The marriage of Ann and John is not that strong. This stems from two differences in opinion. John believes that to please his wife he must work hard all day and pay the bills so she can eventually have all the nice things she wants. Ann, on the other hand, would like John to spend more time with her in stead of slaving away over the farm. Johns leaving for his father's house puts additional stress on the marriage. It is then that Ann has time to think about their relationship. The storm also contributes to Ann's feelings of loneliness and despair. The blame for their weak relationship falls on John for not paying enough attention to her.

John is a slow, unambitious man, content with his farm and cattle, and naively proud of Ann. We know this because the author tells us in the exposition. He is also very hard working. He demonstrates this quality by his unwillingness to take on a hired man. This might also be taken as John just being cheap and not wanting to pay another man for work. He is a very devoted husband to Ann. We know this because everything he does is for her, whether directly or indirectly. He works like a dog all day long to make money to pay off the mortgage so that in the future Ann can have all the nice things she wants. He also shows his love for her by coming back through the storm just to be with her. At the end when John catches Ann with Steven he isn't sure what to do. He finally decides to kill him self so Ann can be happy with the one she truly loves, Steven. John is an all around good guy.

At the beginning of the story we see that Ann is not happy with her life. We see this by her attitude towards John when he says that he will go to his father's house for the day. "Plenty to eat plenty of wood to keep me warm what more could a woman ask for?", this passage shows just how unhappy she is. She is also a very lonely woman. We know this because she tells John that she gets lonely when he leaves. It is this loneliness that drives her to commit adultery. Ann also feels that she is unimportant to John because he frequently leaves her alone in the house. Ann still wants to act like a young person. We see this when she is thinking to herself while John is gone. She thinks they should wait to pay off the mortgage for a while and do things now before they are to old to enjoy them. After Ann sleeps with John she feels really bad. She shows this by crying in bed after she commits the act. She realizes then that John is the only one for her, but by then John is dead.

Ann is the most to blame for everything that happened. It is true that John didn't pay much attention to her but Ann never told him how she felt so they had no chance of working it out. If she would have told him that she wanted to spend more time with him I'm sure John would have been happy to do so. She brings on her own depression by not telling him her true feelings. She is also to blame for John's suicide. It was her choice to sleep with Steven; John did not do anything to provoke it.Custom writing service can write essays on Ann and John

Racism

Introduction

According to ICERD (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) racism is defined as "Any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on race, color, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment, or exercise, on equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, or any other field of public life." Keeping this definition in mind, the following web site http//globalissues.org/HumanRights/Racism.asp gives us the details of racial discrimination in various countries, from Europe to the Middle East to Asia, including the tyranny of Adolph Hitler. Based on the region, the website is divided into segments. It is very concise in its approach at describing the events, which gives the reader a fair view of what to expect in the given segment.

Analysis on the Impact of Racism

Buy cheap Racism and Inequality term paper

Racism may not be practiced as openly today but still does exist in our day to day lives. A very simple example could be that of a shake hand. It is a show of confidence and respect to shake someone's hand firmly when you greet them. In some cases people would just tough their finger tips. I generally wonder if they shake hands like that with everyone or is it just that they have other issues running in their minds. What ever the reason, a sort of uncomfortable feeling crosses my mind. Often times, I have wondered if this is racism, and I am on the receiving end.

This is a very simple, and probably not a very strong example. This may be just my point of view. Nevertheless, there are other issues that are much more grievous and undesirable. A Bangladeshi community was bombed in London where seven people were injured. Such hatred is of no consequence. People should realize that human life is invaluable, once lost can never be replaced. Also, how can one human be the judge of others? No other human can think he/she is superior to the other just because of the color of their skin or ethnicity.

Thus, people who are "different" would definitely feel out of place in case they are treated disrespectfully.

Conclusion

The website describes the various events and occurrences in all parts of the world, thus covering global racism. This gives us a good overview of what is happening and where it's happening. The only difficulty is analyzing why it's happening and when it is all going to end. There may not be a direct solution for such a global problem. One approach could be that of awareness acquired through education. People should respect one another.

It is not enough to just preach about equality, it should be practiced and advocated. By adopting this policy, it would be possible to reach out to everyone.

The web site does a good job of capturing the various aspects of racism. It elaborates by giving hyperlinks all throughout the article without having the trouble of scrolling down the page to look up the references. Also, the author updates his home page which tells us that he is up to date with the latest happenings. His detailed analysis supported by newspaper articles and other links, gives us the authenticity of

Patriarchy Gets Funky

In the early ninties student bodies rallied against the social injustice that was occurring amongst their academic community. Riots arose over things that have now become part of a manipulative marketing scheme for corporate industries. Same sex issues, racism and sexism were a few of the many problems that these intellectuals were fighting against. Unfortunately "personal politics" consumed most activists, letting the real problem slip out of reach.

Initially trying to subvert the images that were being exhibited in magazines, television shows and advertisements seemed like the right thing to do. Eventually striving for a better social environment fell victim to it's own narcissism.Buy cheap Chapter Five Patriarchy Gets Funky term paper

Mainstream enemies didn't feel a threat towards these activist, they accepted them with open arms, dissected the occurrences and used them to their advantage.

Niche marketing strategies arose and schools of new cutting edge imagery were produced. If this was what the public wanted this was what the public was going to get. The changes that occurred after these demonstrations were not a result of a victoriously fought war of equality and justice, but a marketing scheme for more profit. This suppressed society was now subconsciously turned into a dominant group of consumers. The identity politics they once rallied for was now a feeding troth for advertisers. By trying to kill the monster of supremacy they made them stronger. Gays and lesbians became new ad campaigns. Feminists became logos on T shirts that were produced by young women in third world war countries for unreasonable wages, which in turn demeaned the basic principals of feminism. Selling atypical Diversity had become a full throttle sales pitch, and the western civilization was buying into it.

Consumed by the promises, colors and antics, the youth of today becomes the leading target market in this global promotion scheme. Because the youth is more culturally absorbed it makes it easier for marketers to advertise, not only through ads and commercialism but also through the youth, which affects direct family members. Physiological marketing schemes are making chicken Mc Nuggets the epiphany of nutrition within the youth culture. The Economy is positioned where it is because of demographics. The youth culture is the bulls eye target market of the present and the future.

Hester Prynne's Battle

The seventeenth century is a time of punishment and death to those who do not conform to Puritan laws. The young, tall, and beautiful Hester Prynne lives in this intolerable culture in Boston, Massachusetts. In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne battles society and revealed sin, and emerges as a capable, respectable woman.

In this novel Hawthorne sees Hester as a victim for several reasons. Hester is a victim to her youth because she lives in an age where she is forced to marry without love. In England, Hester's family is wealthy, but they lose their money, so her parents arrange for her to marry a scholar, Roger Chillingsworth. Hester is forced to marry this man so she will survive. She does not commit to him on her own accord. Chillingsworth marries the young and passionate Hester knowing she did not return his love. Roger admits she is unsuitable for him saying, " I a man of thought…what had I to do with youth and beauty like thine own! (Hawthorne 71). He knows he is not suited for the role of her husband, but selfishly he takes advantage of this situation.

Hester faces further adversity in Boston with Chillingworth's acts of stupidity, and her lover's weakness. Baym describes her situation by writing, "She was sent to Massachusetts in advance of her husband; he had decided to emigrate, not she" (64). Hester is a victim to Roger's stupidity because he sends his wife to the colony while he remains in Amsterdam. Chillingsworth fails to realize the colony is a dangerous place for anyone, especially a young woman. Also after falling in love with Dimmesdale, she suffers from his weakness because he is unprepared to be a husband or a father. Arthur does not have the strength to claim responsibility for Pearl, so he leaves all the blame for Hester. His decisions leave him with an enormous amount of grief, and a terrible burden for her to face alone.Order Custom Hester Prynne Analysis paper

Through Hester's dilemmas and her revealed sin she becomes a stronger person who lives through truth. Baym writes describing her, "So strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength" (66). She learns from her sin, and she grows strong as a result of accepting her punishment. She fully acknowledges her sin, and boldly displays it to the world. Hester's salvation lies in truth because she embroiders her symbol with elaborateness, and she wears the scarlet A long after she could have removed it. Hester proclaims to Dimmesdale, "Truth was the one virtue which I might have held fast, and did hold fast, through all extremity" (Hawthorne 10). Even though Hester is a victim she turns herself into a woman who helps others, and is respected by them.

Hester Prynne is a courageous woman who battles society and revealed sin, and emerges as a capable, respectable woman in The Scarlet Letter. When times are plagued with trouble for Hester she does not cower down, but she stays dedicated. She does not let any barriers keep her from remaining a model citizen.

Should Israel be Muslim or Jewish?

That's a very interesting question, however I am unable to make this decision because I believe that neither of these two religions give those people the hope for the future that is found in the bible.

I feel the question that is more relevant is "How can a person (not a nation) know which religion is right?" The best way to do this is to consider seriously the following questions about religion.

1) On what are its teachings based? Are they from god or are they largely from men? The Bible says at Timothy 16, 17- All scriptures are inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

For Example the bible does not teach that the human soul is immortal, to the contrary the Bible says at Ecclesiastes 5 "For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten".

) Consider whether it is making known the name of God.

Jesus said in prayer to god "I made your name manifest to the men you gave me out of the world"(John 176) Also Jesus declared "It is Jehovah your god you must worship and to him alone you must render sacred service"(Matt 410). Has your religion taught you that 'it is Jehovah you must worship'? Have you come to know the Person identified by that name-his purposes, his activities, his qualities-so that you can confidently draw close to him?

) Is it largely ritualistic or is it a way of life?

God strongly disapproves of religion that is merely formalism. (Isa. 115-17) True religion upholds the Bible's standard of morality and clean speech instead of weakly going along with popular trends. (1 Cor. 5-1; Eph. 5-5) Its members reflect the fruits of God's spirit in their lives. So, those who adhere to true worship can be identified because they sincerely endeavor to apply Bible standards in their lives not only at their places of meeting but in their family life, at their secular work, in school, and in recreation.

4) Do its members truly love one another?

Jesus said "By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you truly have love among yourselves." (John 15) Such love reaches across racial, social, and national boundaries drawing people together in genuine brotherhood. So strong is this love that it sets them apart as being truly different. When the nations go to war, who have enough love for their Christian brothers in other lands that they refuse to take up arms and kill them? That is what early Christians of the first Century did and is what true Christians continue to do today.

So in answer to the question, "Should Israel be Muslim or Jewish", I believe each person has the right to choose their own religion, because after all their everlasting future depends on it. The Bible is a precious gift from God. It is like a letter from a loving father to his children. It tells us the truth about God - who he is and what he stands for. It explains how to cope with problems and how to find true happiness. The Bible alone tells us what we must do to please God. Psalm 11-; Isaiah 4817, 18.

Two Fathers and Two Sons

In the two poems ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± by Theodore Roethke (page 1) and ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± by Robert Hayden (page ) father is the main character. Roethke¡¯s poem ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± portrays the scene of a rough dance between father and son. The poem, ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is about the memory of a father rising up early on cold Sunday mornings to warm the rooms. Both poems portray a man¡¯s childhood memories with his father though in different styles.

The first poem ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz,¡± is in a conventional form which has four stanzas with each stanza consist of four lines. For example, in ¡°The whiskey on your breath/could make a small boy dizzy; /But I hung on like death/Such waltzing was not easy.¡± words ¡°breath¡±, ¡°death¡± and ¡°dizzy¡±, ¡°easy¡± rhyme, and so on in the following stanzas. Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is written in the free verse style. ¡°Free verse is just what it says it is, poetry that is written without proper rules about form, rhythm, meter, etc.¡± (Free Verse Lesson 4) It is ¡°to create new rhythm-as the expression of new moods-and not to copy old rhythm.¡± (VI) Hayden showed his feeling with an image of father rising up early on Sunday morning, and warming the room for his family.

¡°Imagination can use the simplest diction, because it has got the truth found what can appeal to the right mind of man, because it is strong in life, thought and language. Rich poetic vocabulary is then unnecessary.¡±(50) both poems here have present clear pictures of their childhood. In ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡±, ¡°Whiskey¡± on father¡¯s breath is one of many clues that this is actually not real Waltz and ¡°his dance is more a romp through the house with a stop in the kitchen and another at the boy¡¯s bedroom, where presumably he is unceremoniously dumped into bed.¡±(Page 14) We can see the disapproval from mother¡¯s ¡°countenance¡± which ¡°could not unfrown itself¡±. But she does nothing to stop them, so we can imagine that they all enjoy this. ¡°Then you waltzed me off to bed/Still clinging to your shirt¡± such simple words leads us to the unconditional love of the small boy. While the ¡°Tactile images of heat and cold inform Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± in which the speaker¡¯s father wakes up early ¡°in the blue black cold¡± to make ¡°banked fires blaze.¡±¡± (Page 6) He does his duty silently, and tried to support his family. But ¡°no one ever thanked him¡±, and his home is still plagued by ¡°chronic angers¡±. What a touching image! The image in Hayden¡¯s poem is somewhat more ¡°cold¡±.Cheap Custom Essays on Two Fathers and Two Sons

¡°The tone of a poem, like the tone of our speech, implies the speaker¡¯s attitude(s) towards the poem¡¯s subject. The speaker¡¯s attitude can sometimes be subtly expressed, and we need to carefully study the poem¡¯s wording; rhythm and images to understand the tone.¡±(lyric.htm) so that¡¯s why I compare the tone in the end. There are different interpretations of the tone of ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡±; some critics have seen this boy¡¯s memories as a recollection of a time of abuse. In our text book, it is said that the tone of the poem seems nostalgic, though not sentimentally so. ¡°The boy, now a man, remembers his father as ¡°papa,¡± clearly an affectionate term. The high-spirited bouncing rhythm of the poem seems to counter any indication that the father¡¯s drinking or the son¡¯s fears are its central concerns.¡±(Page 14) On the other hand, Hayden¡¯s poem is filled with guilty. ¡°He regrets how unappreciative of his father he was as a child.¡±(Page ) Children often become so boiled and self-involved that they take for granted what their parents give to them. ¡°What did I know, what did I know/of love¡¯s austere and lonely offices?¡± There will be a time that we realize their sacrifices and it is often too late to realize.

In conclusion, ¡°My Papa¡¯s Waltz¡± presents a conventional form that uses humorous languages and ¡°drunken¡± images to present an unforgettable memory that a man ¡°danced¡± with his father. Hayden¡¯s ¡°Those Winter Sundays¡± is a free verse style poem that uses simple languages and tactile images to convey the melancholy memories that a man ¡°misinterpreted¡± his father. In each poem, different form, image and tone is used, but the theme of the complicated love between the son and the father is conveyed through both poems.

In the future I plan to be a nurse. My major right now is nursing. I want to become a nurse because I care about people. I don't like to see people in pain. My plan so far is to attend college and do the best I can to get into the nursing program. I have been told by many people that becoming a nurse isn't easy, but they haven't scared me away from pursuing my dream. In order for me to get in I have to have at least a B average or I will be turned down. I promise myself that I would do it and I will because I don't make empty promises. I believe that I can do it because I have many people in my family who are nurses if they can become a nurse then I have no doubt in my mind that I can also.

Once I am in the nursing program, I will try to do my best. After I complete college I will attend a nursing school. In the end I hope that I will become a registered nurse hopefully, I will get a job in a hospital or a nursing home. I haven't decided to do nursing for the money, so I will take a job anywhere that needs me, no matter what the pay is just as long as I can make a difference. Once I am settled in my job, I plan to continue my education. There are always advances in medicine so it's important that I am aware of it. If I have a lot of education and skill, then I'll always be able to get a job. My mother tells me that the farther I go in getting an education, the better my chances are for success and comfortable living.

I have been interested in medicine for as long as I can remember. I would watch all the television programs that have to do with medicine. The shows that I would watch were about things such as major surgery, birth, and emergency situations like a shooting or car accident. I always wondered what it would feel like to save a person's life. I wondered what it feels like to be those doctors and nurses. So when I become a nurse, I will finally know what it feels like. I first thought about becoming a nurse when I was watching a movie about a woman with cancer. I wanted so very much to help ease her pain. I watched how the doctor and the nurses looked after her and I knew that I could do the same.

Once I have been a nurse for a good long time, I am going to start my own business that will take care of individuals that aren't very fortunate. I plan to work on under privileged people; I have heard many stories of people not being treated because they do not have the means to pay. I don't believe that because someone doesn't have enough money, they don't deserve a chance to be healthy the same way as a person with money. I have seen programs about children that are very sick and they just need a little caring to get better, but their parents don't have much money so they can't afford to go to the doctor. I once watched a show about a woman who died when she only needed a special injection to keep her alive, but she couldn't because there wasn't any money left for her to receive the drug she needed. When I am a nurse I intend to work on people even if they don't have the money for medical attention.

My life plans are very important to me; it's has basically given me a reason for being here on earth. My purpose will be to give people caring and understanding. The lives of people will be in my hands and I hope that I will help make them live a long and healthy life. I will be very happy when I have succeeded in doing all I have planned. If I only end up being a nurse that is still an accomplishment in its own.
