Hitler's rise to power was not completely the consequence of the economic problems left by the Depression in Germany. Although there are a few economic factors that led to the rise of Hitler, such as the impact that the Depression had on employment, and the availability of money. As well as this there were other factors that assisted Hitler in his rise to power, such as his speaking skills, propaganda, and the way that Hitler's opponents underestimated him.

To a small extent, economic factors were responsible for Hitler's rise to power. The Depression left an incredibly detrimental affect on Germany. Unemployment rose from .5 million to 6 million in 1, and with little financial assistance from the government, German workers were extremely upset. As employers could not afford to pay their staff, they fired three quarters of their workforce, and then lowered the wages of their existing workers. Banks were also highly affected by the Depression. In 11, 5 major banks were closed down. Money was extremely scarce, and the smallest things cost incredible amounts of money. As people were upset with the situation that they were in, and blamed the Weimar Republic for it, the German population were easily influenced and were happy to believe the appealing promises that Hitler presented them with. This is evident in the rise of votes, whereby from 1 to 1, the Nazi Party gained over million votes.

As well as economic problems, Hitler's speaking skills were also important in his rise to power. Hitler was an extremely charismatic man, and was easily able to evoke people's emotions. Many listeners were simply awestruck whenever they had the chance to listen to him. He could closely identify with people's emotions and expectations of the government, and thus could influence their decisions and make them believe that whatever he promised them would ultimately come true. Hitler's incredible speaking style, personal qualities, and charisma made the Nazi Party seem extremely appealing. It is apparent that Hitler's incredible speaking skills made people more likely to believe the promises that he was making, as he would capture their attention and tell the people what they wanted to hear he would be able to immediately solve the economic problems that Germany was in.

In addition to Hitler's speaking skills, the propaganda that the Nazi Party created was equally prominent in Hitler's rise to power. The Sturmabteilung, who were Hitler's personal army, distributed leaflets to the community, containing persuasive information which was usually highly inaccurate, and which evoked people's emotions and contrarily, used scare tactics and intimidation. This propaganda influenced people's decisions dramatically, as people were willing to believe what Hitler and his troops would tell them. The German public were saturated with symbols of Nazi worship. Posters were displayed everywhere, and almost every street was decorated with the Nazi flag, the Swastika. Josef Goebbels was the man that was in charge of Propaganda. He made the propaganda appeal to people's emotions "German mothers Do you want your daughters to be playthings and the objects of sexual lust?" This evoked people's emotions and made them want to rid Germany of people who were doing this, therefore they voted for Hitler. The German people believed that the Nazi Party would save them from the Communist threats that Germany was facing. Hitler also believed that a mass of voters would believe a great lie, rather than a small one.Custom writing service can write essays on The Rise Of Hitler

Furthermore, the fact that Hitler's political opponents highly underestimated him also contributed to the rise of Hitler. With the general population fearing that Communism would take over, citizens were heartened by the Nazi's stance of anti communism. In 1, the Nazi's were by then, the largest party in the Reichstag. The party had 0 out of 608 seats. In spite of this, in November 1, they lost around 4 seats. This led to Hitler contemplating suicide. In 1, the German government were afraid that Hitler and the Nazi Party would try and seize control of Germany. On January 0, 1, Franz von Papen, General Schleicher, and President Hindenburg appointed Hitler as Chancellor. They believed that if they gave him what he wanted, they would have Hitler under their thumb, and would be able to influence the rest of the Nazi voters presiding in the Reichstag. Through the faults of von Papen, Schleicher, and Hindenburg, Hitler came to power legally, through democracy. As soon as he was given the position of Chancellor, he passed the "Enabling Act", which enabled him to make laws for the next four years without consulting the Reichstag. This can also be linked to the economic crises, as if there was not an economic crisis, the Weimar Republic's inadequacies would not have been so apparent, and people would not have been so upset with the Government. There would not have been the rise of the Nazi Party support, and therefore Hitler would not have been considered for the position of Chancellor

Considering all factors, it was to a small extent that the economic problems in Germany led to the rise of Hitler. Through his speaking skills, use of influential propaganda and the underestimation of him by his political opponents, was Hitler unfortunately able to come to power.

So let me get this straight. Our new foreign policy should be one of the worlds isolationist policeman. You quote Mike Savages philosophy of border, language, culture which, I think you (or anyone) could agree is about as isolationist as one can get. On the other hand we support the factual evidence of the Iraqi/al queda threat presented by Sec. Powell today at the UN. Threat to who? Our border, language, and culture? Do we really feel threatened by Iraq? I dont. In my opinion, they are more dangerous to our position without a direct threat. This problem woud be easy with a smoking gun. There is no smoking gun. In fact, these are the exact words of the administration.

Unfortunately, the Bush administration has maeauvered themselves into a position where the war is inevitable. The war will come and we will win.

A war with Iraq is justified but NOT if you embrace the Savage philosophy of border, language, and culture. If we are the worlds policeman, lets say so, as the Romans did 500 years ago. If not, lets heed the advice of those outdated Founding Fathers, to avoid foreign entanglements.

My policy is thisCustom Essays on War With Iraq

(1) Iraq is NOT a direct threat to the US.

() If the US is attacked or directly threatened by Iraq, lets kick their ass.

() If the US is not attacked or directly threatened by Iraq, whats the big deal?

The problem now is, as mentioned above, that if we dont go to war we will be seen as lacking resolve. So the war will come. It will be a lop-sided military victory. Thats the easy part.

The connection to terrorism argument is a good one but in my mind it applies most to Saudi Arabia. There is tons of solid evidence to this effect. Indisputable evidence. That country eventually will be proven to be the biggest enemy of the United States. The majority of money and support for the /11 terrorists came from that nation. The majority of money and support for Osama bi ladin (and every other anti-American terrorist organization in the world) comes from that country. This is an indisputable fact. The administration has acknowldged it. Previous administrations has acknowloged it. Saudi Arabia is the heart and birthplace of Islam and the most fundementalist Muslim country in the world. Because they allow our military on their soil we kiss their ass. Its a humuliating insult to our country. If its about oil lets say it. If its not lets put them to the test. They are either for us or against us. When are they gonna prove it? If were gonna go it alone lets do it. Drop SA. Lets see who they run to. The fundementalists or the west? If were going settle things over there lets draw a line in the sand. Those Saudi assholes are the biggest problem in the region.

Were in a great position now. If we can just resist rushing into war without appearing pensive we will win the big victory in the long run. If you dont think public and world opinion is important during military action just remember Viet Nam.

The Wax

Even after his Cogito argument, Descartes is still unsure of the clarity of his knowledge. The external world, it seems to him, still seems more distinct and real than the percepetion that he exists.

As an experiment, Descartes takes a piece of wax and examines it its smell, texture, shape, colour - all these seem to Descartes to embody the distinct qualities that we associate with wax. However, subjecting it to the heat of the fire, the wax melts before his eyes, leaving him to ask What, then, was it I knew with so much distinctness in the piece of wax?

The second Meditation continues Descartes search for one thing he can be certain of - even if it turns out to be merely that he cannot be certain of anything.Order custom research paper on Descartes' Wax Example

Firstly, having dismissed sense experience as providing unreliable information, he turns inwards towards the mind itself in search of certainty.

Who produces these thoughts in his mind? Could it be God who does so? But then again, it might only be Descartes himself. Might the malignant demon be deceiving him by placing these perceptions in his mind?

It is here that Descartes arrives at his most famous argument, called the Cogito (after the Latin phrase cogito ergo sum, I think therefore I am). Descartes argues that, even if he is deceived, it must be true that he exists in order to be deceived.

But what exists? Descartes then begins the process of investigating what it is that he can rightly claim to be, rejecting in turn the idea of the body, or a spirit like wind or fire spread throughout his body, until finally arriving at the notion of a thinking thing.

Lastly, Descartes compares his new-found knowledge with the apparent clarity of the existence of external objects (which at first seem more clear). However, on examining such a thing as a piece of wax he finds that everything which he thought he knew about it - its shape, texture, smell, etc. - are in reality illusions. Furthermore, he is convinced that the intellect is the thing that is resposible for all knowledge about the world, and is itself most clearly known.

Descartes argument here is that the melted wax - although apparently the same thing as the solid piece - retains almost none of the qualities which he considered as defining it. Furthermore, he argues, the wax seems capable of other changes - of shape, volume, etc. - which would make it still more alien to its original state. It seems then that the wax, and by comparision all other physical things, are in reality nothing.

The only thing which gives physical objects reality, according to Descartes, is the understanding that the mind has of them. So, the wax as perceived by the senses is unreal, changing; but the wax as understood by the intellect abides by certain laws, changes according to certain conditions and can be understood through scientific experiment.

As an individual living in the era of rapid development of technology, I believe that technology facilitates people¡¯s life and creates more comfort in people¡¯s life.

The advancement of technology has remarkably improved the quality of life. In contemporary history, every appearance of a new technology has improved the social advancement, enhancing the quality of life. The invention of the car and the plane made it possible for people to travel far away from their home for vacation and business. The updated technology to cars and planes makes people¡¯s travel more comfortable and safe. People can take advantage of the big ship for a cruise and the ship provides people with the products of all over the world. The appearance of the electricity brought people to a completely new world. The domestic appliances help people economize time on homework so that people have more time for relaxation. The TV and Internet provide people the entertainment as well as the information. The people benefited a lot from the development in medicine. A lot of incurable diseases become no more deadly. The average of people¡¯s life now increases a lot than before.

The technology is also stimulant to the economic prosperity. Economic prosperity contributes to create more employment opportunity in job market. The increase in employment opportunity can help resolve the social problems, such as violence, drug, poverty, etc. These social problems are main factors undermining the quality of people¡¯s life. The violence makes people worried about their safety. The poverty can only give people misery, never mind the quality of life. Only can a rich and developed society guarantee the quality of peoples¡¯ life. It is impossible for us to expect a high quality of life in a poor society with low productivity and undeveloped technology.

Although the technology creates some problems threatening the quality of peoples¡¯ life, these problems will not be a threat any longer if we use the technology well. Meanwhile, I believe the threat or the damage will be overcome following the further technological development. Help with essay on Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life.

Theres a place I like to call my own where I constantly reflect upon the fond memories of my childhood. Those days of sitting in the golden sand, with the hot sun beaming down on my little bonnet and pale helpless skin. The feeling of the cool ocean water rushing over my toes, as it would come in and snatch away my poor excuse of a sandcastle that had given me a sense of relief, but also a waste of time at the same moment. And then to feel the snug loving arms that held me close with the towel warming my body, as I sit eating a gooey peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

As years pass by, I still feel an undying love for my special place. Although a different kind of love, it is there within me something I will never lose. Running away from my fears, I run the shoreline, with my well-manicured bare feet slapping loudly in the small pools of clean, turquoise water. I feel the wet, rough sand stick between my toes and the crisp breeze of fresh air blow refreshingly against my face. As I sit on the smooth, silken rocks, I watch the fierce waves crash upon the cliff beside me. I smell the salt of the sea below and just watch the blue water as it shares with us its many creatures it has lying beneath its deep, mysterious surface. I see a school of black finned whales circling together as families do. Then I spot the exquisite dolphins just leaping in the air as if they have the strength to reach for the stars with their smooth, shiny silver bodies and stunning features.

I watch now as my children chase each other around. The two older ones splash each other and cover each others bodies with the ravishing sand. The joy in their sparkling eyes is just so phenomenal, as the little one with her sun hat on and her diaper filled with sand tries for the fifth time to get her pitiful castle to stand up tall and free. Without the sneaking ocean swiping it away yet another time and eating it up, but down it goes so quickly and washed away. Tears filled the baby girls eyes as her continuous yearn for accomplishment has faded. I hold her close and sooth her, for her young mind cannot yet appreciate the real beauties of my favorite place. I sit her back, and together we lift the bucket revealing the tilted yet splendid castle. We sit there just watching as I see her face light up and smile ear to ear. Soon I feel the slight, cool breeze, which sends shivers down my spine. The bright, yellow rays of the sun is setting now, as I watch the last penetration of light glisten over the blanket of blue. We gather our belongings and together we head home. And still I wonder to this day of this place that has been passed down from generation to generation. Will my children carry the tradition? Will they allow this significant place to be such a treasure, as it was for me? For when I can no longer visit, it can be a place for them. A place they too can call their own someday.

In ancient times, laws were usually passed along by words, it was never written down. But around 1760 B.C., a man named Hammurabi, King of Babylon, produced what is believed to be the first set of codified laws in Western civilization. They were chiseled on a stone tablet and hung in the center of the city where everyone could see them. In 1750 there was not very much respect for authority and I believe it has improved since then.

I believe over the centuries the respect for authority has drastically changed. I think the reason it has improved since 1750 is because back then they had laws but the laws were for everyone and everything. What I'm trying to say is today we have laws but we have different kinds of laws and authorities, they only had one. We have the provincial government and the municipal government, they have different kinds of responsibilities and we respect them for what each type of government does for us. Also we have different sections of government for us, like substantive law, and procedural law. These are different types of the law which deal with different things. Today we have private and civil law which deals with us, the people of the country, and on the other side we have public law which deals with the relationship of the government and society. What I'm really trying to express is that back in 1750 they did not have different sections of the laws for certain things and people, they had one big law and sometimes the punishments were blown out of context. A good example of this is in one of the excerpts where a witness lies on the stand during a capital trial, and because he lied and it was a capital trial the man will receive the death penalty. Back then they only had one way to decide these punishments, "an eye for an eye", and sometimes this way was unorthodox. The people lost respect for the government and started to overcome with fear. Today we have different kinds of authorities; we also have different kinds of courts such as divorce court, family court, criminal court, etc... I believe because we have all these different kinds the people are happier and respect the government for implementing this kind of system. People even have more respect for smaller levels of authority. Good examples are police officers, a while back they used to be seen as "Pigs" who go to Tim Horton's to eat donuts and drink coffee. But now I can honestly say people respect them a whole lot more and do not make jokes about them and finally realize that the little things they do greatly improve our society.

So yes, I believe the respect for authority has immensely improved since 1750 and will continue to improve as time goes on. And even though there is more respect for authority now, the respect for authority was quite impressive for its time, who would have thought that a civilization over thousands of years old would be capable for producing the worlds very first set of codified laws.

Robes loosely flowing, hair as free

Such sweet neglect more takes me

Than all the adulteries of art

They strike mine eyes, but not my heartCustom Essays on There should be no uniform at school

Respected teachers and my dear fellow students!

Today the topic that has been given to me is that there should be no uniform in school. I would like to speak in its favor.

Imagine for a moment that there are two gardens. In one garden only one color and one kind of flowers are growing, while in the other different kinds of multicolored flowers are growing. Which will attract and fascinate your eyes? Certainly the second one in which versatile and multicolored flowers are displayed. Same is the case of uniform in schools.

I don't think that uniform has got anything to do with the quality and standard of education. Many great scholars, artists, scientists, philosophers and mathematicians have been born in the past. Uniforms played no role in their achievements.

Uniformity always creates boredom as Cooper said

Variety is the very spice of life

That gives it all its flavor

We can't eat one kind of food everyday. History is witness that the followers of Moses refused to take the monotonous type of food called 'Mann-O-Salva' although it was delivered directly from the Heavens. In the same way we become sick of wearing the same poor uniform every morning for almost as many as twelve years.

Dear audience!

It is quite unnatural that all the students are wearing the dress of one color and one kind, without caring whether they like that dress or not. We start hating the color that we are compelled to wear for such a long time. If the students are allowed to go to school dressed according to their own choice, certainly it would have a positive impact on their education. They would go to school more willingly and more excitedly while wearing their colorful dresses.

I also think that uniform is a great cause of absence from the school. Sometimes we don't find our uniforms ready. Sometimes we can't wash or press it because of power breaks. As a result we are forced to be absent from the school which is a great loss of our studies.

Respected President, it is said that dress is reflection of personality. So if the students are allowed to dress according to their choice, the teachers can easily know their aptitudes and categorize them into various groups. Uniforms are also very expensive and many parents would feel relieved if they don't have to afford uniforms along with school books, exercise books, stationery and school fees. I feel that uniform is the most unnecessary item in this list.

In the end I request to the principal that if my reasons are logical and impressive, then we may be allowed to come to school in our stylish and colorful dresses on next Monday.

Thank you.

For thousands and thousands of years now, people have watched the moon and stars in the night sky. Galileo Galilei was one of these people. He confirmed that the Earth and other planets revolved around the sun. This brings up a question with a universe as large as the one we currently live in today, is it possible that there are other life forms also living with us? No one knows for sure whether or not life exists outside planet earth today.

Mankind has not yet explored every single inch of space amongst us. There may be other planets around stars which may also have planets capable of supporting life, like earth is like to the sun. Until people can explore such areas, people will have no definitive idea whether or not life really does exist outside our planet.

The main question is that should we believe that there are other life forms in the universe, or do we need to believe that there are. In the world we live in today, there are many unexplained phenomenon that occur. Some people believe that this unnatural phenomenon could be the result of extraterrestrials (ET) or life from outer space. There are many different phenomenons in which people believe may be related to extraterrestrials, such as unidentified flying objects (UFO's), alien sightings, alien abductions and crop circles. However, these phenomenons, until proved, may or may not actually be a result of extraterrestrials.

The article summarized came from www.msnbc.com and references the subject of "Business Accounting" that was covered in chapter 17 of the textbook. This story is a re-cap of "Corporate America's" biggest scam artists and talks about the 1 largest scandals in business, referring to them as "The Dirty Dozen". The article references a video that is being put out by CNBC and describes in detail many of the white collared criminals from as far back as the 10s. Accounting scams in the United States have a very long history. Some of the worst scandals in the United States include companies such as Enron, WorldCom, and Tyco. These companies have left investors and working Americans distraught at the way executives do their jobs. Governance reforms like the Sarbanes-Oxley law have helped soothe the pain a bit, but now being one year after the bill's passage, it's worth remembering that there were problems with accounting scandals way before Enron and the others. The 180s, for example, had more than its share of infamous moments and headlines in the news. Most of the illegal operations of companies come to a head when either the accused is sentenced to a prison sentence or they take their own lives before the faults are found. Still, scandals are happening and may never be exposed before they affect more than just themselves.

KEY PROVISIONS OF THE SARBANES-OXLEY LAW

Created the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to oversee and investigate auditors, including setting auditing standards, with various disciplinary powers for rules or professional-standards violations. Unlike the previous self-regulatory body, it has a guaranteed source of funding.

Gave enhanced authority to corporate audit committees, including mandatory pre-approval of many activities. Committees may have only independent directors.

The Spanish Inquisition

The Spanish Inquisition represents one of the darkest periods of terror and bloodshed that our world has ever seen. Many scholars have tried to explain the reasoning behind the implementation of the Inquisition and none can produce a definitive answer. Most suggest that the Spanish Inquisition, like all other inquisitions before it was implemented for the sole purpose of eliminating deviation from the Catholic faith. The purpose of this essay is to show that this is certainly not the main purpose for its use, but rather, that the Inquisition had more sinister racial, political, social and economic motives behind it.

The origins of the Inquisition is a question that has been asked by many historians. The most accepted theory is that during 11 ce - 141 ce, in Spain, strong feelings of anti-semitism (hatred of Jews) existed in Europe. In these years, many Jews were killed and Jewish people were ultimately forced to convert to Catholicism to avoid persecution . These Jews became know as New Christians or conversos. Over the years the conversos became powerful, held influencial positions and married their sons and daughters to Spanish nobles. It was thought that these conversos, because they were forced to convert, were secretly practicing Judaism and teaching it to their children. When the Spanish Crown realized that these conversos were tainting the Spanish nobility's bloodline, they asked Pope Sixtus IV in 1478 to sanction the use of the Inquisition in Spain to root out the heretics and purify them before God.

This view of the origins of the Inquisition was widely accepted, until the turn of the 18th century, when modern methods of viewing history replaced it with another theory. This theory included many details, which contradicted the old explanation. They found that, unlike all the other inquisitions, the Spanish Inquisition was ruled more by King Ferdinand, and not the Pope . The King was given more papal powers, such as appointing inquisitors and cardinals. He rejected the Pope's condemnation of the excessive persecutions and he used the confiscated income from the Inquisition for his own needs, rather than the needs of the Catholic Church. "Thus they concluded that the Spanish Inquisition was a royal rather than a papal Inquisition, that its real aims were secular rather than religious, and that it was actually introduced to finance the King's ventures and promote his absolute power." This theory was, however regected by historians as it failed to explain why King Ferdinand would dream up a plan so needlessly complicated to promote his power in government.

In 144, novelist and historian Benzion Netanyahu found documents that discredited the above view of the Inquisition. The documents he discovered showed that around the year 1460 ce, many of the conversos were actually practicing Christians and intended to teach their children Catholic values, not secretly practicing Judaism as many thought . The number of Christian conversos was rising from generation to generation and the number of Jews was rapidly decreasing to the vanishing point. In 1481 when the Inquisition began, the Jews represented only a small minority at the time. What would be the reason to implement force to eliminate something that was being naturally eliminated in only a matter of time? The establishment of the motives of the conversos is difficult because it involves finding some documentation from the period that was free from the Inquisition's influence. Only after finding these answers could a definitive conclusion about the origins of the Inquisition be reached. Jewish sources from 1481 were free from the Inquisition's threats. These books establish that the conversos were regarded by Jewish authorities as renegades and traitors to their religion. If the conversos really were practicing their religion secretly, the writers would have written that this was the case. Although some writers indicated this to be the case, as their works progressed, they described them as traitors because in the Jewish writers' minds this was what they were. Old Christian writings from the time also state that most old Christians accepted the conversos and genuinely believed in their conversion. If the reason for the implementation of the Inquisition does not prove to be religious, then I believe that the reasons behind it are seeded in political and social reasons.

Given that the facts seriously question the religious motives for the inquisition, we must look at the social and economic reasons that would explain the Inquisition's use. At the turn of the 1th century, tensions between old Christians and conversos grew to an unprecedented level . Old Christians were jealous of the success the conversos were having and the amount of the country's wealth they possessed. Conversos held positions of importence and high social standing such as clerical and even royal positions. Conversos commonly worked as royal treasurers and were more often accused of economic crimes rather than religious ones .

The first extreme example of tensions between old and new Christians came in 144 ce in the town of Toledo when they passed the Sentencia-Estatuto which barred all conversos from holding current and future public office. By the 15th century, conversos made up 1/ of the entire population of Castile. Since conversos were not allowed to hold public office, they were forced to work in private practice such as law or medicine. The old-Christians felt that they were stealing their jobs in law and medicine, so the government passed a bill that changed the sentencia-Estatuto from not only barring conversos from public office, but private office also. All this lead to stiff opposition from the conversos and skirmishes broke out between conversos and old-Christians. The Spanish Crown needed a way to appease the old-Christians and make sure civil war did not occur, which no doubt would have been very costly to the Crown. Even though there is evidence of extreme tensions between old-Christians and conversos, there is not enough evidence to draw conclusions as to why the Spanish Crown would step in and use such drastic measures to calm what was nothing more than a petty rivalry between the two groups.

This brings us to our final topic area, where we explore the racial reasons for the Inquisition. The racial reasons for the Inquisition seem to be more compelling than any other reasons. One of the first theories about the rise of racism in Spain came from the Spanish scholar Americo Castro. His theory was that Spanish racism actually stemmed from the Jewish treating the Spanish as inferior because they believed they were God's chosen. In response, the Spanish simply reversed these feelings . This theory has been seriously doubted because Jewish writings from the period do not describe the Jewish people as superior to the Spanish. In 147 , a letter adressed to Pope Eugene IV from conversos in Spain, claimed that the old-Christians were refusing to establish congugal ties with them based on the presumption they were inferior. It appears obvious now that the Spanish felt the Jewish were inferior but we must ask the question why did they feel the Jewish were inferior? And what led to them thinking this way?

In the 14th and 15th century, there were groups of writers who wrote "atrocity propangda", which meant they wrote about horrible things and acts that the Jews were alleged to be doing. As a result, the general public reading this would condemn the Jews and the writers would gain support for their campaign. There were three racist theories that the writers used to gather support for the cause. The first was that all the conversos were conspiring to overtake the government of Spain. The second was that the conversos were polluting the Spanish bloodlines. The third was that the only way to deal with these dangers was to use a genocidal solution like the Inquisition. The Spanish racist attitude towards the Jews came from historical rivalries between Christians and Jews and regardless of whether or not they genuinely practiced it, the Spanish still saw them as Jews.

With all of this information, we can draw some conclusions and begin to identify explanations as to why the Inquisition was deemed necessary. When the Jews became conversos, the job market was opened up to them. Previously Jews, were only fit to do two jobs (money lending and tax farming). When they became conversos, they could hold jobs in trade and other professions. The old-Christians felt they were being muscled out of jobs they deserved and that their everyday lives were being threatened by the presence of the conversos. Politically, the old-Christians had successfully banned Jews from office and royal positions, but these laws did not yet apply to the conversos and the number of conversos who had government positions was rapidly increasing. With these positions, the conversos attained a higher social standing. Political leaders such as King Juan II opted to appoint new-Christians to administrative duties because he trusted them more that the old-Christians, in whom he had little faith . Many old- Christians believed that if the Crown had its way, all old- Christians would be under the authority of new Christians. This obviously raised opposition to the social position of conversos in everyday Spanish life. After the rebellion in Toledo in 144, anti-conversos feelings spread throughout Spain. It was theorized that the Jews were so evil and immoral by nature that it would be impossible for them to convert to Christianity, which was seen to be the most moral religion.

The old-Christians saw that the conversos were rapidly gaining power in every aspect of their society and that something had to be done to stop them before they completely took over. However, they remained protected from persecution as long as they were Catholic. The old- Christians used the claim that some conversos still secretly practiced the Jewish faith to rally public support for their cause. There is significant evidence indicating that the Inquisition could not have been launched without this claim.

As this essay suggests, there have been many different reasons and explanations for the use of the Spanish Inquisition. It seems that the Spanish Inquisition was motivated more by greed and hate than anything else. My research should not be taken as the final word on this subject, I have attempted to highlight some important writings that explain a summary of some facts I have found during my research of the real reasons behind the use of the Inquisition. As I stated at the beginning of my essay, the Inquisition is a very fascinating period in history. The readings that were part of my research have given me a good appreciation of this difficult and troubling period. I would strongly recommend you to take a look at them before you make up your mind regarding this sometimes touchy, but always interesting topic.

Madame Bovary, written by Gustave Flaubert was considered very controversial when it was first published. The novel was actually tried in a court of justice for obscenity, because it was alleged to be concerned with adultery and contains situations and allusions that shocked the prudish philistine government of Napoleon III. It was cited for offenses against morality and religion. Fortunately, Flaubert won his case and Madame Bovary remains to this day one of the masterpieces of French and world literature. It still holds up fairly well today. The psychological descriptions are so well depicted that they transport the readers to the characters most inner psyche. An analysis can be made of the two most important roles composing this novel Emma and Charles.

Emma Bovary

One may say that Emma Bovary is one of the most interesting women characters of world literature. One of the major challenges of Madame Bovary is to figure out what leads to her self-destruction. She does not cherish what she possesses, but laments what happiness her world does not give her. Hers is a story of spiritual emptiness and foolish idealism. ...Emma tried to find out what one meant exactly in life by the words bliss, passion, ecstasy, that had seemed to her so beautiful in books. She searches for what is found in the fantasy world of books in her own world and falls short of her expectations. Charles, her husband, she takes for granted, as She would have done so to the logs in the fireplace or to the pendulum of the clock.

Growing up on an isolated farm with few friends, Emma began life as a lonely child. Then, upon entering the Catholic convent school, she was completely shut off from the external world and turned inward for excitement. During this time, she read dozens of romance novels and formed an image of the perfect lover, who would be strong, handsome, athletic, and artistic. Despite her fantasies of this ideal lover, Emma would be happy only in her dreams. Her pleasure lay in the dreaming, not in the reality of having a lover. Maybe one of Flauberts reasons for creating Emma Bovary is to show the wreckage that such dreams can bring when the person tries to impose these dreams on reality. When a character like Emma despises the life around her and tries to live her life as she fantasizes it should be, the process can destroy both her and her family. At the end of the novel, not only do Emma and Charles die, but their daughter is condemned to a life in the factories.

Some say that, in Emma, Flaubert is allegorizing his own disappointments from life. From his biography one can learn that he was frustrated with society, and maybe he had had it with how narrow-minded people were. In Madame Bovary, Emma is portrayed as extrordinarily selfish, greedy, and foolishly romantic. Flaubert had to have known how ridiculous and ignorant Emma acted in the novel, but perhaps his own feelings mirrored her childish portrayal. In other words, Flaubert had the same feelings but he was aware of their immaturity. This was his only outlet to express his feelings. So, in his sometimes-immature attitude and portrayal of Emma, he was mirroring his own inner demons.

Emma has never been really honest with herself. She knows she was being untruthful and adulterous to her husband, but she never acknowledges or understands that she is dishonest with herself. Emma never holds an inner dialog or indulges in any self-reflection other than that of thinking of ways to satisfy her passionate longings. Emma never acknowledges her lack of maternal feelings for her daughter, Berthe. Berthe is only a non-significant character in Emmas life. She very seldom even thought of the child. Emma never acknowledges what she is doing and stops to consider the consequences of her actions when she keeps borrowing money from Monsieur Lheureux, the proprietor of the local dry-goods store.

The tragedy of her actions is that Emma, if she had had any self-reflection, if she had once tried to think things out, if she had once tried to really communicate with her husband on a level other than just despise and get frustrated by his unperceptive personality, if she had ever been honest with herself or had conceded that her whole life was based on pleasing herself and abusing everyone else in her life, if she had just once, thought of anyone other than herself. Emma would have had a chance at redemption, a chance to mature, a chance to become the wife that Charles thought he had married.

Charles Bovary

Charles is portrayed as a dull country doctor, who is vulgar, primitive, and almost entirely without passion. At the beginning of the novel, Charles is a schoolboy too timid to assert himself. Its only with the greatest effort that hes able to pass his medical college exams. After graduation, his mother secures a job for him in Tostes, then arranges his marriage. He has no idea what he wants to do in his life and would just have his mother make all his decisions for him. His marriage enables him to cut loose from his mother, and everything that happens to Charles from this point on results from his decision to marry Emma. Soon after their marriage, Emma sees him as a burden. However, Charles is a faithful, loving, and forgiving man whose devotion to Emma is a sign of strength. His honesty and hard work also stand out among the number of unscrupulous characters that people Yonville.

Charles is a product of the way he was raised. He saw the way his father mistreated and ignored his mother and wanted something better for his wife. Maybe he believes that the way to do this is to bend to her every whim when she asks, which proved to be his downfall. His love for Emma, and the desire to make her happy blind Charles. All he wants after his first marriage is the chance to be happy and to lead a normal life with the woman he loves. The only way he could do this is to do anything he could to appease her. He assumes that he can trust the woman he married, which unfortunately gives her the power to ruin him financially and which brings about the end where they enter the situation that kills both of them respectively.

Charles relationship with Emma is truly a tragedy. Charles loves Emma so completely that he is completely blinded to her faults and to the fact that she is totally dissatisfied with him as a man, a husband, and a lover. Charles is infatuated with Emma and, in typical bourgeois style, sees her as a possession. But he has no curiosity about whats going on beneath the surface, what shes thinking and feeling, and whether shes truly happy. Its true that Charles is a loving and devoting husband, but Emma never understands the depth of his devotion, the purity of his feelings for her, or the pleasure that just the sight of her brought him. Not until Emma lies dying does she realize what a treasure she has neglected to mine in Charless love. One can tell so from the passage below

God! she cried. Its horrible! He [Charles] flung himself on his knees beside her bed. Speak to me! What did you eat? Answer, for heavens sake! And in his eyes she read a love such as she had never known. What a tragedy and an irony! Her approaching death gave Emma a clarity of mind she has never had, and Charless love is suddenly evident to her at a time when she can no longer react to it. At long last, Emma realizes that she has been looking for love in all the wrong places.

Leon Dupuis/ Roldolphe Boulanger

Leon, a law clerk in a notarys office, meets Emma on her first night in Yonville. He is certainly physically superior to Charles, with ideas that are somewhat fresher. Drawn together by their common interest in music, art, and fashion, he and Emma fall in love. Though Leon is too passive and inexperienced to seduce her physically- and Emma isnt ready for an affair- he does seduce her intellectually and lays the groundwork for their future involvement.

Three years later, when they meet again at the Rouen opera house, Leon has gained experience with the world and women. They begin to meet once a week in a hotel room at Rouen. Soon after their affair begins, however, Leon seems overpowered by Emma. Its as if their roles have been reversed, with Leon becoming Emmas mistress. Ultimately, she is too much for him. Besides, having an affair with a married woman conflicts with his essentially middle-class values.

The characters Leon Dupuis and Rodolphe Boulanger share similar attributes as well as contrasting ones. The similarity and contrasting characteristics of their personalities are illustrated through their actions, words, as well as by the remarks made by the other characters in the novel concerning them. Leon and Rodolphe are both admired by their peers, and they are both lovers of Madame Bovary, however, the resemblance ends there. Leon's personality is the exact opposite of Rodolphe's. Leon is humble, unassertive, and compassionate, while Rodolphe is haughty, unrelenting, and obdurate. Leon's modesty, shyness, and kindness are depicted through Flaubert's description of him. [Leon] was shy by nature, with the sort of reserve made up of both modesty and dissimulation. Flaubert also makes it evident that Leon is well liked and admired by others. In Yonville, it was found that he had very elegant manners, Monsieur Homais valued him for his education, and Madame Homais was fond of him for his friendliness since he often took the children to the garden. Leon is also very timid and has difficulty expressing his feelings towards Emma.

Leon tortured himself to discover how he could declare his feelings to her. Leon, between the fear of being indiscreet and the desire for an intimacy that he imagined almost impossible, did not know how to proceed. Rodolphe, in contrast to Leon, is bold, ruthless, cunning, and devious. Rodolphe is hardhearted and extremely intelligent. He is also a very experienced man; he had spent a lot of time in female company, and was very knowledgeable about women. He is so intent on making Emma his that [he'll] be bled, if [he has] to. Rodolphe uses various ploys to try and woo Emma. He attempts to manipulate her by spewing forth-sweet lies and portraying to be a pathetic, miserable man in order to gain her affections. Rodolphe claims that he arose and came [to Emma's house] every night and little did she guess what was there, so near and yet so far, a poor miserable Leon's love for Madame Bovary is actually genuine, unlike Rodolphe's. Emma continually rose in his heart, detaching herself from it in the magnificent manner of a goddess soaring to heaven.

Leon expresses to Emma how his mind is always thinking of her and the countless times he had visited her home. Leon recalls every single minute detail concerning Emma, the clothes she wore, and the furniture in her room. He exclaims that he had loved her at first sight and he was in despair when he realized the happiness he would have had if, by the grace of fate, they had met earlier and been indissolubly bound to each other. Unlike Leon, Rodolphe's love for Emma is purely feigned. Emma is simply another mistress to Rodolphe, a passing fancy. He has no feelings for Emma at all and When he was sure of being loved, he stopped trying to please her, and his ways changed imperceptibly. He no longer used words so sweet that they made her cry nor were his caresses so ardent that they drove her mad.

Rodolphe soon became disinterested in Emma, and she resembled all his old mistresses, and the charm of novelty, falling away little by little like articles of clothing, revealed in all its nakedness the eternal monotony of passion. In this manner, Leon and Rodolphe are -depicted as two characters with similar and contrasting qualities. The juxtaposition of their differing personalities aid in adding distinction and emphasizing their personalities. In juxtaposing Rodolphe to Leon, Rodolphe's true character can be seen. He is a manipulating, lying, duplicitous individual, while in contrast, Leon is a kindhearted, sincere, meek individual. Their contrasting and yet similar attributes accentuate the other character's disposition.

General Description

The NASCAR body is the outer shell of the car, which is visible. Looking directly at the car, one would see the body and the parts the make it up. NASCAR bodies are based on American-made (Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, and Pontiac), full-size passenger cars and have a look somewhat like the cars we drive on the streets. There is a "three year rule," this means that no car body can be more than three model years old. The body is designed with main ideas in mind safety, aerodynamics, and fairness in competition.

Once the entire body has been put together it must be a certain length, height, and width. The body and the majority of its parts are put together with sheet metal and certain types of plastic. No fiberglass, aluminum, or exotic material such as titanium is allowed.

The main parts of the body are the air dam/valance, grill opening, windshield, roof rails, roof flaps, and the spoiler (see fig. 1).

Main Parts

Figure

The first part going from front to rear would be the air dam or valance (see fig. ). The names are interchangeable. This panel extends below the vehicles front grill opening and front bumper. The valance, affects the amount of front downforce the vehicle creates. Downforce is an aerodynamic force that presses the cars tightly to the surface of the racetrack. Lowering the valance creates more front downforce. Lengths may vary depending on the downforce needed and must not exceed past a certain length set by NASCAR.

The second part on the front of the car is the grill opening (see fig. ). The grill openings main purpose is to get cool air into the engine. Grill size will vary depending upon the size of the track. For example, a larger opening is needed for shorter tracks due to the increased use of brakes. More air must be allowed to flow through the grill to keep the car cool or overheating will occur.

The windshield would be the next part (see fig. ). The windshield is made up of a polycarbonate material that is also used in fighter planes; this material will not shatter. The windshield is at a minimum of one-quarter-inch thickness. The polycarbonate material, referred to as Lexan, is supported by framework within the car. This keeps debris from flying through the windshield if a car was to wreck or a piece would fall off of a car.

Figure

The next part, moving to the top of the car, would be the roof rails (see fig. ). Roof rails are thin vertical strips of sheet metal that run the length of the top of the car and are about 1 inch high. They are made to disrupt streamlined air flowing over the car during the race. This helps reduce the possibility of leaving the ground if the car wrecked.

A key safety feature on the body is the roof flaps (see fig. ). Each car has two flaps, 0 inches wide and 8 inches tall. The left flap on the car sits at a 0-degree angle to the car and the right one sits at 45-degrees. Hinged at the forward edges, the flaps are held flat against the roof under normal conditions by the airflow over the car. As the car begins to spin away from its original motion it is traveling; the difference in air pressure will lift a flap up and disrupt the airflow over the car so it does not become airborne.

The spoiler is another key part to the car's body (see fig. ). It is a metal strip that helps control airflow, downforce (the pressure of the air on a car as it races), and drag (a resisting force in a cars air stream). It runs length-wise across the trunk of a car. Ford races with spoilers' 6-inches tall and 57-inches wide, Chevrolet and Dodge spoilers are 6 ¼-inches tall and 57-inches wide with Pontiac at 6 ½- inches tall and 57-inches wide.

Concluding Discussion

In NASCAR the driver's safety is the prominent issue. The safety features on the cars are put there to keep risks low as possible for the driver. At speeds near 00 mph the car can be put into vulnerable positions. The front valance, roof rails and flaps, and the spoiler are used to keep the car on the ground. Creating downforce and disrupting the flow of air across the top of the car are two very important features of the car's body concerning safety. Once safety has been addressed the next important feature is aerodynamics. The shape of the body is created by templates which help with this factor. A NASCAR's body is almost perfectly streamlined.

The drawbacks of the NASCAR body are based mainly around the different types of tracks they run at. You must consider that the same car could not possibly race at all the different tracks in the circuit. The larger speedways of .5 miles require a completely different body setup than a shorter 1 mile track. The body is very tedious to put together. All the pieces must be within a certain dimensional limit or the car will not be allowed to race until corrected. The process of creating the body for a NASCAR racecar is incredibly time consuming. It takes the owner's shop 10 working days to make and install the body for just one car.

On the fourth of July, a group of young boys thought that climbing to the top of dead-mans cliff would be a thrill they would never forget. The climb was full of narrow paths and dagger-like rocks. They had precluded that the trek up to the cliff would be their only difficulty. The eldest and most courage's boy of the group reached the summit first. As the boy peeked over the edge into the water his heart sank. " Is this the same cliff we had looked at from the water," he thought to himself. Fear came over him as the other boys ran up behind him. "Jump, jump!" They shouted. He tried to speak but nothing came out. Not wanting them to think of him as a coward, he stepped toward the edge. He had jumped from a small cliff in the past and new all to well what the consequences were if he landed wrong in the water. Heart throbbing, legs shaking, skin sweating, and lungs gasping, he prepared to take the plunge.

What the boy is experiencing is called fear. Fear is an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger. In the boy's case, the danger of not landing in the water perfectly strait could cause him bodily harm. The words dread, fright, alarm, panic, and terror, are essentially all terms that express different levels of fear. Fear is the most general term and implies anxiety and loss of courage. Everyone on the face of the earth has experienced this emotion. Different elements bring fear to peoples mind. The fear of heights played a large roll in the boy's uncertainty in jumping. Some of the many fears people experience include heights, death, abandonment, eternity, and ghosts.

The causes of fear that one may experience can be traced back to his earliest childhood memories. A painful experience on a bicycle may generate a fear of riding a bike for many years. A near drowning experience while learning to swim could make one fear the water for the rest of his life. When I was nine years old I saw a horror movie about clown dolls. At night the dolls would come to life and torture people. For five years after I saw that movie I would have nightmares. And still to this day I cannot sleep in a room that has a clown in it. Fear causes anticipation in ones mind and an awareness of danger. Associating a physical or mental pain with an activity or object makes one have a fear of the dangers associated with it.

There are three different types of fear superstitious, intelligent, and uncertainty. Superstitious fear is a fear of imaginary and make-believe things. The "monsters" in the closet are a fear that young children have that is totally superficial. The television shows that a kid sees or the stories that are told to him by other siblings can cause his imagination to make up a creature that want to "get" him in his sleep. Intelligent fear is one that comes as one gets older and gains more knowledge of the world around him. A girl that carries mace with her as she walks home through a bad part of town is scared of getting raped or robbed. She is only fearful of getting raped or robbed because she has either read the newspaper or saw on the news, people who have been attach in that part of the town. The fear of uncertainty is, not knowing the outcome of ones action. The boy that was about to jump off the cliff was uncertain to whether or not he would land safely in the water. Also being uncertain of whether of not the water is deep enough plays a role in his uncertainty of the task. Fear is a natural emotion but having knowledge about ones surroundings can give enough courage to face those fears with some confidence. And that little bit of confidence is what one needs to safely overcome the challenge.Order custom research paper on The definition of fear

Fear is not a good feeling; there is no freedom, happiness, or admiralty in it. One can spend a lifetime trying to conquer all his fears and never triumph. However that does not mean that one should not try. I read an inspiring quote a long time ago that read "There can be no courage without fear and no success without courage. Overcoming a fear will develop courage to take on more of life's obstacles. The boy that was debating jumping off that cliff had two options. One being that he could try warming up on a smaller jump and progressively jumping higher. Or two, He could just jump and risk personal injury. The first is the best way in overcoming ones fears. By knowing the skills on the intermediate level first, one can safely move up to the more difficult advanced trials.
