Reviving Ophelia

Adolescent girls growing up in today's society endure many more hardships than in previous years. Adolescence is no longer a time of endless sunny days spent on the back porch with a glass of country time lemonade and a smile extending ear to ear. Adolescence for girls is now generalized as a dark and depressing period of life that often seems hopeless and never ending. Our society has changed for the worse even though we are persuaded to think that we are moving in the right direction. Adolescent girls are drowning in confusion as they try to sort out details in their life, and decide whom they really want to please. Among American girls there is more depression, eating disorders, addictions, self-mutilation, and suicides than ever before. I really feel that Pipher mainly emphasizes the major problems adolescent girls are now facing, the causes of these problems, and how as a society and individually we can deal and change this reoccurring depressing pattern our teenage girls are following. Pipher blames the low self respect of adolescent girls everything from parents to peers, but mainly faults our society as a whole. Pipher also points out that intelligent girls are more prone to depression because they are more aware of their surroundings and therefore more aware of the new constraints they face as they leave childhood. Our society idealizes tall, dark and very skinny women. Television, movies, and magazines are at the root of glamorizing thinness and sexuality, and even encouraging the use of drugs. Our society also puts women on the back burner. Men are wonderful, powerful, and successful and women need to put sugar and crème in their coffee. Schools treat girls and boys differently. Boys are twice as likely to be seen as role models, more likely to receive teachers attention, and more likely to speak up in class. Junior high school is when girls began to drop in their academics. This may be due to the fact that girls place being popular as a higher priority, or they might give up on their hopeless efforts at trying to gain the teacher's approval. One thing that I noticed while reading "Reviving Ophelia" is that two girls can come from totally different backgrounds, be a part of different social cliques, and have an enormous gap between their intelligence but still have the confusion and anxiety of becoming a woman as a common bond. Girls during adolescents cannot think clearly; everything is a dramatic event. Sometimes, a girl going through the stress of adolescence just needs emotional comfort. This was true of Cindy age fourteen who was brought in for depression. Happiness and a cheerful attitude towards life can even assist with physical conditions as in this case. Personally, I know how much it means just to have a person to rely on. I can have the worst day of my life, but then I will talk with one of my very good friends and I am always laughing by the end of our conversation. Basically, we have to blame ourselves for letting the self-esteem for adolescent girls get this low. Adolescent girls deal with more and more every day. Divorce, abuse, rape, and criticism are just few of life's struggles many girls face in our society. To cope with these struggles a plethora of girls choose to use drugs or alcohol, self mutilate, and engage in unhealthy sexual relationships to hide their pain and fear. Control is the main ingredient girls are searching for while doing these things. Anorexics lose control of everything else, so eating is the only thing they feel that they have a say in. Many young girls are so concerned with making other people feel better that they forget about their own problems. Throughout "Reviving Ophelia", Pipher urges change to take place in our society and in each household. Girls need love from family and friends, meaningful work, respect, challenges and safety. We also need to promote identities based on talents and interests rather than appearance and sexuality. Schools need to have classes that teach good habits for coping with stress, self-nurturing skills, and a purpose for life. Pipher encourages parents and society to recognize and take responsibility for neglecting to care for our adolescent girls. She insists that we can do more for adolescents by just listening than anything else. Learning comes so much from just listening. Girls should search deep for their values and beliefs. Relaxation is also a main aspect that girls need to practice. I think two of the most basic skills that Pipher says girls need, making choices and managing pain, are also the toughest. It is also difficult for girls to manage pain because at this age they take everything so personal. Adolescent girls basically need to put blinders on to prevent seeing any bad, they need to concentrate on the good times when they had no worries, unfortunately most adolescent girls "crawl in a deep dark hole" where light is no longer remembered. In conclusion, Mary Pipher's main point in writing "Reviving Ophelia" is to reveal how adolescent girls are being neglected and overlooked. We must be willing to look beyond the surface, become involved, and support girls as they develop physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. We must strive for something better for our teens. We cannot keep labeling our "daughters and sisters", instead we have got to give them a path that leads to self-esteem. The media will give the public what they are search for. Right now that has been women roles that are lessened and more sexualized for the pleasures of men.

YOu guys say free but its really not. YOu should be ashamed of yourselves for leading unsuspecting kids into believing your shit!!!! Why would you say free when its not. There should be laws against you people lieing the way you do. Whats sad is you make a living off these kids and they are none the wiser. Its unbelievable the money you charge these kids for work that you probably stole from another unsuspecting kid that didnt know any better. IM sure he gave you these essays for free and you told him is was for the greater good of all students. The birth of a child is a wonderful and exciting experience. My experience began while I was still in high school and taking a medical technology course. This course provided insight into child birth I might never have received. On July 17, 00 my own journey into the world of child rearing began. Pregnancy for me meant a whole new world was beginning and another ending. When you first find out you are pregnant for some people its exhilarating and wonderful, for others is plain frightening. Many have described pregnancy and child birth as the best and worst time of their lives. For me it was both. This math problem that I have been faced with is to figure out how much grass the

cow can graze. He is attached to a piece of 50ft rope. It is attached 10 meters from the

corner on the longest side of the barn that is measuring at 60 meters by 0 meters. This

math problem took a while to figure out. I used addition, multiplication and division toCustom Essays on I dont have one

solve the problem.

The first step I used was to analyze the situation. Then I drew a diagram

of the barn and where the rope was fastened with the cow. I then found the area in which

the rope was able to rotate around the barn. I added one hundred and fifty to one

side since the rope could only reach fifty meters to the left, right and straight out.

Because the rope was stationed ten meter down from the corner, that left forty meters

so the rope would only reach forty meters across the end of the barn. After that there was

forty meters which is fully extended to the side of the barn then thirty meters which was

added to the one hundred fifty meters and subtracted from forty. There was ten meters

left that could be added from the side of the barn to straight which would be twenty

meters. After adding and subtracting all of that the answer I got was 5,5.5 meters of

grazing for the cow.

I believe the answer came up with is right. Because of all the diameters and

measurements I have. I'm eighty percent sure that I did all my math right I'm sure that

my answer is 5,5.5 meters.

Is one capable of dramatic change throughout the course of his life? Oedipus appears to have metamorphosed from being a stubborn, hubris dictator in Oedipus Rex, to an admirable and modest citizen in Oedipus at Colonus. Looks can be deceiving, just as Oedipus was deceived of the truth he once knew. Throughout the course of Sophocles' plays, Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus, Oedipus portrays equivalent characteristics in three main areas superiority, determination, and courage.

Throughout his life, Oedipus continually proves that he is better than others. At the commencement of the play Oedipus Rex, Oedipus is proud, for the people of Thebes have beckoned him to extinguish the plague. The people of Thebes summon Oedipus for he is "no god, [but] omnipotent with gods" (6). Oedipus believes he is the only person who endures the power to purge the plague, and that no other man, or god could protect Thebes. Oedipus announces, "Not for any far-flung friend,/but by myself and for myself I'll break this plague" (11). Oedipus is the perfection of all; he is faultless in his ways. Words could neither batter nor bruise him, for no insult could be true. When Oedipus is asked if he would like to hear the report from Creon publicly, his response is "Speak out to all. It's more for them than me, though more my own than my own soul" (8). Throughout Oedipus' search for the truth of his origin, he does not cease to hear the news inside his corridors, for he does not fear what others have to say. At Colonus, Oedipus maintains dominance over others, although he is no longer the sovereign king of Thebes. Oedipus believes he has done nothing shameful and wrong throughout the history of his life. Oedipus realizes that he did not fulfill the prophecy, but the prophecy had already been fulfilled, thus he was "all ignorant toward a doom too known/to those who planned it" (10). It was not within Oedipus' control to be a parricide, because he was not capable of acting with full knowledge. Oedipus, the vagabond, would not be at fault for the destruction of Thebes by Creon and Eteocles. He preaches to Creon "Once in agony I turned against myself/and cried aloud for banishment. . . Then you had me routed out and cast out,/Fine affection that for family ties" (11). Oedipus would not take the blame for his own flesh and blood, because he believed he had suffered enough for his tragic flaw. Oedipus is not willing to confront his son, Polyneices, because Oedipus abhors him. It was his own son who had cast him out of Thebes. During the confrontation of Oedipus and Polyneices, Polyneices remarks, "You are silent./Say something, Father, please./Don't turn away form me./Have you reply?/Will you send me off in mute contempt?" Oedipus would not even face Polyneices, for he did not believe he deserved his respect.

Oedipus continues to carry out his strong point of view throughout the course of these plays. Throughout Oedipus' venture to seek the truth of his identity, he comes across many roadblocks, but he proceeds to knock them down. Tiresias, the blind seer, refuses to reveal the murderer of Laius, for his "lips are sealed" (1). Oedipus will not accept Tiresias' unwillingness, thus he replies "I suspect you of the very murder even" (0). Tiresias does not want to be convicted of murder, therefore he presents the truth to Oedipus. Oedipus is warned various times by his wife, Jocasta, "…don't proceed! For your own life's sake, stop!" but he does not acknowledge her pleading (57). Oedipus sends for the shepherd to help his investigation, but the shepherd is not willing to cooperate. Oedipus is willing to go to all lengths to find out his origin, even violence. Oedipus declares, "You won't talk for pleasure?/Then perhaps you'll talk for pain," as he raises a threatening hand (64). Within Oedipus at Colonus, Oedipus is determined to become "your city's [Athens'] champion and the scourge/of all my enemies" (11). He will not even allow his own son to persuade him otherwise. Oedipus is determined to fulfill the prophecy.

Oedipus exemplifies courage throughout the course of his life. Before Oedipus had become the King of Thebes, he "stumbled here [Thebes] without a hint/could snuff her [the Sphinx] out by human wit" (). Oedipus risked his life to save the city of Thebes. Oedipus faces the truth of his identity, "wishing . . . my soul on fire/even death by stoning,/but no man was found to further that desire" (111). Oedipus suffered the harsh consequences of his actions, banishment, without committing suicide. Oedipus became skeptical about the prophecy, debating whether the oracles were correct. Throughout Oedipus' search for his true identity, he questions the prophecy, which is disrespectful to the all-powerful gods. In the play Oedipus at Colonus, Oedipus is brave when he confronts Creon, for Creon has come to Athens accompanied by guards. Oedipus frantically says, "That clap of thunder beating down from Zeus/beckons me to Hades realms./So hurry, someone, hurry," as he tries to prolong his life (16). Oedipus makes Zeus wait, because he still needs to show Theseus his holy hidden tomb.

Throughout Sophocles' plays, Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus, Sophocles portrays the difficulty for one to change within a lifetime. Oedipus' characteristics remain firm in three significant areas superiority, determination, and courage. These characteristics show Oedipus during both his downfall and his uprising to the level of supremacy. The idea that sometimes what one considers his finest quality ends up being his greatest fault, is resembled throughout the Oedipus plays.

The poems show two very different views of the sea, and it's power over people.

The poem "Milly and Molly and May" paints a picture of the sea as a warm place filled with happiness. The beach is a place filled with adventured to go on and things to play with. It described the sea as a place of re-discovery, where you can go to remember whom you really are inside. It leaves you with a contempt felling, it is as if you were ever to lose yourself or have a problem, the sea would put you back on the right track.

In the poem "Sea Fever" it portrays a very different view of the sea. The sea is written to be a cold place. The sea is a place of work in solitude, a place that is dreaded and put of going to. It is a cold, windy and, demanding place, which calls you to come to it. It is as if it has control over you and you are a slave to it and, also that you are a slave to the life you have. It leaves you with a cold feeling, as if there is no control over life.

In the poem "Milly Molly and May" it gives the idea that there is control over live, it is just that the sea redirects that path that is being taken. It is a jolly place of fun and dancing a place that you want to go to and play. Contrary to the poem "Sea Fever" where it seem that the people in the poem are a slave to their way of life. That the sea has control of them and they are but it's puppets made to do it's bidding. Both poems have different view of the sea, but no two people look at one thing the same way. For thousands and thousands of years now, people have watched the moon and stars in the night sky. Galileo Galilei was one of these people. He confirmed that the Earth and other planets revolved around the sun. This brings up a question with a universe as large as the one we currently live in today, is it possible that there are other life forms also living with us? No one knows for sure whether or not life exists outside planet earth today.

Mankind has not yet explored every single inch of space amongst us. There may be other planets around stars which may also have planets capable of supporting life, like earth is like to the sun. Until people can explore such areas, people will have no definitive idea whether or not life really does exist outside our planet.

The main question is that should we believe that there are other life forms in the universe, or do we need to believe that there are. In the world we live in today, there are many unexplained phenomenon that occur. Some people believe that this unnatural phenomenon could be the result of extraterrestrials (ET) or life from outer space. There are many different phenomenons in which people believe may be related to extraterrestrials, such as unidentified flying objects (UFO's), alien sightings, alien abductions and crop circles. However, these phenomenons, until proved, may or may not actually be a result of extraterrestrials.

The Era of the Ideal American Life

The 150's is thought of today as a time of nostalgic bliss (especially for the right wing conservatives), it was a time of sameness, conformity and "blending in;" it featured the perfect family, with the perfect life, sheltered in the perfect little house. People were assaulted with this image in every advertisement, television or radio show. They became obsessed with fitting the image.

Following the end of World War II, Americans had a grand desire to move on with their lives and promoted a return to normalcy. Marriage ceremonies were being performed in massive numbers and following those marriages there was a boom in babies. The citizens of The United States were ready to settle into a comfortable and safe way of life. The war had caused too much suffering and neglect and "by 145 almost every-one had a long list of unfilled material wants." "Never before had material products that Americans associated with 'the good life'-automobiles, dishwashers, stereos, televisions, and more-become so readily available to large segments of the population." It was a decade whose morality and values were centered on the media and it's depiction of "real life". The materialistic decade of the 150s was also a decade of conformity. The acquisition of material goods, which had been scarce in the Great Depression and during World War II, became the main focus of postwar lives. Material goods such as cars and other household items had become more affordable to middle class families and were viewed as an important addition to the suburban family. "Most citizens embraced the material benefits of prosperity as evidence of the virtue of 'the American way." This significant acquisition of goods was driven especially by the new way the media of television and advertising portrayed the suburban family life as the ideal.

Each family consisted of a mom, dad and children; gone were the days of living with extended family. "Unlike many urban neighborhoods, where immigrant parents or grandparents might be living on the same block…single family dwellers often left their relatives and in-laws behind. As a result, ethnic lifestyles were less pronounced in the suburbs." The dad went off to work each day to earn a living and put food on his family's plates while the mother took care of the children and did the housework (in pearls and flawless makeup no less). Conformity was everywhere in America - from cars to clothes, from social behavior to politics. Most women had one choice conform to be a housewife and mother. Most men dreamed only of success in the corporate world. It was an ideal society of "economic and racial homogeneity."

Despite the tempting calls of suburbia and consumer America, there were those who were against it. Jack Kerouac and Allan Ginsberg were the founders of the Beats, a group of professed bohemian writers who fiercely opposed the conformity of American society. "According to Kerouac, the word beat had various definitions and connotations for the writers such as despair over the beaten state of the individual in mass society and belief in the beatitude, or blessedness, of the natural world and in the powers of the beat of jazz music and poetry." Their works of art expressed contempt for the mindless American who followed the media/money driven culture of their time as well as sorrow for the loss of the "individual." The art that they produced went against all of the "ideals" of the 150's; everything that the typical American was "supposed" to dream of was subject to criticism by the beats. The beats were among the first radicals to dapple in drug use and experiment with their sexuality openly, for conservative America this was shocking. "Through their journey of social revolution, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac began their quest with one idea for America in mind Truth." They felt that Americans were so caught up in consumer culture that they had lost all sight of what was really important or "true" in life. Their poetry and literature are now revered as some of the finest works of art today, but ironically their message is still in need of enforcement.

In schools, students will be disciplined if they do any of the following; fail to follow reasonable and clear instructions from a teacher, behave in such a way as to threaten the health of a student or teacher, commit an act of violence or cause significant damage or destruction to property, or if knowingly involved in the theft of property.

Also, if they possess, use or deliberately assist others in the use of illegal substances, behave in a way which threatens the good order of the schools program or facilities, consistently behave in a manner which interferes with the educational opportunities of any other pupil, engages in unacceptable discriminatory behaviour or harassment of another person, and is over the age of 15 years and fails to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided by the school, they can be suspended for up to 10 days. In extreme cases, the student can be expelled from the school.

I think that these days, when a student does something wrong, and are suspended, they are really just getting days off. It is not discipline, the way they get to stay home and do what they want most of the time. It is just like a holiday to them, so when they do something wrong, they don't mind getting suspended. These days, discipline is not hard on students. The discipline we get does not leave any effect on us, unlike the discipline in the old days, where they would be hit with a can or paddle. This kind of discipline would leave an effect on the students these days, as years ago, the students were too scared of the punishment, to do anything wrong.

My opinion is that they should change the discipline system to be harsher, so the students will think twice before making any trouble. They should not suspend the students and send them home, the students should get an in-school suspension where they have school duties or school work that they have missed. Weekend detention should also be introduced, as this would make the students change their ways because they would not like to spend all their weekends at school when they could be elsewhere.Do my essay on Schools should have stronger discipline CHEAP !

Overall, my opinion is that schools should have stronger discipline, as students would not behave so badly if they know the discipline was harsher. The discipline these days does not affect students in the slightest so students have no reason that can hold them back from breaking the rules.
