Rosewood

The movie, Rosewood, takes place in Florida consisting of an African American community, where many own property and businesses. Mr. Wright, the only white man to own a business in Rosewood, plans to expand his business and purchasing more land. Although he has an affair with one of his African American employees, he still feels some racism. On New Year's Eve, a mysterious man comes to town, named Mr. Mann. He stays with Sylvester Carrier and his family, deciding whether or not he wants to stay permanently.

Soon, a great amount of anxiety between Rosewood, and the neighboring white town Sumner arises with many racial disputes to come. A young woman named Fannie, from the white town Sumner, falsely claims that she has been attacked by an African-American stranger. In doing so, she was really covering for her adulterous affair with an abusive white man. The town sought out to find the attacker, who was suspected to be an African-American convict by the name Jesse Hunter. Sara Carrier, Sylvester's mother, witnesses that Fannie was indeed not attacked by an African American. The local sheriff, who disbelieves that Fannie was attacked by an African American, still goes on searching in an ineffective and ruthless attempt to catch the "attacker."Order College Papers on Rosewood

The mob starts to get out of hand, leading to the death of many Rosewood residents. Some African-American women and children escaped into the woods. Mr. Mann, after escaping from being lynched, takes the Sylvester's family to a train, with the help of Mr. Wright, fleeing from the sheriff and his mob. It has been said that no one really knows how many African Americans were killed during this Rosewood massacre.

Out of all the roles in the movie, Mr. Wright changed from the beginning of the film to the very end. He started out having his racial moments, although he was having an affair with one of his African American employees. He earned trust with the residents of Rosewood when most white merchants refused. When African Americans were first started to be tortured or murdered, Mr. Wright was not as sensitive and only cared about his store. If an African American needed help, he would assist them if only they paid him. Later, Mr. Wright started to be concerned with the unjust actions occurring in Rosewood. He kept some people in hiding in his own house. He help plan an evacuation effort by taking families onto a train running away from the mob.

In conclusion, Mr. Wright went from being a selfish individual to a sympathetic man with nothing but good intentions. He was shown that he disagreed with the sheriff's dealings in finding the so-called attacker. Despite the fact that many African Americans were killed during the Rosewood massacre, he still aided a family and was able to run away.
