Dark Ground

Stephen Mullins

As the elevator groaned wearily to life, the last remnants of light disappeared as I slowly descended down the mile and half squared tube cut into the side of the mountain. Slowly descending into the endless dark void, with the mine lights glowing like stars in the night sky, I silently said a prayer that I would make this journey safely to the bottom. This dismal journey was one of the few trips I ever made into a coalmine and I will never go back.

I was always told since my childhood that mining coal was a hard and treacherous job that took a special sort of man to do. It didn't take long for me to figure out that I'm not that kind of man. When the rusty, worn out elevator finally stuttered to a stop at the face of the mine was when the reality of being under thousands upon thousands of tons of raw mountain finally hit home. The thought of coal pillars the size of toothpicks compared to the enormous weight of the mountain, as the only thing keeping me from being pulverized into a bloody pancake scared the hell out of me.Order custom research paper on dark cloud

While walking through the long, dark, and damp corridor I looked around the ribs of the coal seams. The ribs were sweating profusely with water as a little stream settled at the base of the seam. As I glanced serenely at the sweating walls I remembered all the tales of miners hitting underground supply of water sending torrents of water and mud spewing through the caverns of the mine. Nothing to me could have been worse than to be washed like a dirty load of clothes in a gigantic washing machine. The deadening roar of lumbering machinery soon brought my mind back to reality and to the fact that this was not a dream.

The machinery at the face of the mine hungrily ate away at anything that dared to oppose its awesome power. Any piece of machinery in the mining operation could easily mane or kill the unsuspecting miner. A continuous miner with its long cylindrical toothed drum has the capability of turning a miner into a compost heap. Many miners have lost arms, even their lives to the deadly roof bolter. Scoops racing around the mine are known to accidentally run over a working miner seriously wounding him. The thought of being electrocuted by one of these machines ran throughout my mind while repairing one of these.

Every piece of equipment in a coalmine runs off of 1700 volts of direct current. The possibility of electrocution weighed heavily on my mind every minute I was repairing a piece of equipment. The nearest power disconnects for any piece of machinery was located back at the elevator shaft. It was all to easy for someone to come along and turn the power back on lighting you up like a roman candle on the fourth of July just as you began to splice into the feeder cable of the piece of equipment. Thousands of miners through out the years met their untimely demise do to electrocution during repair of their equipment.

Even when the miner reached the ripe old age of retirement in the mines his life was cut short by black lung. Black lung is a disease that effectively attacks the lungs of the miner leaving him dependant upon artificial respiration until he dies. This disease has cut short the lives of many members of my family and friends. Nothing is sadder than watching a once strong, proud, and independent person gasping for their breath.

Edith Napier, an Eastern Kentucky poet and author, stated the plight of the coal miner with the poem "Blue Diamond Coal Mines". Blue Diamond you are so blue, We thought you were so true, We loved you with all our might, You robbed our life, Like a thief in the night, They called you Black Gold, So we are told, We loved you in the day, We loved you in the night, As the top came down, They were sorrow all around, Blue Diamond when you closed, The old miners couldn't breathe, We all stilled greaved. In a way this poem symbolizes a lot of the reasons I turned my back on the eastern Kentucky coalmines and, in a sense, my childhood home with all the good and bad memories. Throughout the years spent in childhood, I have seen both grand parents fight and loose battles with black lung disease, all of my uncles become disabled at a young age due to mining accidents, and cousins and friends die tragically in the mines. These are the reasons that I left the only place I truly call home.
