related finding is found in the 000 National Youth Council survey where it is found that 55% had not made plans to pursue their life goals.

As for me, my three most important aspirations are to own my own house and car and moving on to further education. Many students work part-time in order to earn pocket money. Quite a substantial number also work to gain experience and to occupy their spare time. They are not required to work in order to cover their education fees but they take up part-time work just to earn extra cash to support their lifestyle which covers daily expenses, food, clothes, and on anything they want. A very small proportion of youth put their part-time earnings into savings or education. Many are concerned about their friends, future career, or even physical appearance.

It is true that the winds of change are blowing all the time. Whether we will be the windmill that is powered by the winds and in turn generate growth, or we will be the concrete wall upon which the winds blows in vain will decide future events for the next fifty years, maybe more.

SOCIOLOGY

Sociology is the systematic study of human social life, groups, and societies.

. Sociology studies how groups and societies shape who you are. One area of study can be knowledge, for example, why do young people reject or accept the ideals of their parents? And a second area of study can be Medicine, for example, why do rich people often receive better health care than poor people?

.

Write my Essay on Afghanistan for me

This picture would interest a Sociologist because as we know sociology is the study of human social life, groups and societies and this picture clearly shows that. It shows people around joining each other to make a Global Village. So this would be the study of human social life and groups.

This picture shows as a mosque at night time near the holy month of RAMADAN (where you cant eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset) for Muslim people around the world. This would interest a Social Institutions Sociologist, because they are the ones studying about family, religion, and politics and how they affect peoples lives.

This picture is a cartoon of suicide, which is really becoming a part of sociologist's studies. The numbers of suicides are increasing today around the world. Some sociologists argue that suicide is a very personal decision and it should be up to the person but some are saying it is not the right thing to do, so there are lots of arguments about suicide in today's world and this picture will definitely catch a sociologist's eye.

This is a picture of family members joining each other to celebrate EID (A special day after RAMADAN among Muslims) this would also interest a Social Institutions Sociologist because it is Family and Social life gatherings.

This is just a definition of Sociology but not in words form but in picture form. It shows us people are being magnified and that means the study of human social life, groups and societies and that is what Sociology is and I am positive this will interest all type of Sociologists.

4. Sociology of Missions

The field is defined as the study of the diffusion or spread of religions from a social scientific perspective. The social sciences used in the website include sociology, social psychology, anthropology, political science, and economics. However, I would not excude any attempt to examine the empirical side of the spread of religions by systematic methods that allow for the study to be replicated and the findings shown to be false. More often they will be modified or elaborated.

The social scientific study of missions overlaps to some extent, sometimes to a great extent, with missiology. This is because missiology, which is the study of missions by religious scholars, may employ the social sciences to analyze data on the spread of religions. However, missiology is an interdisciplinary field of study maintained by religious groups and is therefore basically theological or normative in approach. It is useful, therefore, to distinguish missiology from the social scientific study of religions. source (http//www.sompsite.com)

Frida Kahlo was a very talented artist which painted mainly self-portraits of herself. Many people have defined Fridas mania for self-portraits as a sort of therapy to survive (bus accident, abortions, surgery operations and weird medical treatments of her age). She painted herself because she was often alone. In these paintings, she painted herself performing different tasks which people thought were very disturbing. She lived from July 6, 107 to July 1, 154 and she was originally from Mexico. Her life was to be a long series of physical traumas, and the first of these came early in her childhood. At the age of six, she was stricken with polio which left her with a limp. During her childhood, she was a fearless tomboy, which made Frida her fathers favorite. He had advanced ideas about her education, and in 1 she entered the Preparatoria (National Preparatory School), the most prestigious educational institution in Mexico, which had only just begun to admit girls.

It was there that she met her husband-to-be, Diego Rivera, who had recently returned home from France. He had been paid to paint a mural there. Kahlo was attracted to him, and not knowing how to deal with the emotions she felt, she expressed them by teasing him and by trying to spark the jealousy of the painters wife at that time, Lupe Marin.

In 15, Kahlo suffered a serious accident which changed her life forever. She was traveling in a bus which collided with a tramcar, and suffered serious injuries to her right leg and pelvis. After getting in the accident, Frida was unable to have children. This took a while for Frida to comprehend. It also meant that she faced a life-long battle against pain. In 16, during her recovery, she painted her first self-portrait, the beginning of a long chain in which she expressed the emotional stages and reactions of the events going on in her life. In 18, she met Rivera again through her friendship she had with the photographer Tina Modotti. Riveras marriage had just collapsed, and the two found that they had much in common. They married each other in August 1.

Riveras artistic reputation was expanding very fast in the U.S. In 10, the couple left for San Francisco. Then, they briefly returned to Mexico. They went to New York in 11 for the Rivera gallery organized by the Museum of Modern Art. In 1, Rivera was paid to paint a major series of murals for the Detroit Museum, and during that time Kahlo suffered a miscarriage. While recovering, she painted Miscarriage in Detroit, the first of her truly deep and emotional self-portraits. The style she painted was completely different from her husbands. Her paintings were not influenced by one person but they were based on Mexican folk art and in particular on the pictures that showed or symbolized a wish or desire.Do my essay on Frida Khalo CHEAP !

Frida had many famous works that were recognized. A few were The Two Fridas, The Little Deer, Roots, and Self Portrait with Monkey. Frida opened new doors to the art world. She was one of the first people to paint such disturbing pictures. She painted self-portraits which depicted her as something else. Other painters use the same style of painting to show how they are feeling at that moment. As you look at Frida's paintings, you see she uses white, red,

Kahlo pretended not to consider her work important. From Detroit they went once again to New York, where Rivera had been paid to paint a mural in the Rockefeller Center. The work broke out into an enormous scandal when the supervisor ordered the half-completed work destroyed because of the political imagery Rivera insisted on including. But Rivera stayed in the United States, which he loved and Kahlo now hated. When they returned to Mexico in 15, Rivera had an affair with Kahlos younger sister Cristina. This incident was a turning point in their relationship. Kahlo had a series of affairs with both men and women which were to continue for the rest of her life. One who would gladly have had a love affair with Kahlo but for the fact that she was not attracted to him, was the leading figure of the Surrealist Group, AndrBreton. Breton arrived in 18 and was enchanted with Mexico, which he found to be a naturally surrealist country, and with Kahlos painting.

In January 140, she was a participant with Rivera in the International Exhibition of Surrealism held in Mexico City. Later, she denied being a true Surrealist.

Her health grew worse from about 144 onwards, and Kahlo underwent the first of many operations on her spine and her crippled foot. In early 150, her body reached a crisis, and she had to go into hospital in Mexico City, where she remained for a year.

After her remarriage to Rivera, her artistic reputation continued to grow. She was included in prestigious group shows in the Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She took up teaching at the new experimental art school 'La Esmeralda', and proved an inspiration to her students.

While the 140s had seen her produce some of her finest work, her paintings now became more clumsy and chaotic, thanks to the joint effects of pain, drugs and drink.

In 15, Kahlo had her right leg amputated below the knee. Soon afterwards, she died in her sleep, apparently as the result of an embolism, though there was a suspicion among those close to her that she had found a way to commit suicide.

When I look at Khalo's paintings, I see a life being told through art. I see majestic use of colors and shadows to get the symbolism behind each one of her paintings across to the viewer. I observe the wonderful use of colors she uses, like the red, white, and blue in all her paintings.

The Awakening

By Kate Chopin

The Awakening immediately reminded me of a book a read recently called The Great Gatsby. Chopin's informative writing immediately brought me back to Gatsby's huge mansion. Though Mrs. Ponteillier and friends do not seem nearly as wealthy as Gatsby, I see similarities in the way each other set up the book. In the Great Gatsby, a few fairly wealthy individuals live in an isolated area near the bay. The cottages and the people in The Awakening remind me of the beginning in the Great Gatsby.

Chopin's writing style is unique. Though I have not read many women's authors, I have noticed that The Country of the Pointed Firs as well as The Awakening, a lot of detailed commentary and insight into the personalities and surrounding involved in each setting. Chopin writing style is more interesting then Sarah Orne Jewett. Although they are similar, Jewett uses more description while Chopin tells a better story. Writers like Chopin are easier to follow and grab my attention more so then the slow, detailed styles.Custom writing service can write essays on tea

The biggest problem with The Awakening and The Country of the Pointed Firs is the lack of action. Books like Apt Pupil and Great Gatsby have me wanting to read. The Country of the Pointed Firs and The Awakening are too slow and should have a larger, more interesting story line. I have not reached the point in my literary career where I can enjoy a book for how well it is written. These books, are well written, but involve old, sewing club type individuals that are dull. Mrs. Ponteillier represents a simple adult during the early 100s.

A River Runs Through It takes place in small, Mizula Montana in the early 100's, like in The Awakening. Mrs. Ponteillier's character is like that of Mrs. MacLean in the book/movie A River Runs Through It. In the book, Mrs. MacLean is the classic housewife. Her life is monotonous and dull. Everyday Mrs. MacLean sews, cleans, and cooks all day long. She does this while her husband teaches and participates in sermons at the local Protestant church. Her boys work and fish all day long, with an occasional cocktail in between. During this time period women were dull. They were not given a chance to work. All day long the housewife sat at home and attended to her family. Women were content with the idea of being a housewife. Today women are taking business roles in society. They are getting more involved with the outside world then back in the day. Because of their limited role in the time frame of The Awakening, I see very little action taking place in this book. Though it has gotten off to a better start then The Country with the Pointed Firs, I see a similar ending taking place. The dull characters will make for a well-written book, but a very uneventful finish.

Assessment of Internet Article on

Organizational Culture

The first article that I reviewed was Toolpack Consulting (guide), which discusses organizational culture. They give examples of cultural change at several different companies but the main focus was on the cultural change at Chrysler Corporation. The article describes the problems that Chrysler was facing and walks you through the stages of the implementation of cultural change. The stages dealt with quality issues to the pitfalls of cultural change. The article discussed the use of cross-functional teams and the employee problem solving teams. They talked about the cultural changes of un-freezing, change, and re-freezing. They devoted a great deal of the article to the un-freezing stage in order to create change. While diversity usually applies to race and or gender Chrysler used diversity in it's teams by mixing engineers with mechanics, assembly line workers, and extended their communication to include auto dealers. The diversity gave them a clear picture and provided the feedback that they needed to un-freeze and change. A quote from the article "The power of cultural change is strong; strong enough to turn a dinosaur into a state of the art profit maker" was a strong declaration of how important company culture is to the success of all companies.

Although I am a company of one and this article talks about huge corporations and the changes that they made it made me think about the changes that we make at all levels and how they apply to all levels of business. I reflected on one of the issues that they raised about the complacency that tends to set in when the changes are starting to reap the profits and we think we can quit and sit back. I think this applies to a company of one also.

The second article that I chose also was from a consulting firm; Organized Change Consultancy, Re-engineering and TQM , The Balanced Scorecard and Performance Improvement, Assessing and Improving Your Organization, The Nine Pitfalls of Organizational Change Chaudron,D Phd. Dr. Chaudron uses a thought-provoking quote that is reflective of organizational change and the future of our corporate culture. " The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be." Valery,P., French poet and philosopher. He continues to talk about the fact that planning is less about future decisions and more about the impact and consequences of today's decisions. In creating change the article stresses the need to flatten the company and involve the employees with information and authority. Companies must be specific in their training approach and empower teams to manage themselves with the direction of a coach. He list one of the pitfalls of change is many companies that think there is a quick fix solution without the total commitment of the entire organization. He feels goals need to have the resources and management determination to see their success. Goals also need to be SMART Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound. Goals focus on what and strategies focus on how. Dr. Chaudron also includes methods to treat inter-group issues, cross-functional teams and matrix organizations to deal with issues that cut across organizational lines. Increasing the future of change he contends is not a one shot effort but a continuous and on-going effort.

I feel this article also held information and a blueprint that can be applied to all organizations. I also think he highlighted and warned of using the wrong method for your corporation. He stressed knowing the problem and using the right solution to fix it. Not to change just for the sake of change.

The third article I chose was a little more individual as it dealt with character, Managers'Lack of Character Must be Fixed Groten, E. I chose this article because it didn't deal with all the big issues of organizational culture but dealt with the issue of culture from the ground up. Eric Groten starts her article by stating managers must learn to treat people better and that it requires buy-in from the top and the creation of a management-coach position. She goes on to site several examples of managers lack of character and lack of respect for their co-workers. It is the choices that we make as individuals. Lack of character can affect the culture of an organization.

I chose the above articles because I enjoyed reading them and that they applied to the text that we are studying; also they gave me insight into ways that I could use to improve my own business and the people I work with on a daily basis. Rosewood

The movie, Rosewood, takes place in Florida consisting of an African American community, where many own property and businesses. Mr. Wright, the only white man to own a business in Rosewood, plans to expand his business and purchasing more land. Although he has an affair with one of his African American employees, he still feels some racism. On New Year's Eve, a mysterious man comes to town, named Mr. Mann. He stays with Sylvester Carrier and his family, deciding whether or not he wants to stay permanently.

Soon, a great amount of anxiety between Rosewood, and the neighboring white town Sumner arises with many racial disputes to come. A young woman named Fannie, from the white town Sumner, falsely claims that she has been attacked by an African-American stranger. In doing so, she was really covering for her adulterous affair with an abusive white man. The town sought out to find the attacker, who was suspected to be an African-American convict by the name Jesse Hunter. Sara Carrier, Sylvester's mother, witnesses that Fannie was indeed not attacked by an African American. The local sheriff, who disbelieves that Fannie was attacked by an African American, still goes on searching in an ineffective and ruthless attempt to catch the "attacker."Order College Papers on Rosewood

Mr. Mann, after escaping from being lynched, takes the Sylvester's family to a train, with the help of Mr. Wright, fleeing from the sheriff and his mob. It has been said that no one really knows how many African Americans were killed during this Rosewood massacre.

Out of all the roles in the movie, Mr. Wright changed from the beginning of the film to the very end. He started out having his racial moments, although he was having an affair with one of his African American employees. He earned trust with the residents of Rosewood when most white merchants refused. When African Americans were first started to be tortured or murdered, Mr. Wright was not as sensitive and only cared about his store. If an African American needed help, he would assist them if only they paid him. Later, Mr. Wright started to be concerned with the unjust actions occurring in Rosewood. He kept some people in hiding in his own house. He help plan an evacuation effort by taking families onto a train running away from the mob.

In conclusion, Mr. Wright went from being a selfish individual to a sympathetic man with nothing but good intentions. He was shown that he disagreed with the sheriff's dealings in finding the so-called attacker. Despite the fact that many African Americans were killed during the Rosewood massacre, he still aided a family and was able to run away.

Artists have always been inspired by myths and legends, and have the exceptional ability to transform them into visual form. Sometimes the art is the only surviving record that shows that a culture or civilization actually existed. Joseph Campbell considers artists mythmakers because they translate the true hidden meaning of the work into something that is believable and meaningful. He states that with the help of metaphors, a piece of art or literature can be elevated from a mythical experience to a cosmological status(Lord 4), which will then result in a feeling that will transcend time and transport us to bliss(Conf ). Campbell feels that you will never capture the full effect of the work of art, with simply a comprehensive explanation or brief summary of it. Metaphors have the power to transform and tie events to their real inner meaning. They take the ordinary interpretation of the story to the mythical sphere (inner area) where the real adventure takes place. A Metaphors main function is to bring these two realms together, and also help express the inexpressible. They give you that wow feeling, especially when you have finally seen the beauty the artist was trying to convey all along (Lord ,4)

The 16th century bronze sculpture of the dancing Ganesha is such a piece of art. It is now housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ganesha is one of the most popular Hindu deities, representing good luck, wisdom and fortune. Bronze sculptures originating from southern India were designed to be carried in a procession. This way the people could admire and view each deity one at a time. The sculptures were also created for one to experience what is known as darshanseeing the divine image, and for it to see you. The unknown artist created this sculpture made out of bronze, a copper alloy, and a no longer used wax technique where the object is made in wax first, then covered with clay. The object is then baked, which melts the wax away, and the clay then hardens and forms a mold. The mold is filled with melted bronze, cooled, and then taken off. The artist then creates the beautiful masterpiece by complimenting the details of the image (ArtsEdNet). The expressive sculpture shows the dancing Ganeshas gleeful personality, and gracefulness. The artist created a massive, and agile sculpture, which I imagine, was difficult to do. He successfully portrayed the important qualities of this deity in a way that made the special characteristics endure through time.

This piece of art was made in the Southwestern Indian State of Karnataka. The Ganesha is normally depicted with the body of a man, four arms, the head of an elephant, and having only one tusk-- the other tusk looks broken. Another unique feature of the deity, is its large belly, which practically hangs over his lower garments. On his chest he has a sacred thread that looks like a snake (ArtsEdNet). There are several different versions behind the myth of the Dancing Ganesha. The most popular one being, that Ganesha was created by the Goddess Parvati as a guardian to her privacy. The Goddess Parvati was upset that her husband never respected her privacy, especially the times when he would barge into her private chambers while she was bathing. To solve this problem, she decided to make a figure of a young boy out of sandalwood paste that was on her body, gave it life, and told the boy she was his mother, and to guard the entrance while she bathed. Her husband, Shiva (lord of destruction), came as usual to visit his wife, but found that the boy was blocking his way, and would not let him in. Shiva did not know this was his son, and fought with the boy. The boys head was cut off from his body, and when Parvati came back from her bath, she was so enraged at the sight before her, that she threatened to destroy the heavens and the earth. Her husband (Shiva) tried to calm her down, and told his followers to bring the head of the first creature they discovered. The first creature they found was an elephant. They cut off the head and put it on the boys body, and gave the boy life. The Goddess Parvati was once again happy (Bhartiyakala.com).

All of the physical attributes of the Ganesha have a great deal of symbology behind them. The Ganeshas four hands hold all his attributes and signify their divinity. His lower right hand, which is used as a weapon and his bowl of sweets, symbolize abundance. In his upper left hand he holds a bunch of mangoes, which represent fertility, and in his right hand he holds an ax, which destroys ignorance and any obstacles that come in his way. In this sculpture, the Ganesha is dancing on a lotus flower, which is a symbol of the universe and the pure heart of the devotee (ArtsEdNet). His round belly signifies that he swallows the misfortunes and heartaches of the universe, while at the same time protecting the world (Bhartiyakala.com) The Ganeshas dancing is symbolic of his playfulness and his childlike personality. These are all symbolic of good fortune.

People worship Ganesha before taking on a challenging task or project they need luck on such as writing a book, taking a journey, or building a house (ArtsEdNet).

I had to do a little poetry explication on the poem, so maybe it might help people think of their own ideas.

"Chicago" Carl Sandburg True to recent poetry, "Chicago" jumps out as an expression with detailed metaphors linked to the main idea of discussing one thing and referring it to another. In one of Sandburg's better bits, he uses classic devices such as metaphor, shown in the whole opening paragraph, as well as simile, "Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning as a savage pitted against the wilderness," (line 14). His personification of chicago as a young man so vibrant and ready to go out to the club seems as if Chicago is the place where he feels most happy and full of life himself. This common theme runs throughout the poem, where Sandburg's descriptions are not about people or a certain person but of Chicago, the city. Chicago, the bustling powerhouse which brings one all the necessities and then some. Meats, tools, bread, and iron, while keeping the climate interesting and the night life even more tempting. As a city, Chicago is not just any city, but THE city. But some do not care for Chicago and nonchalantly pawn off its duties as bland and that the city is poor. Sandburg just laughs, and through the obvious energy finishes the work arrogantly, as if one was to think that Chicago was anything less than the most wonderful place to be, just be reminded of what he offers the world.

You know, poetry can be hard to analyze, but this one isnt too bad, so take heart! You have to lead only a ten-minute discussion in class- heres what Id focus on. The poem begins with a definition, if you will, of Chicago itself. Look into the history (you can get this on the internet) of Chicago at the time Sandburg lived there, and for your introduction to the discussion, tell why exactly Sandburg uses these characteristics to describe Chicago. The poem talks then about how Chicago DOES have just as many horrible things as people say it has, but he seems to end his poem on a note of praise for Chicago. As a class, have the students discuss what Sandburg finds so praiseworthy about Chicago (beginning with Come and show me another city... Discuss WHY Sandburg thinks that Chicago has something to be proud of in its definition as Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, etc. (see the beginning and end of the poem). This should take you well beyond a ten-minute discussion. Good luck! I also have to lead a Sandburg discussion this week- 5 minutes worth. )

The word "regendering" not only suggest the enormous transformations in gender roles, division of labor, social institutions such as marriage and the family, and investigation of the self and psyche that emerge; but also the literature that was partly responsible for shaping such transformations and giving people a shared vocabulary with which to name this changes. While "sex" refers to the biological differences between the female sex and the male sex, "gender" is a cultural term, a name for the ways that culture constructs genders as identities, and how those identities are then organized. It is of the human notion of what had been taken as a "natural" difference between the sexes with women as weaker, more irrational, less intellectual, more virtuous, lacking in sexual desire, designed by nature for maturity, incapable of leadership and most public professions came to be understood as the construction of gender, a state of affairs that was not innate, reinforced by culture; having made gender, it is believe that culture could also remake it. Having read Orlando and Mannequin, a great piece of work written by Virginia Woolf and Jean Ryhs. One could trace the origin of regendering and modernism of women issues as well as gender issues to this present day society. These writers have demonstrated great concern toward "sex" and the treatment of women around the world. I hope to use these two selections in making my critical analysis about the concern of these writers and also the problem they seem to be addressing and then make a final conclusion on the solution each of them present if any.

Firstly, they are all concern about the "sexes" and sex refers to the biological differences between the male sex and the female sex. Virginia Woolf gives a more elaborate detail about the gender politics because it was becoming something else in Orlando. Orlando was about the biography of a person who would not neatly die within one historical age, who would not produce documented accomplishment and about someone who would not conform to the sanctity of sexual identity. Her most concern was invalidating the assumption of her father's time, that gender identity is fixed, and that only great men create history, that literature is the work of the male genius, and that sexual desire, failure, and silence are to be feared. She used the story of Orlando to demonstrate the fact that there is really not much difference between a male and a female except for the clothes we wear which make a unique distinction between two sexes. She also said that clothes are but a symbol of something hid the deep beneath it, and had they both worn the same clothes, it is possible that the outlook might have been the same. She added that it is a change in the human mind that dictate our choice of dress and sex although this does not make a lot of sense reading between lines, but when looked beyond it ordinary meaning, one could see that it does make sense because both sexes possesses similar character and intellect regardless of what circumstances they might be facing. Virginia stated that the difference between sexes are intermix because they possess the same power to alter their gender by simply changing their way dressing and thinking looking at what happen to the main character in Orlando. Every human vacillation from one sex to the other takes place and often it is only clothes that keep the male or female likeness while underneath the sex is the very opposite of what it is above. After reading Orlando, I notice that her main point of view concerning sex is that there is little or no difference between a male or a female species because male and female characteristic are alike although we differ from when it comes to our precision about things such as emotions.

Secondly, both writers talk about the treatment and respect for women in the labor sector of the any economy. Virginia Woolf did not write much about the treatment and respect for women but she stood for equal treatment of all the human species. Jean Rhys had a lot to say about what she felt about the treatment of women as commodity. Her writing Mannequin was her way of expressing her inner most feelings about the treatment of women when it came to exploitation of women as goods bought and then resold for profit. Mannequin talks about the destitution of a young beautiful lady who went through a tough time after the death of her father. She left her home country for a better life abroad. To this dizzying sense of homelessness and alienation from place Rhys main concern was the trenchant consideration of the effect of displacement on women whose voices are silenced and to whom cultural authority was seldom granted. In her book Mannequin, it voices precisely the vertigo experienced by a young lady name Ann. She was thrown out into the world to make her way as a fashion model, experiencing the coldness of Europe after the rich friendship of her Caribbean home, feeling the disdain of the British for her outsider status, and suffering exploitation by the men and women who treat her like commodity that is a piece of beauty property to be bought and then sold back.

Conclusively, they all seem to be addressing the same problem although from different perspectives but still with the same common goal which is disregarding sex and treating everybody the same be you male or female, that we all deserve equal treatment and fairness. As for specific solutions to this problem, none of these writers wrote something about it.Cheap University Papers on Regrendering of Sexes and Equal Treatment
