Italian film makers have long been regarded as those of a sexist sort, all but sensitive to the feminist movement. Many critics, such as Laura Mulvey, complain that the main characters are portrayed as the epitome of male machismo in pursuit of the constant submission of women. Instead of directly refuting and disproving this trend, Lina Wertmuller in 17's the Seduction of Mimi, utilizes a novel way of strengthening the perception of women in film. Through satire and overexaggeration, Wertmuller successfully turns the tables on traditional Italian cinema inobtrusively, to give credit to those supporting female roles oftentimes overlooked. Carmello, or Mimi, is a rather inconsistent protagonist especially seen in his relationships. This proves an extreme contrast to the assured and strong female characters in his life.

Mimi, a hardworking laborer, affronts as the Sicilian macho everyman. He works at the quarry, which begins the opening scene of the movie, where Mimi mines for rocks, representative of his dead-end future of a worthless and burdensome continuom. Throughout the film, Mimi is rather inconsistent in his political stance. He is ever changing in his political views, influenced by his surrounding environment. It is questionable whether Mimi even has a formal political affiliation. At the films inception, it seems as if Mimi votes against the mafioso only because his friend urges him to cast a guaranteed secret ballot. Mimi seems rather disinterested in politics actually, only faking communist passion when he defends his new love interest, Fiore, against her attackers. Later, after he accepts defeat from mafioso pressure, Mimi actually campaigns for the mafia candidate. Therefore, it is assumed that Mimi only becomes politically active for alterior motives, to seek love and recognition from friends, family and lovers.

Wertmuller also adds another tinge to her protagonist that distinguishes Mimi from many other Italian male figures. Sick of the heroic male character that rescues and solves all, the director shows Mimi in a cowardly light. He is painted a foolish child many a time, running from the mafia, women, and all aspects of his life. The mafia seem to be omniscently surrounding him, controlling every moment of his life, a similar suffocating feeling created by the close-up zoom cuts of images of authority and the three-mole symbol on their cheeks. The audience is placed in the uncomfortable setting as well, but only for few moments, as the ridiculous, surrealist representation is too comical to accept as real. After more repetitions of this film technique, it is apparent that Lina Wertmuller is making a mockery of Mimi's paranoia and inescapable fear and domination. The awkwardness of Mimi and Fiore's pre-fornicative meetings also depict Mimi as a whining little boy pleading and begging for attention.

At a superficial glance, Mimi and Fiore's relationship is illuded as one of true love, but as one who studies Italian film, it is obvious that the opposite is true. As inconsistent as Mimi is in politics and personality, so is he with his women. Some in the audience, as well as Fiore in the film, are fooled by Mimi's adolescent act pleading for love. It is plain to see after the fact however, that it was all just part of an act to seduce Fiore into bed. The next morning, after Fiore gifted her sacred virginity to Mimi, suddenly he turns into the tough virginal conquerer; countering the sweet love-makin scene of the previous night. Had he truly loved Fiore, Mimi would have not taken such painstaking detail in seeking vengeance on the sargeant who slept with Rosalia. He used the same technique to woo Amalia, as he did to woo Fiore. So throughout his actions the two courtships are virtually identical. Who is to say whethere one was more sincere or not? There were many other options other than sleeping with the dominatrix Amalia that Mimi could have taken to regain his nominal honor. It had been stated previously from Fiore's own mouth that she would not tolerate his cheating, even with his own wife. Had he valued her feelings, Mimi would have found other routes to seeking justice. He not only cheated on Rosalia for his "love" Fiore, but he cheated on his love for unecessary retaliation.

The protagonist in the film is no predictable Italian male, and Lina Wertmuller creates these flaws to show the incredulous nature of men, in her character Mimi. Through gross exaggeration of his inconsistencies, Wertmuller demonstrates not only one flaw in males, but a combination that can be a diverse representation of all males. It is not hard to see to which side of the feminist issue Lina Wertmuller stands, as she intricately weaves the story of three very different, but equally strong women to sort out the life of Mimi.

Self-centered

I believe that many people throughout history and today care more about themselves than anything else. To them the only things that matter are those that directly affect their lives. They do not care about other's feelings, and how their actions may affect others around them. Thomas Hardy also demonstrates this idea in Tess of the D'urbervilles. In this book a character named Alec D'urberville went through his life only thinking of himself. Alec D'urberville was by far a self-centered man.

Custom Essays on explain by example

First of all, he seems to always need to have his way with everything that he feels concerns him. He believes that since he is from a family of power that no one should stand up to him. If anyone dared to refuse him, he fought until he was given his way.

When Alec first picked Tess up from her house in Marlott he insisted that she ride behind him on his horse. Tess found this improper and proceeded to walk to the manner. After much nagging by Alec, Tess finally agreed to accompany him on his horse. While on the way to the manner, Alec then ordered Tess to let him kiss her. Tess protested this idea, but after growing tired finally gave into his order. He then planted a warm kiss on her cheek.

Another example of this is while Alec and Tess were in the garden of the manor having a picnic. When it came time for desert, Alec pulled out a bundle or strawberries and tried to feed the to Tess. Tess found this repulsive and backed away from him. Alec knowing that he had authority over Tess forced her to eat them out of his hand. She obeyed his order and the ordeal ended.

A third example was when Tess had gone down to a party in the next town over. Alec had surprised her by showing up at the party. Upon leaving, Alec made Tess let him take her home. She refused his offer and said she would walk the ten miles back to the manor. Alec in response, threatened to send her away from the manner. The thought of this frightened her, and she agreed to ride with him. After a little while of riding Alec knowingly got off track and rode into the woods. He then forced Tess to stay with him overnight.

My second reason for calling Alec self-centered is that he often used harsh words and actions towards those who opposed him. He was easily angered when people had other views than his own. Alec often responded in a negative way to the situations.

After the first time Alec met Tess he called her "a crumby girl" because she had refused to have dinner with him that night. This comment came from Alec not getting what he wanted at the time, for in reality he thought she was beautiful.

Secondly, while they were on their way to the manor, Tess had backed away when Alec had tried to kiss her. Alec felt betrayed by her, and in response he jerked back the reigns causing the horse to buck. After blaming Tess for the horse's actions, he then proceeded to say, "So you can go from your word like that, you witch?"

A final example happened while on their way home from the party. Tess had accidentally dropped her hat causing Alec to have to stop and let her off the horse. When she refused to get back on the horse right away he cursed and swore at her. He called her everything he could think of at the time.

My third reason for believing Alec was self-centered is that he was constantly trying to get Tess to fall in love with him. He thought nothing about her feelings and of how she felt about him. Alec felt that if he had her nothing else would matter.

As Tess was leaving the manor for good, Alec told her that she would have been lucky to marry him, or a man like him. He told Tess that all of the previous women have so far regretted leaving him. Alec was attempting to make her re-think her decision of leaving him and the manor. Alec knew that if she left he would never have a chance with her again.

When Tess finally came to him a second time after many years had passed Alec thought this was it. He already had a marriage agreement drawn up to make everything official. Tess, seeing his intentions, was scared off. She eventually decided the only way to end this ongoing problem was to murder Alec, which she ended up doing.

Finally, while Tess was living at the D'urberville manor Alec chose to take advantage of Tess. During her stay there, Alec rapper her causing her to become pregnant with his child. Alec was secretly hoping that this baby would secure their futures together. Tess, in response to her pregnancy, moved back to her home in Marlott. This move caused the opposite effect that Alec had been hoping for.

In conclusion I truly feel that Alec D'urberville was a self-centered man. He was responsible for many hardships and heartaches in Tess's life. His consistent drive to always have to get his way caused Tess to distrust men for the rest of her life. She vowed from then on that she would die unmarried. In the end it was his unwillingness to listen to others that ended up costing him his life.

In the eighteenth century, the people of Europe began to open their eyes and see past the religious, political and philosophical dogma that had been blinding them for almost a thousand years. This era is now known as the Enlightenment and is a turning point in history that transformed the ancient world into its modern state. The fore-runners of this movement were artists and writers whose ideas, by way of their works, spread across the European continent and into other parts of the world. A country that symbolizes this movement is France, the home of the philosophes. The French novelist Voltaire satirizes certain institutions and beliefs in Candide in order to spread his messages across the globe. In his most famous work, Candide, he tells the tale of a young man's adventures across the globe in search of his true love. While the title character travels, he learns to reject certain parts of society and the social structure. In Candide, Voltaire satirizes philosophy, romance, and religion.

Pangloss, a "professor of metaphysico-theologico-cosmolo-nigology" (l.1), is a strong believe in the optimistic philosophy. He and his philosophy are as absurd as his title throughout the novel. He believes that things cannot be otherwise and that all is for the best. Upon his arrival in Lisbon, he and Candide witness an earthquake in which the city is left in ruins. To explain the phenomenon, Pangloss says that "it is impossible that things should be other than they are; for everything is right" (p.11). This gives the reader the feeling that Pangloss in foolish because the deaths of thousands of people cannot be for the greater good. The philosopher is hung at a auto da fe but does not die. A surgeon purchases his seemingly and wakes him up during an operation. After he reaches Constantinople, he enters a mosque and, because he is Christian, is arrested and forced to work in the galleys. Despite all of the things that happened to him, Pangloss still maintains that this is the "best of all possible worlds" (p.87).

Candide is madly in love with Cunegonde, the daughter of the Baron of Thuder-ten-Tronckh. In Candide, romance is what is the main cause of the characters' hardships; in short, love is painful. In Chapter I, Candide and Cunegonde kiss and are caught by the Baron who chases Candide from the castle with "great kicks on the backside" (p.), while Cunegonde is boxed on the ears by the Baroness. It is this great love which causes Candide to kill the Jew and the Inquisitor in Lisbon and to attempt to kill Cunegonde's brother in South America. When Candide finally reunites with his love in Turkey, he is, ironically, no longer in love with her and is "seized with horror" (p.8) by her ugliness. Furthermore, he no longer considers her to be a woman, but rather an "object" (p.8). This shows that love is but a childhood fantasy and not long lasting. French romance is also satirized in Candide. The French are inconsistent as far as love goes and quickly forget past romances. The Marchioness of Parolignac is shocked when Candide does not fall in love with her for "a Frenchman would have said, 'It is true that I have loved Miss Cunegonde, but seeing [the Marchioness], I think I no longer love her'" (p.61).

The country of El Dorado and the customs of its people bring about a religious debate that dates back to the time of Luther, Calvin and Zwingli. In El Dorado, the people "do not pray to [God for] He has given them all they need" (p.44). Furthermore, all of the county's inhabitants are priests and there are no monks who "dispute, govern, cabal, and who burn people that are not of their opinion" (p.44). The Inquisition is also a subject of satire in Candide. In Lisbon, the Inquisition captures various people in order to preform an auto da fe. The reasons include marrying one's grandmother, rejecting bacon which larded a chicken, speaking one's mind, and listening with an air of approbation to a philosophy the Inquisition rejected. In Constantinople, Pangloss enters a mosque and picks up a bouquet of flowers that a woman dropped, is identified as a Christian, and is ordered "a hundred lashes on the soles of the feet and sent to the galleys" (p.81). Therefore, the Roman Catholic Church, the Inquisition, and Islam are satirized in Candide.Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Satire in "Candide"

Diction, exaggeration and symbolism transport the reader into Voltaire's eighteenth century world. The reader is made to reject the philosophy of optimism, think badly of love at first sight and romance, and to look at the Church and Inquisition from the author's perspective. Voltaire is very successful in bringing his point across to the reader and his work was one of the major influences on the Enlightenment and its followers. The works of Voltaire and his colleagues were a driving force in the formation of modern society. Voltaire, Francois. Candide. Trans. Anonymous. Ed. Stanley Appelbaum. New York Mineola, 11

The Internet¡¯s popularity has increased tremendously in the passing decade. As the availability of personal computer increased, the internet gradually progressed beyond the limited use in military and research area into economic, educational, and social area. the internet changes the way we live, work, entertain, educate; it brings us the greater convenience, enhanced productivity, unlimited information, and expanded knowledge.

But along with these new opportunities will come new challenges for which there are no previous reference. In this essay, I will discuss the negative influence of internet use on our contemporary society.

Proponents believe that the Internet will improve the quality of education system and make educational opportunities accessible to people of all ages and all geographic locations; they argue that students can learn more effectively when they are interactively engaged in the teaching processes and, no matter where they are from and who they are, have the equal access to the resources of most prestigious libraries. As a result, students can get a degree even without spending one day in classroom. In other words, the internet make the schools and teachers irrelevant. However, I think the internet is far away from replacing the traditional education. The internet can teach you the knowledge, but it cannot teach you the important values such as responsibility, discipline, cooperation. Teachers teach students how to behave in the society, how to respect others. These values, critical for our society, cannot be taught by computers. In the traditional studying environment, normally as a group, students need discipline, self-restraint , and cooperation to be able to get along with the other students whereas they cannot learn these things from the internet. Moreover. if students need specific help under certain circumstance, what will the internet offer? For instance, how will the internet respond to a student with the intention of committing suicide? the internet probably cannot offer the answer that will help him get out of his sufferings.

With the Internet growing at an astounding rate, businesses around the world see numerous opportunities presented by this new medium. Companies can sell their products directly to their customers; customers can customize the products, interact with the suppliers, and do business just sitting comfortably in front of the desktop. The transactions can be completed cheaply and efficiently. Doing business in cyberspace may be enjoyable; it can also, however, be frustrating, confusing, and hazardous. First, there are not enough and efficient rules to regulate the activities on the cyberspace and there is little authority to enforce the rules and punish the violators. Second, the security is still a major impediment to the growth of electrical commerce; we have witnessed thousands of internet attacks, many of which are extremely serious. Our important private information, such as credit card number, identity, password, can be stolen or altered en route when you do business online. Finally the suppliers maybe not tell the truth and the payment offered is not real. All these kind of concerns contribute to the people¡¯s reluctance to get involved into online business. Therefore, as long as the internet remains an open, unregulated space, companies would rather show their products online than sell them online.

Cheap College Papers on The Influence of Internet Use

Along with the enormous promise that the internet offers our society, we also need to consider the negative influence on our society resulting from excessive use of the internet. Many users may get addicted in using the internet; they spend extraordinary amount of time exploring the internet. consequently, some users neglected their careers and relationships, sometimes even resulting in ruined marriage and lost jobs. Furthermore, the internet is a dangerous place for kids. Children may be targeted by stalkers or those who might take advantage of them; they can easily access the inappropriate material such as pornographic pictures or violence or hate sites. In addition, our overdependence on the internet, which is vulnerable to hackers, terrorist attack, power failures, and software bugs, will turn into a nightmare when the internet is brought down.

In conclusion, everything has two sides, for example, the invention of nuclear power. For the internet use, on the one hand, we can benefit from the development of the information technology; on the other hand, just as discussed above, the internet can also be a nightmare with regard to the concerns about the security, the regulations, and the privacy of the internet. People living in the contemporary society need to balance both sides of using the internet and pay more attention to the negative influence of internet while enjoying the advantages brought by the internet.

Two Fathers and Two Sons

In the two poems ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± by Theodore Roethke (page 1) and ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± by Robert Hayden (page ) father is the main character. Roethke¡¯s poem ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± portrays the scene of a rough dance between father and son. The poem, ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is about the memory of a father rising up early on cold Sunday mornings to warm the rooms. Both poems portray a man¡¯s childhood memories with his father though in different styles.

The first poem ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz,¡± is in a conventional form which has four stanzas with each stanza consist of four lines. For example, in ¡°The whiskey on your breath/could make a small boy dizzy; /But I hung on like death/Such waltzing was not easy.¡± words ¡°breath¡±, ¡°death¡± and ¡°dizzy¡±, ¡°easy¡± rhyme, and so on in the following stanzas. Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is written in the free verse style. ¡°Free verse is just what it says it is, poetry that is written without proper rules about form, rhythm, meter, etc.¡± (Free Verse Lesson 4) It is ¡°to create new rhythm-as the expression of new moods-and not to copy old rhythm.¡± (VI) Hayden showed his feeling with an image of father rising up early on Sunday morning, and warming the room for his family.

¡°Imagination can use the simplest diction, because it has got the truth found what can appeal to the right mind of man, because it is strong in life, thought and language. Rich poetic vocabulary is then unnecessary.¡±(50) both poems here have present clear pictures of their childhood. In ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡±, ¡°Whiskey¡± on father¡¯s breath is one of many clues that this is actually not real Waltz and ¡°his dance is more a romp through the house with a stop in the kitchen and another at the boy¡¯s bedroom, where presumably he is unceremoniously dumped into bed.¡±(Page 14) We can see the disapproval from mother¡¯s ¡°countenance¡± which ¡°could not unfrown itself¡±. But she does nothing to stop them, so we can imagine that they all enjoy this. ¡°Then you waltzed me off to bed/Still clinging to your shirt¡± such simple words leads us to the unconditional love of the small boy. While the ¡°Tactile images of heat and cold inform Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± in which the speaker¡¯s father wakes up early ¡°in the blue black cold¡± to make ¡°banked fires blaze.¡±¡± (Page 6) He does his duty silently, and tried to support his family. But ¡°no one ever thanked him¡±, and his home is still plagued by ¡°chronic angers¡±. What a touching image! The image in Hayden¡¯s poem is somewhat more ¡°cold¡±.Cheap Custom Essays on Two Fathers and Two Sons

¡°The tone of a poem, like the tone of our speech, implies the speaker¡¯s attitude(s) towards the poem¡¯s subject. The speaker¡¯s attitude can sometimes be subtly expressed, and we need to carefully study the poem¡¯s wording; rhythm and images to understand the tone.¡±(lyric.htm) so that¡¯s why I compare the tone in the end. There are different interpretations of the tone of ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡±; some critics have seen this boy¡¯s memories as a recollection of a time of abuse. In our text book, it is said that the tone of the poem seems nostalgic, though not sentimentally so. ¡°The boy, now a man, remembers his father as ¡°papa,¡± clearly an affectionate term. The high-spirited bouncing rhythm of the poem seems to counter any indication that the father¡¯s drinking or the son¡¯s fears are its central concerns.¡±(Page 14) On the other hand, Hayden¡¯s poem is filled with guilty. ¡°He regrets how unappreciative of his father he was as a child.¡±(Page ) Children often become so boiled and self-involved that they take for granted what their parents give to them. ¡°What did I know, what did I know/of love¡¯s austere and lonely offices?¡± There will be a time that we realize their sacrifices and it is often too late to realize.

In conclusion, ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± presents a conventional form that uses humorous languages and ¡°drunken¡± images to present an unforgettable memory that a man ¡°danced¡± with his father. Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is a free verse style poem that uses simple languages and tactile images to convey the melancholy memories that a man ¡°misinterpreted¡± his father. In each poem, different form, image and tone is used, but the theme of the complicated love between the son and the father is conveyed through both poems.

In the 17 movie Amistad, Steven Spielberg illustrates the events that took place in 18 on the Spanish ship, The Amistad (La Amistad). The movie travels through the events with vivid and powerful emotion. The slaves, even though they could not speak English, undoubtedly demonstrated their intense longing for freedom in Spielberg's version of the historical event.

The setting of Amistad proved to be frequently accurate. The backdrop of the movie was unfailing to the period in which it occurred . There are a few mistakes, though, that went unseen in the making of the film. The American flag that swayed proudly throughout the film carried too many stars. It is the present day American flag that the viewer notices waving through the air, while the flag should have contained less stars. Not all of the states that construct the U.S. had been added to the flag in the early 1800s. Another inconsistency with the environment around the movie took place during the scene with John Quincy Adams standing outside the Capitol building talking with Theodore Jeadson. There is a dome on the Capitol, which was not truly constructed onto the building until 186. This is a apparent blemish, since the movie was set in 18 - 1840s.

Spielberg revealed the characters in the movie with massive accuracy. The feeling that the actors exulted beautifully exemplified how the slaves, attorneys, townspeople, and even the President was reacted at that moment in time. The lone character that was conflicting with the actual person was the slaves' attorney, Roger Baldwin. In reality, Roger Baldwin was not youthful and inexperienced. He was actually about fifty years old, and a exceedingly esteemed lawyer. A few years after the Amistad case, he was elected governor of Connecticut. Other than that one instance of character change, the movie did well in the character aspect to reenact the strong feelings and thoughts that commenced during the Amistad incident.

The plot of the movie was astonishingly not overstuffed with false facts of what transpired. For the most part, Spielberg stuck with the correct events that took place, making evident the magnitude of the whole situation for the slaves and the people of America. Most likely due to making the movie "more exciting" or just to make it flow easier for the audience, there were some parts altered or added. The significant character, the enslaved Cinque, was not really detained in Africa and then instantaneously exported to Cuba out of the slave depot at Lomboko. This is what the movie demonstrates, but it is fictitious. Cinque was imprisoned a few years beforehand by black Africans, which was a common practice. Then he was sold to slave traders.

Write your Amistad research paper

When the movie begins, the opening scene consists of a sweat-covered Cinque ripping at a nail to pick the shackles that bind his wrists, while he sits on the lower deck of the Amistad with his fingers raw and drenched in blood. This is a exceptionally compelling scene that perhaps grabs hold of the hearts of many. The problem is that Cinque actually got free by stooping and picking up a piece of metal that he saw when he was topside one day. He used the metal that he recovered to pick the lock, not a nail.

Numerous plot alterations were focused around Cinque. In the movie, Cinque was in attendance for the Supreme Court's spoken argument. Unfortunately, what actually happened was Cinque was imprisoned every day of his life in America. Also, John Quincy Adams states in his closing argument to the Supreme Court that Cinque went to his home, and they had a conversation about African Violets. Truthfully, they never had this conversation, and Cinque had on no account been to John Quincy Adams house. In fact, African Violets were native to East Africa, not Sierra Leone in the west. (Cinque was from Sierra Leone.)

There were additional tribulations with the plot. The film shows the slave depot at Lomboko ruined by the Royal Navy after the Amistad trial. In actual reality, it was destroyed in 18, shortly after Cinque was exported from there. That was extensively before the Amistad trial, which began in 1840.

The movie also refers to slaves being thrown overboard from ships. This was not an occurrence, at least, not in the trip in question. Most ships that contained slave traders that were good at what they did, had enough food on the ship to feed their "cargo" between Sierra Leone and Cuba. The only time a slave was thrown overboard in mid-ocean was when his or her health created a grave threat to the crew and "cargo".

The final part that was not consistent with the true story was the ending in which it tells what happened to Cinque when he went back to Africa. It recounts that his family was all gone, and his whole village had been destroyed. It falls short in including that he became a slave trader.

All in all, Spielberg stayed true to the original events and emotions that went with the Amistad trial and after-effects. Most of the additional sequences that proved to be false were due to entertainment purposes. Spielberg put forth tremendous exertion in repeating events that are tragically poignant to countless people, and he pulled it off brilliantly.

John Stubbs Love and Role Playing in A Farewell to Arms

John Stubbs essay is an examination of the defense

which he believes Henry and Catherine use to protect

themselves from the discovery of their insignificance and

Order Custom A Farewell to Arms Analysis paper

powerlessness...in a world indifferent to their well

being... He asserts that role-playing by the two main

characters, and several others in the book, is a way to

escape the realization of human mortality which is unveiled

by war. Stubbs thinks that Hemingway utilized role-playing

as a way to explore the strengths and weaknesses of his two

characters. Stubbs says that by placing Henrys ordered

life in opposition to Catherines topsy-turvy one, and then

letting each one assume a role which will bring them

closer together, Hemingway shows the pairs inability to

accept the hard, gratuitous quality of life.

Stubbs begins by showing other examples, notably in In Our

Time and The Sun Also Rises, in which Hemingways characters

revert to role-playing in order to escape or retreat from

their lives. The ability to create characters who play

roles, he says, either to maintain self-esteem or to

escape, is one Hemingway exploits extraordinarily well in A

Farewell to Arms and therefore it is his richest and most

successful handling of human beings trying to come to terms

with their vulnerability.

As far as Stubbs is concerned, Hemingway is quite blatant in

letting us know that role-playing is what is occurring. He

tells that the role-playing begins during Henry and

Catherines third encounter, when Catherine directly

dictates what is spoken by Henry. After this meeting the two

become increasingly comfortable with their roles and easily

adopt them whenever the other is nearby. This is apparent

also in that they can only successfully play their roles

when they are in private and any disturbance causes the

game to be disrupted. The intrusion of the outside world

in any form makes their role-playing impossible, as

evidenced at the race track in Milan, where they must be

alone. The people surrounding them make Catherine feel

uncomfortable and Henry has to take her away from the crowd.

He goes on to describe how it is impossible for them to play

the roles when they are apart and how they therefore become

more dependent upon each others company.

Stubbs goes on to explain how, neither mistakes

role-playing for a truly intimate relationship, but

both recognize that it can be a useful device for satisfying

certain emotional needs. He says that originally Henry and

Catherine are playing the game for different reasons but

eventually move to play it as a team. Henry is role-playing

to regain the sense of order he has lost when he realizes

the futility of the war and his lack of place in it.

Catherine is role-playing to deal with the loss of her

fiance and to try to find order in the arena of the war.

When they are able to role-play together, the promise of

mutual support is what becomes so important to them as they

try to cope with their individual human vulnerability.

He also analyzes the idyllic world introduced early in the

story by the priest at the mess and later realized by Henry

and Catherine in Switzerland. They fall fully into their

roles when they row across the lake on their way to their

idealized world. The fact that they actually are able to

enter this make-believe world strengthens their game and

allows it to continue longer than it would have otherwise.

And once they are in this new world they adopt new roles

which allow them to continue their ruse. They also need to

work harder to maintain the game because far from the

front they are both still aware the war is proceeding and

they are no longer a part of it. The world in which they

exist in reality (!) is not conducive to role-playing

because it tries repeatedly to end their game.

Stubbs manages to uncover numerous inezces in which the

two are role-playing and he makes a very interesting case

that this is exactly what they are doing and not just his

imagination reading into the story. He does make certain

assumptions, that their love is not real, that the

characters are searching for order, which are not completely

justified or even necessary to prove his point. He also

forces an intentionality upon Hemingway which could have

been avoided without harming his theory. Towards the end of

the essay Stubbs infers that their role-playing is inferior

to true intimacy, which is a point that, although he

defends well, is not central to his theory and seems to

detract from his objectivity.

The essay is a valuable tool to help the reader underezd

this view of what is happening through Henry and Catherines

relationship and how they use each other to maintain their

self-images, provide themselves with psychological support,

and in a way escape the war. Hemingway may not have been

trying to purposely create a role-playing scenario, but

Stubbs essay will benefit someone wishing to explore this

aspect of the relationship of the two main characters in

greater depth. the library

Relational Database Management Systems

Relational database systems (RDBMS) stem from the work of relational algebra of E. F. Codd. This type of database is the fundamental underpinning of nearly all databases (especially legacy applications) in use today. In Codds view, databases should be based upon tables or relations. In this model, the physical implementation of the database is abstracted away from the user. Users query the database using a high level query language (e.g., SQL). Relations are made up of columns, which have headings indicating the attribute represented by that column. The rows of the relation are also called tuples, and there is one tuple component for each attribute (column) in that relation. A relation or table name, along with that relations attributes, make up the relational schema.

As mentioned above, relational databases represent the first implementations of database management systems. Thus, they were tasked with supporting the earliest forms of database applications. Traditional application domains consisted of (typically) a fixed collection of simple data types (such as characters and integers). The real power of relational systems lies in the ability to perform complex queries over the data.

Object Relational Database Management Systems

Object relational database management systems (ORDBMS) are an attempt to meet the demands of more complex data representation through extending relational database systems with object oriented technology. The main contribution of the ORDBMS is its handling of complex object-centric, persistent data while maintaining the RDBMS querying methods (SQL) to operate on that data. Not only are more complex data types supported, but user-defined types are supported as well, greatly increasing the application domains to which an ORDBMS can be applied. ORDBMSs are often considered the bridge between RDBMSs and OODBMSs.

Object Oriented Database Management Systems

Object oriented database management systems (OODBMS), rather than attempting to extend relational systems as ORDBMSs do, are viewed as an alternative approach to meeting the demands of more complex (and persistent) data types. The need to handle complex object-centric data as the main data element is the driving force behind OODBMSs. These systems attempt to extend object oriented programming languages, techniques, and tools to provide a means to support data management tasks. Whereas ORDBMSs take the approach of starting from where RDBMSs leave off, OODBMSs approach from the opposite direction (a programming language itself) to solve the problem of handling complex data types.

0-6 You may want to rethink this relationship. This person certainly has no romantic feelings for you, and its questionable whether he or she is even a friend. This person is hiding much from you, and is unwilling to commit...or theres simply not a spark between you. Something just doesnt click here! Worst of all, this friend is never there for you when you need help.

But dont worry, theres someone out there looking for you. You just need to look in another pasture. And when you find the right one, the relationship will be so much better than this one that youll never look back.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7-11 Youre definitely close friends. You share much with each other, and enjoy the time you spend together, but its a little premature to tell whether your relationship will blossom into something more.

Give the relationship time to grow. See where it goes from here. The seeds you plant now could bloom into a red rose if properly nurtured.

1-15 Youre close friends, but your relationship could turn into something greater. Theres definitely chemistry here. Sparks are in the air.

You spend a lot of time together, sharing tears and joy, and you have a lot in common. Truly, you feel for each other.

Maybe one of you just needs to make the first move. Invite him or her over for a candlelight dinner, and then watch a romantic movie together. Such an evening may be just the ice breaker you need to turn this spark into a flame.

Without a friend or someone to talk to, you'd become awfully lonely; you'd possibly go mad. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, loneliness is a significant theme. Crooks, an African-American man who suffers from discrimination due to his skin color, endures intense solitude, for he's denied the privilege to enter and sleep in the bunk house with the rest of the men. Curley's wife, the only female character in the novel, undergoes extreme isolation. She is never given a name, and only referred to as the wife of Curley. She represents a sexual object more than an individual with the same emotions as everyone else. Both Crooks and Curley's wife experience feelings of ostracism, and they both suffer from the wrath of discrimination.

Crooks suffers from severe loneliness due the color of his skin. The unfortunate man undergoes intensely cruel treatment for being an African-American. He had no one to talk to, no one to be with, and no one to comfort him due to his isolation from the rest of the men working on the ranch. As we see, Crooks displays his anger and frustration when he cries, "You ain't no skinner. They's no call for a bucker to come into the barn at all. You ain't no skinner. You ain't got nothing to do with the horses" (68). He preys upon those under him, so he attacks Lennie, an easy target. He even tries to dictate Lennie when he declares, "Well, I got a right to have a light. You go on get outta my room. I ain't wanted in the bunk house, and you ain't wanted in my room" (68). He desperately tries to regain his self-esteem by dictating a white man, someone representing the rest of the men who have treated him poorly in the past. He aims to order Lennie to stay out of his room as the rest of the men have done to him in the past, but as he tried to uphold his dignity, he realized he had been in that spot his whole life, enduring the harsh discrimination, and all he ever desired was a friend to talk to. He exposes his loneliness to Lennie when he gently explains, "Maybe you can see now. You got George. You know he's goin' to come back. S'pose you didn't have nobody. S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play rummy 'cause you was black" (7). This quote demonstrates Crooks' innermost feelings of seclusion from the rest of the men. At first he attempts to attack Lennie and abuse him because he is weaker than him, but afterwards he realizes he has no one else that would talk to him so he spills out all of the feelings he has kept inside of him to Lennie. As we find out, Crooks isn't the only one who exhibits feelings of being an outsider.

Curley's wife, in addition to Crooks, undergoes severe seclusion from the rest of the men working on the ranch. Steinbeck deliberately creates the negative image of Curley's wife, even depriving her of a name. This so called loo-loo is the only female on the ranch, so consequently she has no other women to chat with. She tries to talk to the other men, but Curley is terribly jealous therefore she consistently has the fear he will catch her. She presents this dread when she constantly questions, " 'I'm lookin' for Curley,' she said. Her voice had a nasal, brittle quality….'He was in here a minute ago, but he went.' 'Oh!' She put her hands behind her back and leaned against the door frame so that her body was thrown forward. 'You're the new fellas that just come, ain't ya?" (1). She constantly uses the excuse of looking for Curley when what she really wants is to talk to the men. Like Crooks, she lashes out on those weaker than she is. We witness this when she threatens, "Well, you keep your place then Nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny" (81). She attacks Crooks because he is black, so his is subsequently lower than she is. This "tart" feels the need to have some authority because the rest of the men so often reject her. Throughout the book we learn her desperate longing for someone to talk to other than Curley. Eventually she resorts to Lennie whom she'd normally have nothing to do with, but due to her isolation, and her rejection of Crooks, Lennie is her last hope. She reveals her desperation when she asks in frustration, "Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely" (86). Curley's wife finally becomes aggravated when Lennie, whom she expects to talk to her because he's weaker than she is, denies her the satisfaction of conversing with her. She finally becomes so desperate she lets her guard down and allows Lennie to stroke her hair, which eventually leads to her death.

Hence, the severe discrimination of both Crooks and Curley's wife finally prosper in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Despite their endless craving for a friend, when someone finally comes along who is willing to talk to them, they shun them away trying to regain some dignity, instantly forgetting what their ultimate goal is. After everything is said and done, and once you have no one left, in the end you will always regret those choices you made. No matter what skills you have, how good-looking you are, or how nice you are, without a friend to share it with, everything is worthless.

Economic Policy Debate

Investment Banking is basically the practice of a financial firm issuing and underwriting stock for a separate company who pays a fee for the company to do so.

Investment banks, and firms serve a range of activities, along with selling, and, trading stocks, and bonds they provide financial advice. These services are being provided to companies, governments, non-profit institutions, and individuals. The research teams of an investment bank provide the link to the institutions that own the clients stock. Part of an investment banks duty is to provide knowledge and advice to corporations. If the research branch of an investment bank were separated then many primary functions would not be possible.

Separation of investment banking and investment research is a theory that supposedly lets analysts express their true views on stocks without fear of cramping the style of investment bankers. Complete separation is such an extreme answer to a problem that it is not plausible and would likely create more problems then it would fix.

Order Custom Essay on Investment banking v. Investment research

Researchers and investment bankers have been tied together for over 50 years and even though maybe consumers should not get their investment information from such a biased source, this favoritism towards companies that they are doing business with has been an expected part of the business. Companies and consumers are both accustomed to the analysts producing reports that are basically paid advertising. Most investors are aware of this. The recent extreme reaction to this problem is only because of the recent drop in the stock market. Something should be done to make investors fully aware of the difference between a biased source and more biased source, but you will never fully get rid of bias or bias reports

A bank has to hire analysts. Maybe the government can restrict publication of the their reports but it can't restrict a company from hiring analysts. Analysts produce helpful and informational reports to companies and consumers free of charge. If separation were to occur companies and consumers and banks would all have to buy costly reports. This would basically drive up the entire cost of investing.

This is taking an extreme measure for a practice that is not frequent or overly abused. The research reports should be required by law to be clearly distinguished as produced by the Investment Bank that the company is doing business with, much in the same way long advertisements in magazines have ADVERTISMENT written on the top and bottom of the page to make clear to the magazine reader that this is not an article whose opinions represent those of the editor

It would not only put many good analysts out of a job but, also call for a whole new field of researchers that without being affiliated with Investment banks and firms would have to charge a lot more money then usual analysts. Jon Eagleton (who is president of Investars, which is a research firm that tracks analyst performance) said, "At the end of the day it would actually be the individual investors who would suffer from the separation the most." That is interesting considering the whole theory of separating research from banking would be to protect and help the investors.

As Association for Investment Management & Research president Thomas Bowman points out, it wouldnt do anything to eliminate other conflicts of interest that analysts fall prey to, such as pressure from the companies they cover to maintain a positive outlook and pressure from money-management clients who read their research not to downgrade the stocks they own. These are pressures that have not been addressed,

Unfortunately it is true that there are dishonest analysts working to increase the business of investment banking. As in every field there are also thousands of hard-working honest Americans giving the best reports they can for their clients. Passing this law would punish all of the good firms along with the few bad ones.

Instead of complete separation between banking and investing the best solution would be a series of reforms to improve the industry. New rules would require analysts to be paid solely on performance. This isnt easy to do, but new independent research firms, such as Investars and Starmine, are already springing up that track analyst performance and can be used to reward the ones that have the most accurate earnings forecasts and make clients the most money. This will discourage false reports given from dishonest analysts. Firms are also ridding themselves of bad analysts; the Association for Investment Management & Research has recently announced that they are investigating over 100 cases involving researchers and their fixed and faulty reports. These analysts will be stripped of their Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) credential, which will permanently remove them from the industry.

In conclusion, passing this law would not only change the stock and trade market, but could dangerously hurt our economy, as the stock market is already dangerously low.

One of the most asked questions that have been asked is "Why does evil exist in our society?" What would a world be like if bad things did not occur in our world and our lives? Without the occurrences of these misfortunes, how would we really know what is good about us? Without the significance of death, would life even be cherished and valued as it would be right now? Without evil villains, what would all the super heroes be doing since everything is good? Without the existence of a black and white comparison, our lives would be colorless and meaningless. The reason why evil exists in our society is to bring out its significance to distinct what is good and what is evil such as seen in the novel "Sula" by Toni Morrison so that their would be a clear understanding of how goodness exists and how it should be sought after in society.

"Sula" is a novel about the lives of the people who live in the Bottom, which is part of a city called the Medallion. The story revolves mainly around the lives and families of two girls, Nel and Sula. Sula and Nel have very different backgrounds which provide the bases of contrast and comparison of different themes. They become friends quickly and develop a close friendship bond. They encounter many events throughout their lives that bring out their differences and similarities of their personalities. The significance of their relationship is about how their different personalities fit together to form a complete unit. Through the actions of their families and themselves, the battle or balance of good and evil can be declared as a necessity for the town to survive.

The many different lifestyles that are chosen by individuals are based upon the differences that are seen between a "good" and "bad" life. Nel was raised with a conservative authority in her household taught by her mother, Helene who was raised by her grandmother, Cecile. Helene's mother, Rochelle was a Creole prostitute so her grandmother who had a higher regard of good and religious values instead raised Helene. "The grandmother took Helene away from the soft lights and flowered carpets of the Sundown House and raised her under the dole some eyes of a multicolored Virgin Mary, counseling her to be constantly on guard for any sign of her mother's wild blood" (17). Another purpose of these actions toward Helene was because Cecile wanted to avoid having a family reputation such as Sula's. Sula's mother and grandmother built a reputation being known as man lovers. They constantly have new lovers without regret or remorse. Nel's family excluding Rochelle found their moral living values by being aware of a life they would want to avoid. Without having knowledge of different lifestyles, good or evil, no course of action would be pursued in order to obtain an orderly life. The existence of evil provides the motivation and reasoning of why Helene "shielded Nel from the evils of the world in much the same way her grandmother Cecile shielded her" (pinkmonkeynotes).

The awareness of evil pushes individuals to achieve the opposite to improve upon their lives so they will not succumb to what they fear and abhor. When Sula returned back to the bottom, a series of "bad luck" followed her known as the "plague of Robbins," that's what the town claimed to be. Sula was labeled as a source of evil or evil itself because of her lifestyle. Such things she did were ruining the marriage of a couple, having white lovers, dressing unfashionably to the town and also driving away her grandmother to a nursing home. The more mishaps that occurred around the bottom, the town pointed them towards a sign of evil. "Once the source of personal misfortune was identified, they had leave to protect and love one another. They began to cherish their husbands and wives, protect their children, repair their homes and in general band together against the devil in their midst" (118). The dwelling presence of an evil source in the town created a reaction that brought out the better of the people.

Order custom research paper on Sula Essay: Good and Evil

When Sula, or the source of evil died in the town, what was thought to be a good omen became the opposite. The caution of evil faded away as well as their conviction to shield their lives with good. "mothers who had defended their children from Sula's malevolence (or who had defended their positions as mothers from Sula's scorn for the role) now had nothing to rub up against. The Tensions was gone and so was the reason for the effort they had made. Without her mockery, affection for others sank into flaccid disrepair…..Wives uncoddled their husband; their seemed no further need to reinforce their vanity" (15-154). Since the cry during a crisis vanished, their cherishment for life and other importance's faded.

Law exists because of crime and disorder. Protection exists because of danger and fear. The many good aspects of our lives exist because of the opposite, the bad and the evil. Good cannot exist without evil, evil cannot exist without good. Society is able to able to maintain it's ways because of the balance that is offered through good and evil.

A perfect society is an orderly society, not a utopia of happiness.

Human rights are the universally recognised interests, powers, liberties and entitlements associated with respect to human dignity and freedom. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights documents this definition and recognises the existence of Human rights. Since the formation of this declaration numerous treaties and declarations have branched from it developing our understanding of human rights.

International human rights have been developed over many centuries through the generation of customary international law and recently through the multilateral treaties and conventions developed specifically to address human rights issues.

International rights come in several main categories, which include civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, environmental and peace rights and collective rights to self-determination. The first two categories are the two major categories initially recognised by international law in the mid 0th Century. The next two categories are the newest wave of human rights issues, arisen as a result of the agitation by developing countries.

International human rights can only take effect through domestic law. Thus making it somewhat controversial as it imposes duties on states in relation to individuals within their own territory.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Australia and Human rights

In Australia the executive government initially needs to ratify the treaty, convention or any other international instrument. Afterwards the Australian government, or executive, followed by enactment can directly accept the international instrument in question. The parliament will then incorporate the meaning of the international treaty into the domestic legislation via common law, statutes and in the state and Commonwealth constitutions.

Where the international human rights laws aren't incorporated into the words of an Act or judicial decision the international law may be used to assist in the interpretations of statutes and constitutions.

Under Common Law it is required that Administrative decisions must take into account international conventions to which Australia is a signatory. As demonstrated in the case of the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs v Teoh (15), where the Federal court decided to grant Mr Teoh's application for residency in Australia despite his failure to meet character requirements under the Migration Act 158. The Court validated its decision by arguing that Mr Teoh's role as a father figure must be considered under the Convention on the Rights of the Child in any assessment of his application to remain in Australia.

Statute law ensures much of the Human rights protection in Australia. Various Acts concerning welfare, education, health and criminal matters have been introduced to ensure justice, fairness and equality within our society. Many of these such as the Racial discrimination Act (Cth) 175, and the Disability Discrimination Act (Cth) 1 are reflective of the human rights provisions.

Within the Australian Constitution there are stated protection's offered to individuals such as the right to vote and the right to trial by jury for serious offences.

Other avenues for protection include the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, the State and Federal Ombudsman, Privacy Commissioner, Anti-Discrimination Board, Administrative Decisions Tribunal and through the Federal Court for a full hearing of a case. Parliamentary committees and law reform bodies investigate the protection of human rights in Australia and make recommendations for change. The federal parliament's Human Rights Sub-committee established in 11, is an example of one such body.

However, there are still loopholes within the domestic system that have become evident recently, with the arousal of some delicate issues for which the government has faced harsh criticism.

The Australian public has voiced their concern about lack of protection from statute law, where some international human rights treaties have failed to become domestic law. The Commonwealth has the power to pass such legislation but it has been unwilling to interfere in what are often regarded as state matters. The Federal government's unwillingness to overturn the Northern Territory's mandatory sentencing is an example of this.

Other criticisms coming from the UN committees, aimed at the government lack of compassion for refugees and illegal immigrants and economic and social inequalities faced by ATSI people has been bluntly rejected by the government.

These criticisms have led to the suggestion that Australia should have its own bill of rights to ensure adequate protection of human rights. Another suggested reform is the creation of a single expert monitoring body in place of the current six specialist committees, and a proper resourcing of such a committee.

In conclusion it is evident that Australia has taken the first few steps in creating a democratic legal system that provides care and protection for its citizens, yet the legal system has failed many of its tests. The UN human rights system operates as some sort of safety net in the absence of a comprehensive Australian system for rights protection.

The resolution is The use of animals in scientific testing is moral. The answer is clearly defined.

What is morality? Where do we get our set of ethical standards? Is it something that we pick up off the street and adopt as our own? No, of course not. Our morality is shaped by our society. What one person would see as perfectly moral and correct might be against the others' code of standards. For this case I will use the predominant theme that can be found in all major religions. This is the Golden Rule, which states Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It can be articulated many different ways, but the meaning is the same. It shows a respect for life and also a responsibility to see that we do not harm other people.

The scientific community is one that is constantly changing. We are on the verge of tremendous breakthroughs that will save people and animals. I imagine that everyone here received a Polio immunization when they were just a baby. Yet before 155 there was not a way to prevent Polio. Children were crippled and many died each year because of that disease. In 14 J.F. Enders and his associates tested monkeys and also rodents to learn about the Polio virus. Was this immoral? Those monkeys and rats died to SAVE the lives of children. Think how many pets, dogs and cats, benefited from this. They could be assured that their little boy or girl owner would be able to run with them, and spend time with them, rather than having to sniff the ground where their friend lay buried. Think how many parents benefited from this knowing that the people that they cared about most in the world would be safe.

Let's take now the example of the heartworm tablet. If you have a dog I'm sure you're aware of the tablets that they must take monthly to prevent heartworms. They have saved a great number of dogs' lives. People are not the only beings that benefit from advances in science. Was it immoral to use animals in the tests to prove the effectiveness of these pills?

Imagine a world in which there was no more scientific testing. Right now there are 51,486 people dying from Aids, in American alone. There are half a million people dying from cancer each year. These numbers seem emotionless, but the pain that the individual people are going through must be terrible. The hope that they have, that a cure will be found, if not for themselves, then for their children, must be great. To say that there should be no more testing and that we have all of the knowledge that we need is immoral in itself.

Is it moral to let these people suffer? To watch our society weep as more and more people die of Aids and Cancer? How do you think a four year old girl will feel when her mother dies of breast cancer? Will she be glad that a Siberian mouse is still alive? How can turning our backs on this suffering be considered moral?

Within the last week a new treatment for tuberculosis was announced. This virus has killed millions over the years, and this new drug is expected to save 10 million people, people from all over the world, in the next ten years. What if animal testing had been abolished six months ago? The work of thousands of people over the years would have been wasted. We would have been so close to stopping the disease that has baffled and murdered people for hundreds of years, yet we wouldn't have been able to. We would have sentenced 10 million people to die. The use of animals in testing is both necessary and moral.

Banning animal testing would have repercussions on our economy. An entire industry would be abolished. The drug -testing industry is very important to our economy- it is an area that the United States dominates world-commerce in. It has a far above normal growth rate and it has great potential to help people. The people that are hired to work with them, the people whose lives are saved by the advances that they make.

Banning animal testing would also close the door on learning. What sort of example would we be setting for our children if we just decided that we already knew all we needed to know. Kids think that they know all they need after the 4th grade. Does this mean that they do? Of course not, and neither do we. To stop now would be ridiculous and immoral. Our medical field should have the resources that are necessary to go where no one has gone before.

To close I would like to show you these two pictures. One, my dog, Rocket. One, my brother, Asher. I love my dog Rocket dearly, more than almost everything. But, if I had to give my brother a medicine that had been untested, or give it to Rocket first, I would choose to give it to Rocket. I would do this because I couldn't feel moral about giving it to my brother without knowing what it would do to him. Testing is necessary, and testing on animals, until we find a better solution, is necessary. I am not an animal hater, by no means should we test on animals more than is absolutely necessary. I have proved to you that it is moral by a universal standard. Our obligation to protect human life and to do no harm to each other must, of necessity, be our greatest consideration. Thank you.

Concern for man himself and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors.- Albert Einstein

American annexation or Canadian confederation? This was the question that British Columbia was faced with during the 1860¡¦s. At this time, British Columbia was undergoing a great depression due to an under populated colony ruled by a very expensive government. Many argued that annexation would remedy this and turn British Columbia into a prosperous state and that confederation is only giving false promises of a great

government. The following will promote annexation over confederation stating the

pros and cons of both.

British Columbia at the time was in a financial and economical crisis. This was mainly because of the fact that the colony was being taxed into severe poverty by an extravagant and irresponsible form of government and instead of the population gradually rising, it¡¦s actually been declining for the early part of the 1860¡¦s. Land value has been cut 50% since 10 years ago and people seeking profit in an untapped market only gained tremendous losses. Another factor for the current status of the colonies is its vast distance from the home government and even longer to the mother land; England. The colony was in a dead end and the only way to run around was either annexation or confederation.Order Custom Essay on Annexation of BC to USA

Annexation seemed to be the logical choice at the time because of the fact that British Columbia was so close to the United States, from whom they did most of their trade with, there was one problem with this. Free trade hasn¡¦t been established between the United States and the colony. In fact everything that we can produce is taxed so large that with the exception of a very few insignificant articles, we have not the remotest hope of ever supplying our American neighbors. With that, the colonists felt that unless confederation could bring free trade within all of North America, Annexation is in there best interest. It offered more than confederation could. The colonists believed that once annexation took place, the island would no longer be depending on the fitful and transient excitement of gold mines and beginning mining the other minerals, which lie almost untouched, would be immediately brought to the surface of the earth, and become exports of value and prominence. Population would immediately flow into the country, and the real estate would quadruple its value in less than six months. This seemed to be a very likely event because all throughout the American pacific coast, Prosperity and success seemed to share a common bond. The Americans also saw British Columbia as a more valuable asset to themselves than it could be to Canada or Great Britain. Major General Henry, W. Halleck, Commander of the military division of the pacific wrote ; The only other remedy suggested is to extinguish by purchase and treaty with the British claim to all territory west of the Rocky Mountains. With this, included a list of reasons and specific points to how British Columbia would benefit under American rule. 1) The territory is of little value to the British Government ) That it can never be colonized by British subjects. ) That it would be or much greater value to us than the Great Britain. 4) That its transfer to us would remove all subjects of dispute and irritation on that frontier and tend to a lasting peace. 5) That such a transfer would reduce the expenses for military defense for both parties. 6) That its annexation is desired by the people of British Columbia. All these are valid and reasonable points such as number one this territory is of no value to Great Britain because for one thing, British Columbia was too far away, this would result in a minimal amount of European immigrants, trade, and understanding of the colonies crisis and policies. And Number five that such transfers would reduce the expenses for military defenses for both parties . This was true because with the pacific coast virtually controlled by only the Americans, less naval military vessels would be needed to defend the pacific and the Rocky Mountains would provide a suitable barrier between British Columbia and the rest of Canada.

Confederation, however did offer some benefits to British Columbia, such as a railroad that was promised to be built within 15-0 years. On the other hand ¡K Americans would already have coast to coast railways and one would end up in New Westminster. Confederation also promises a responsible government who will look at the peoples needs. But this seemed highly impossible mainly because British Columbia was such a minority when compared to the rest of Canada and its great distance from Ottawa. The people of the colony were afraid that they may be abandoned at any time. And that the benefits of the larger provinces of Canada, will always take precedence of those in British Columbia. The Colonists knew that change was inevitable, but they wanted to change for the better instead of changing the name of the government but remaining no different than before.

Overall, annexation was the more favorable choice for British Columbia¡¦s future. It offered all that confederation could and then some. Such as better economical support like free trade with the rest of the United States, a railroad system, and a better form of government. All of which would lead British Columbia into a prosperous and bright future.

The debate between dualists and physicalists is one of especially interesting qualities. A dualist is a philosopher that believes that the human mind consists of two very distinct, individual and intertwined pieces. One piece is the physical brain. Chemical reactions and electrical impulses course through the brain in order to produce sensations through the body. Combined with these physical characters is a soul, or an organism that interprets these impulses in the brain. According to the dualist, it is the soul that creates the individual and unique sensations inside your brain. On the other hand, a physicalist would argue that the experiences occurring in the brain, are nothing more than that, physical impulses. You taste the chocolate, the brain interprets the different impulses, the taste is created, and that is that. Nothing further, no soul involved, nothing more elaborate than the brain.

Physicalists argue that explanations for tastes and brain functions will be explained through scientific research, such as atomic structures and chemical makeups have been researched and proven through science, in essence saying that physicalists have no theory for their beliefs, rather they choose to wait for science to verify their beliefs. On the other hand, a dualist replies to such an argument that those processes of science would not provide a necessary answer to the dilemma. A dualist points out that the two processes are completely different. On the one hand, when a scientist breaks down the chemical makeup of a substance, he does only that, understands what makes up that particular material. There is no explanation as to the cause of a particular taste, feel, or view of the object. Why does it look the way it does to me [the dualist]? Why does it affect my [the dualist] taste buds in this way?

Both arguments make very valid points, however I tend to lean towards Nagel's approach that perhaps there is no soul, but that the brain has something more than just a physical process inside of it, that it operates on a mental plane (pg. 4). This would explain the learned approach to certain situations. When you experience something that causes pain, your brain creates a reaction that tells your body it's hurt. However, how is it that we learn to avoid the action that brought us pain? Leaning towards Nagel's non-soul/mental observation, perhaps the brain does operate on a level other than strictly physical. This would explain how schools of fish, or dolphins learn to defend themselves against sharks, while humans combine to form powerful nations in order to provide themselves with security and whatnot.

The brain is a very complex organism, and it's true operations are still a mystery to man. Both physicalists and dualists provide valid arguments as to their though processes, however, neither sit completely well with me, and I tend to lean towards a physical organism that operates on more than one plane; on a physical plane as well as a mental one.Custom Essays on Dualism and Skepticism Overviews

Skepticism, from what I'm gathering, is the equivalent to that immature little brother we all know and have to love. The arguments of a skeptic are virtually the same as those of a child. "Nuh uh." "How do you know?" "Why is that?" "So what?" "And?" It is a mass of mindless arguments that there seems to be no answer to.

According to Nagel, a skeptic is someone who believes that "You can't know on the basis of what's in your mind that there's no world outside it." "There may or may not be an external world, and if there is it may or may not be completely different from how it seems to you there's no way for you to tell." When approached with the argument that there must be some form of external causes to explain our experiences, they counter by saying that these "experiences" are unclear to a person because they have never been experienced directly. All experiences are taken in through observation by the mind.

Therefore the argument stands that the mind might still be creating the world you believe you are in. This leaves you without any concept for comparison. As Nagel put it "Impressions and appearances that do not correspond to reality must be contrasted with others that do correspond to reality, or else the contrast between appearance and reality is meaningless." He then goes on to say "He is kidding himself, because it couldn't be true that the physical world doesn't really exist, unless somebody could observe that it doesn't exist."

Skepticism therefore seems to fall to the views of verificationism. Verificationism allows the establishment of ideas through comparisons of what we are familiar with. Skeptics believe that the mind is something prone to miscommunication of what it observes; thereby allowing reality to be completely different from what it takes in. This view is somewhat far fetched, because at the same time that it says the brain mistakes what it sees, it attempts to claim that the brain creates all you see. So you are faced with an absent minded professor. Brilliant in his ideas, with no idea what he is saying. This sort of contradiction tends to make skepticism a harder view to listen to as well as accept.
