Characters

Like people in real life, fictional characters reveal themselves by how they look,

what they say and how they say it, what they do, as well as how they feel. The two characters in "Mabel" and "The Horse Dealer's Daughter", George and Jack, reveal themselves, in most of the story, by

how they feel. In spite of being different, both men have something in common how

and what they feel towards their own Mabel.

George escapes from Mabel because he doesn't want to marry her. In a similar way,

Jack refuses to accept he is in love with Mabel. But both men end up marrying their

own Mabel. They feel the same under some circumstances both feel afraid and

nervous. When George, is about to meet Mabel, after seven years, he realizes he is

not prepared to marry her "Then, suddenly, without warning, he was afraid. He had

not seen Mabel for seven years... He felt a terrible sinking in his stomach, and his

knees began to shake. He couldn't do it." And Jack feels that way when he is in the

house with Mabel "He was amazed, bewildered and afraid." "He was afraid, even a

little horrified."

What causes them to behave as they do?

George behaves in such a cowardly way, escaping from her, because he had not

seen Mabel for seven years and that causes him fear and insecurity. That's why he

avoids answering every letter she sends to him, because of the fact that he feels

pressured by Mabel, and because of that he escapes from her.

Jack escapes from Mabel, but in a different way. He escapes from his own feelings

towards Mabel. He has never fallen in love, and that feeling fills him with

nervousness and fear "He had no intention of loving her; his whole will was against

his yielding. It was horrible."

Although, at first, George and Jack have a strong resistance to accept they love their

own Mabel, both end realizing that they are in love with them. It can be seen, when

George is in the club (at the beginning of the story), that he really love his wife

"He's so terribly miserable since his wife went home." "It must be very pleasant for

her to know that her husband loves her as much as that."

At last Jack finally accepts he loves Mabel "And again, from the pain of his breast,

he knew how he loved her. He went and bent to kiss her, gently, passionately, with

his heart's painful kiss." He loves her in such a way that he asks her to marry him

"I want you, I want to marry you, we're going to be married, quickly, quickly

tomorrow if I can."

Despite their early fear and resistance, both George and

Jack finally give vent to their emotions, and behave

freely, express what they feel, and admit their love.

Outside my academics, I have chosen to live a majority of my life dancing. On average, I dance 17 hours a week. Dance has become a very important part of who I am, and has shaped me in many ways. I feel that when I decided seven years ago to start dancing, I gave myself the opportunities to experience life's lessons in a whole other aspect. I have benefited a great deal from dance that I feel will help me throughout life. It has bestowed upon me many characteristics organization and time management skills, motivation and dedication, focus and discipline, and lastly team and leadership skills.

For the past three years, I have chosen to be involved in many activities school, work, and my favorite, dance. After 0 hours of school, 10 hours of studying, 0 hours of work a week, I still manage to have my fun and dance. Every morning before school I wake up at 545 to attend a two-hour mandatory dance practice for my schools' team. I also go to a dance studio in my local town and dance on their team for 6 hours a week. I do this because in order to do what I love and achieve the physical and spiritual happiness I have to make some choices in how I spend my time. I have to manage my time with school, studying to keep up my .8 GPA, work, and still dance. Consequently, I sometimes have to put my social life at the bottom of my importance list. I feel the management skills I have learned will help me greatly as I approach my college adventure for I am quite aware of the many things that will be thrown at me, and the many tasks I am going to have to juggle while acquiring my education.

Motivation and dedication are some of the many attributes gained through dance. When being apart of any team there are times of failure, times when an individual is brought down and feels like he or she is at their very end, and times when one wants to give up and stop caring. At times like this, motivation and dedication are what helps them push through their difficulties. Motivation and dedication are there to remind he or she what they are doing and why they are there. Because in life, there are no short cuts to any place worth going. Therefore in dance, I do it because it is who I am and what I love to do. Dance has also motivated me to become a better person. It has motivated me to follow more of a straight and narrow pathway to success, instead of being distracted by negative influences. I feel that with these attributes I am already one step ahead of others, who have not yet experienced this, which in turn will help me greatly in college. Being dedicated to something so much means putting it first. Not only in your heart and head, but also with your everyday living. You can accomplish this by prioritizing what you need to do versus what you want to do. All together with the greatest lesson, I have learned to never give up no

matter what obstacles lay in my path. "Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go around it, or work through it." -Michael Jordan.Order Custom Essay on College admission paper

In part with motivation and dedication comes focus and discipline. In any thing you do in life, you should have goals. Goals are a point of satisfaction toward something which effort is directed. People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It is important to have goals to keep you on track. Goals also help with what is expected of you in what you are taking part of, whether it is dance, football, choir, or the chess club. It takes generous amounts of focus to keep that goal in mind. Discipline is also a key factor in achieving that goal. There are many forms of discipline. Through dance, discipline takes a big part starting with your body and the way you take care of it. This includes all aspects among the obvious of not drinking, smoking, or the use of illegal substances. Many other forms of discipline include eating right to get the needed amount of energy, getting enough sleep to maintain your body's physical wellness, and the conditioning of your body's bones and muscles to prevent injury. Dance has taught me to become very disciplined and focus, but most importantly to use that discipline and focus, and channel it towards the tasks at hand. In school, it is my work and grades, at home, it is my family, and soon to be in college with the new responsibilities I am going to face.

In college, team and leadership skills are very crucial. This last year in dance I was chosen to be captain for my team. I feel the responsibilities of being a captain have helped me prepare for college in many ways. When placed in a leadership position of a team you are faced with many more responsibilities, and your expectations are set higher than others are. You are the one that holds the team together. They count on you to do your job. When times get tough, you are the motivator for the team. You cannot show frustration and weakness in any form. I have not only been on a team through dance, but at work and in my home as well. Anytime there is a group of people working together to achieve one common goal that is a team. When I think of a team one phrase comes to mind, "There is no "I" in TEAM!" When apart of a team you are not working for yourself. You are working for the benefit of the team. Seeking the medical degree that I am, I feel strong personal skills is what's needed to take the initiative and lead any team. Most importantly to fulfill the job requirements successfully.

All together dance has influenced me greatly and is the one choice I made in my childhood that has benefited me the most. Dance has taught me organization, time management, motivation, dedication, focus, discipline, team, and leadership skills that are all very important skills needed for college.

Since working in news, I've seen a lot of stories about a lot of people doing a lot of things and I often say to myself, "people need to study God's word and ask Him for understanding."

In their "responsibility to inform the public and maintain an objective opinion" the station covered a protest on the "Domestic Partners Bill." As a single adult Christian hoping to marry someday, this bothered me.

For those of you who don't know, should this bill pass in Connecticut, homosexual (gay) couples would be granted the same rights as heterosexual couples, thus leading to the legalization of gay marriages. This law has already passed in Vermont. The fact that such legislation exists is truly a sign of the times.

At the demonstration, there were gay protestors with signs saying, "God is Love," "Judge not, less you be judged," and "Love makes a family." Non-gay and Christian protestors held signs saying, "AIDS was created by God to purge the gays" and "God caused Sept. 11." Say what?Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Commentary

But in all the stories we've covered, why did this one get my attention?

The fact that the gays used the Word of God to justify a position that is contrary to the Word of God tickled me. I was then troubled that the Christians didn't use the opportunity to speak the Truth.

The Lord sent me to Proverbs 14, verse 1 of the New International Version that

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

He then pointed me to Timothy , verses 1 5 & 7 of the NIV

But mark this There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them…. [They are] always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.

Why use this space in this forum to express my discomfort?

Because the devil is a liar!

The woman is God's gift to man. In spite of the messages that we see on television and read in the newspapers, God established the family in the beginning.

The Lord sent me to Proverbs 141 to remind me that the devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. If he can convince Mankind that two members of the same sex can live together as one, then he has stolen, killed and destroyed the true meaning of family.

When society tries to convince us that wrong is right and vice versa, we need not cower away and swallow what is being fed whether it's B.C. or 00 A.D. We as Christians have an even greater "responsibility to inform the public" of what thus say the Lord.

I wanted so desperately to say to all the protestors that, yes, God is Love, but "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth (1 Corinthians 16 NIV)."

And that's all I have to say about that.

Kenya is a country that has nine provinces. It lies on the

equator on the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Nyamben Mountain Range. It

covers an area of ,850 square miles. The climate of Kenya is one of short

rains between March and May, with a long rainy season between October andBuy cheap Kenya term paper

December. Temperatures range from 68 degrees in the higher altitudes

around Mt. Kenya, to 0 degrees in the arid Semiaro lands.

The people of Kenya hold a proud tradition of farming. Ninety

percent of the people are farmers. The population is large and spread out

covering both the dry, arid lands as well as the fertile areas. Crops

grown fit the type of area of land in which they are cultivated.

Livestock and beekeeping are other methods of farming popular in eastern

Africa. Wheat is grown in the upper and lower Highlands. Pyrethrum,

potatoes, maize, beans and tea are other crops that grow in the area.

Farmers grow substance crops to feed their family as well as to sell for

cash. The livestock are kept for dairy products used in the home. Maize,

fodder beets, and napiergrass are grown to feed livestock.

In 1880 changes were brought to Kenya from British Columbia. In

16, Kenya won its independence. Their independence brought about a

change in the economy. Prior to the separation, Kenya was forced to give

profits to Britain. Independence provided changes in the relationship

between the people and their land. The introduction of cash crops changed

the Meru farming systems. The Ameru people could not produce enough of

the cash crops and still have enough left to support their families. For

the first time, they were forced to pay taxes. To prevent the exhaustion

of the land, the people developed new methods of farming. By rotating the

crops, larger profits could be made.

The people of the Kenya/Ameru tribe came from the area around the

Niger River in West Africa. They traveled through the Congo Basin up to

Kantanga, where they moved toward the eastern part of Kenya. The Ameru

arrived at Mt. Kenya as a single group. Originally they settled around

Mt. Kenya. When the people began to migrate into eastern Kenya, the

Koomenjave or Spiritual Leader divided the Ameru into three groups. The

Koomenjave was responsible for keeping law and order. He was in political

control of all of the groups within the Ameru Tribe. In addition to

governmental power, the Koomenjave was the one who set down the social

order as well. Elders were to be treated with total respect. He realized

that the people must work well together to be successful in their farming

ventures.

Today the Ameru are a simple people. They farm without the

sophisticated technology that the farmers of the United States are privy

to. They are not a wealthy nation, but they are successful in what they

do. The tribesman work hard. The family works hard. Their needs are

fulfilled because of the strong work ethic. Despite the lack of education

and modern ways of life, the people of the Ameru Tribe, have built a

successful farming community

In Atwood's "This is a Photograph of Me", the speaker is almost begging to be searched for and almost mocking the reader that looks. In an old distorted photograph, no figure below the water will ever be found. Interpreting this poem in light of the woman poet's torn identity, the speaker is a drowned 'Society's Woman' gone poet. The poet is pointing out in the background fragments of her domestic life (the house), and is indeed drowning in a typically feminine archetype, water, which distorts the speaker. The speaker goes on to tell us that of her marginality as an artist in telling us that one cannot tell where or how big or small she is (even though she is the center), leaving the reader to realize she will never be recognized.

Though not as upfront as Atwood, Levertov presents a similar picture of polarity in her poem, "Hypocrite Women". In the structure of the poem, too, the men women protect and council are on the other side of the spectrum from a woman considering her own dreams. Unfortunately for the women Levertov is admonishing, supporting men comes first. Levertov is also pointing out that these women's image of themselves comes from men's opinions about them or their body, or a man's ideal image of femininity (often society's ideal image as well) they are trying to fulfill. This is symbolized by the vagina the man in the poem thinks is ugly and the women's inability to defend it because what men say and how they feel holds much, too much weight for them.

In her poem "My Trouble", Diane Wakoski faces the dilemma not of back burning for a man per se but of 'keeping her place' because it is what is expected by society as a whole. Wakoski's trouble is that she has the spirit to go out and take the world as a courageous woman, but she mockingly tells us all she can do is sew and cook. This shows the deviation between what she would like to spend her life as a woman and how society tells her she can. Perhaps the deviant and splendorous variations of sewing and cooking Wakoski finds are modeled after things she would like to be doing instead of these societally deemed 'women tasks'. Because she is a woman, Wakoski is "usually taken for somebody's secretary" and for a woman who wants more from the world than what social standards will give her, to be mistaken for a secretary is a painful insult. Perhaps she is poor and has nothing to say because our culture would not let women earn money (and still unequally) or speak up. Wakoski's "My Trouble' shows conflict of Women Vs. Culture, Levertov's "Hypocrite Woman" shows conflict of Women's selves Vs. Male neediness and expectations and Atwood's, "This is a Photograph of Me" illustrates the conflict between Women Vs. Artist or Women Vs. Success.

This essay will be finding the similarities in ideas of love between Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "Sonnets From The Portuguese, XIV" and William Shakespeare's "Sonnet 10." They both have the theme that you should not look at a person for what they are, but for who they are, and love them rather than their looks, mannerisms, and general outward appearance, "Do not say 'I love her for her smile - her look," and "I love to hear her speak, yet well I know that music hath a far more pleasing sound." Shakespeare is also saying in the last quote that to love someone truly you must be able to put up with their imperfections, as no one is perfect.

This is what these two poems have in common in their philosophies on love, they have both realised that you can love someone for their looks, but this approach is often ridden with heart-break, and to really love someone, and have a long lasting relationship, one should look at the object of affection's personality rather than their outward appearance, "As any she belied with false compare."

There is a slight difference in the views on the opposite sex, as the two writers are not of the same sex, and also from different time periods (William Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning from 1806 to 1861). It may seem that while Shakespeare is definitely in love in Sonnet 10, he often talks about his mistress, with almost a feeling of ownership, and is obviously comfortable with pointing out her imperfections, "My mistress," and "the breath that from my mistress reeks." While this may show that Shakespeare is truly in love, I'm sure his mistress wouldn't be very happy about the way he is talking about her. In Sonnets from the Portuguese XIV on the other hand, Browning never once talks of her "beloved" in any way insulting, save about what he should say and not say, which may show either a submission to the traditional chauvinist male view that the male of a relationship is the superior member, which was common in at that period of time, or she thinks to highly of her "beloved" to want to insult him. Shakespeare on the other hand may not hold this kind respect for his mistress, for instance he calls her his "mistress" more times than his "love," expressing that he may feel some sense of ownership over her rather than a mutual respect. This respect does not seem to appear in Sonnets from the Portuguese XIV, as the comments Browning says to her "beloved," are laced with reasons why he should love her for herself and not her looks, so as not to upset him if he thought she was correcting his behaviour, "Be changed, or change for thee and love, so wrought, may be unwrought so."

Sonnets from the Portuguese XIV is trying to show the reader that the person they are in love with may not always look as they do, nor act like they do, and so the reader should look at them from a long term perspective, "Beloved, may Be Changed, or change for thee and love, so wrought may be unwrought so," meaning love of a persons looks may suddenly be staunched if the person looses those looks. In a similar way, Shakespeare is saying in Sonnet 10 that you should not compare people's features to others, as long as you love that person's features, it does not matter, "I think my love is rare, As any she belied with false compare."Custom writing service can write essays on Comparing Sonnets 130 and Sonnets From the Portuguese VII

Both poems are also saying that an individual may have seen better than what they behold before them in their love, yet this method of falling in love, of searching for imperfections in someone you love, is fated with mishap "If hair be wires, black wires grow on her head." Rather than this it is much better to love the person for who they are, and accept them for who and what they are, "My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground." The last quote sums up Shakespeare's Sonnet 10, showing that he doesn't 'worship' his mistress like some sort of deity, and is aware of the fact that she is only human, and therefore isn't perfect. Although if she read this poem she might think he was too aware.

Sonnet 10 was obviously not for it's subjects eyes, as she would probably not feel too happy once Shakespeare had pointed out all of her flaws, "If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun." I think it was more of an advisory to those looking for advice about love, showing them that if they spend all their life looking for the perfect person to fall in love with then they will get no where, as no one is perfect. Sonnets from the Portuguese XIV also seems to be aimed at giving advice to others. While it may have been intended for it's subjects eyes, it says that you should love someone for who they are not what they are, "If thou must love me, let it be for nought Except for love's sake only," and so carries the same theme as Sonnet 10 in that it is telling you not to look at imperfections in your beloved, and rather look at them as a whole. Both poems are showing you in an advisory manner reasons why you should fall in love, and shows reasons why you shouldn't do so.

In conclusion, both poems carry a heavy theme that you shouldn't go through life looking for a perfect partner, as you will never find one because no one is perfect, and you may also find that the people you don't think are right for you are, because all you are doing is looking at their imperfections rather than their whole self and personality. This is shown in Sonnets from the Portuguese XIV by Elizabeth Barrett Browning lines like, "and love, so wrought, may be unwrought so," and in William Shakespeare's Sonnet 10 with quotes such as, "My Mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground."
