Audre Lorde was an outsider in more ways than one in the society she was living in and chose to write about. From the time she was four, her characteristics and outer appearances held qualities which enhanced this outsider status. One friend, who invited her to dinner, had parents whom not only disapproved of Lorde because she was black, but because she lived alone. Another major factor in characterizing Lorde's outsider status is the fact that she was a lesbian. Her first lesbian encounter was with Ginger, yet she knew something about her sexuality was unconventional way before. I think that her awareness of this may have started with Toni, the little girl who Lorde had met on the stairs outside one day. She had wanted to touch and feel Toni all over to make sure she was real. The second person who opened this awareness to her was Gennie, yet she did not know it was that type of love yet. She knew Gennie as her first real friend, and only later understood her loving for Gennie. After Ginger, she had many other relationships with women. All of these at first were uneasy for Lorde. Meeting women was hard. She had to mainly go to bars, yet she did not like to drink. She says in her story that she felt as if she was the only one. She saw many white women who were lesbians, but it was hard to find other black women who were lesbians.

She had been shocked by the fact that she had seen another girl from her college at a gay bar one night. For a while she had seen herself as the only one in college who was a lesbian. Many times in her life was she shocked by who she saw in the bars or who noticed her as being a lesbian, before she had given any indication of her sexual preference.

The combination of being black and being a lesbian was overwhelming for Lorde. She knew that being woman alone was hard. She knew that being a black woman was even harder. Through in the fact that she chose an alternative lifestyle in choosing life partners and it would feel like the weight of world was on your shoulders. She struggled throughout the entire book with all of these things not only with the society around her, but with in her own mind also. Towards the end of the relationship, when Muriel begins to wander, she writes of herself like she is looking in on a scene from the outside with no control over the situation. We predict that the corrugated card will be the best insulator. We predict this because corrugated cardboard has pockets of air inside it and for heat to travel through air, convection needs to take place. It is harder for convection take places than it is for conduction to take place.

So, the corrugated card has the ability to keep warmth in whereas cotton does, but not as well as the cardboard.

Fair Test

To make sure that our experiment is fair, we will have only one variable. The variable will be the material, which we wrap around each copper can. We will wrap one can in a piece of cotton material and the other in corrugated card. We will keep the temperature the same and the times that we record the temperature the same.

Method

ɨ Firstly, collect all the required apparatus/equipment.

ɨ Wrap one copper can in corrugated card (once round) and fix it there with a piece of sellotape.

ɨ Now boil a kettle and when the water has boiled measure out two lots of 100ml and pour one lot into one copper can and the other into another can.

ɨ Now repeat the whole experiment again for a second time.

ɨ Take both sets of results and take an average for both.

From my results, I have found out that as time goes by, the temperature of the water decreases. I have found that the corrugated cardboard kept the water warmer for longer. I know this because after 10 minutes, the temperature of the water wrapped in Corrugated card was 60°c and the temperature of the water wrapped in the cotton material was 58.5°c.

The results that I got through doing this experiment the results do not seem to be proportional. The reason for this is because they don't follow a straight line.

Our prediction was correct. We said that we think that the corrugated cardboard will keep the water warmer for longer and we were correct. We mentioned that it is harder for convection to take place than it is for conduction to, this is proven through science lessons and the fact that the heat would have to travel through the pockets of air inside the corrugated cardboard.

The graph shows quite clearly that for both corrugated cardboard and cotton, the temperature decreases rapidly for the first 6 minutes. Then, for the next 4 minutes, the temperature of the water inside the corrugated cardboard didn't drop nearly as rapidly (65.5°c to 60°c). However, the temperature inside the cotton, still dropped quite a considerable amount (from 64°c to 58.5°c). This proves that corrugated cardboard keeps water warmer for longer.

The story A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner in my opinion was a very interesting story. The story was about a old and troubled woman named Emily Grierson who because of her father's death had become one of the towns obligation's and also one of it's problems. Emily a very stubborn old lady who refused to pay her taxes because of a little tale that Colonel Sartoris who was the mayor at the time had told her. He told her that her father had lent the town some money and because of it in a way of paying her back all of her taxes were remitted. Faulkner portrayed Emily's character to be very Stubborn and by the end made people think she was crazy. When he told her she had to pay her taxes Emily simply said "I have no taxes in Jefferson."(Faulkner, 14) The gentleman continued insisting that she pay her taxes. Emily believed so much that she was right that she continued to say "see Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson." (Faulkner, 14) This was the first time Faulkner showed how stubborn Emily could be. She told the alderman to leave and that was the end of it. The second incident that showed Emily was stubborn and a little crazy was when she went to that pharmacy to buy some poison. "I want some poison" "I want the best you have. I don't care what kind." (Faulkner, 145) This gave me the impression that she was a little crazy and that it was possible that she was dangerous. It also showed me that she could be very demanding.

Emily did many things that made her character seem stubborn and crazy. When she received the tax notices in the mail she simply through them into the garbage or mailed them right back without response. This showed us how stubborn she was. Miss Emily would manage to make her self disappear for a certain period of time. This would cause people to talk because no one would know where she was or what she was doing. At the end of the story when the town people were walking around her house they finally found what had caused her house to smell as bad as it did. It was Homer Baron. He was laid down on a bed that was in a locked room. This was when they knew she was crazy because she murdered her one lover that she ever had.

People in this town liked to gossip a lot about Miss Emily. When she went to buy the poison from the pharmacy, the town was convinced she was going to kill herself and that she was crazy. When her father had died people called and dropped by the house to give Miss Emily their condolences. For three years she told them that he was not dead and that he was still alive. She refused for her father's body to be disposed. The town thought she was crazy. One of the things they talked a lot about was Miss Emily's servant that worked for her. They made racial comments about him for example when Miss Emily's house started giving off some sort odor. People started complaining to a judge named Judge Stevens about the smell. All he could say was "It's probably a snake or a rat that Niger of hers killed in the yard" One lady who complained accused Miss Emily of smelling bad. Miss Emily was pitied throughout the town because she wasn't married. The reason for this was because every time a man wanted to have something to do with Emily her father would scare them away. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Race Relations

Mark Twain's novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, describes real life situations, in a fictional story line perfectly. Twain put the real life happenings of slavery, in a fun and fictional story. The novel is mainly about the racial relations between each human. Classes of society, loyalty/friendship, and rebellion shows how the novel evolves into a main theme of Race Relations.

Throughout the history of the world, people have been placed into categories based on their wealth, and all of the worldly possessions that we have. These classes of society can really make people talk, and act differently towards some people. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the novel shows these classes really well. In the beginning of the novel, we see a little bit of the black class, and how they were treated. "Miss. Watson's big nigger, named Jim, was setting in the kitchen door, we could see him pretty clear" (14). Jim, Miss. Watson's run away slave in the story, is part of the black class. We see the sub ordinance that blacks were placed in America, because blacks were not allowed to be in the house, because they were uneducated, and had to be working in the fields.

Another example of the classes we put each other into is when Huck, the main character, and Jim were heading south. Jim and Huck are sitting on the banks of the Mississippi River, and Jim says "I owns myself en I's wuth eight hund'd dollars." (54). This shows the reader that blacks are so low, that the white people place prices on the blacks. As uneducated as the blacks are, they believe they are worth so much money, because that is all they hear from their owners. By doing such a thing to another human being, that degrades our country, and the black citizens themselves.

At the end, we see how these classes can effect one person, due to his social status. Like before, people say things to other people, to make themselves feel better, and they do not care what it does to the person they are talking about, because of their class in society. One example of this is when "They cussed Jim considerably, though, and give him a cuff or two upside the head" (71). This shows how people can be when one group thinks that he is better than another group. These classes of society can show the relations between races. In this case, the whites thought they were better, and so, they would not allow blacks to be in the house, make them feel like objects, and not human beings and greatly persecuted and abused the blacks.

Another point that is with the main theme of race relations is loyalty/friendship. Huck shows this by being with Jim in the beginning, and shows some trust in Jim. The beginning of this friendship is seen when Huck goes to Jim with a problem with his Father coming back, and Jim says " sometimes he spec he'll go 'way, en den ag'in he spec he'll stay" (6). That response from Jim really shows the reader that he cares about Huck, and he understands what Huck is saying. Like any relationship, it has to have an open, honest and submit caring feelings for one another. Jim proves that he cares by helping Huck, and telling the truth, even when it hurts.

Later on in the novel, Jim and Huck are going down the river, and Huck is continuously faced with the same problem. Huck does not know whether to turn Jim in or not. When a problem comes up, people can see how loyal or how much your friendship means to somebody when a problem occurs frequently. Huck says to himself "s'pose you'd a' done right and give Jim up? Would you felt better than what you do now? No, I'd feel bad-I'd feel just the same way I do now" (4). With that decision by Huck, that shows two people the same thing. This shows both Jim and the reader that Jim is too good of a friend to be back stabbed. With that decision, Huck proves his loyalty to Jim, no matter if he is black or white.

Finally, at the end of the novel, we find out how much Huck appreciated Jim's good attitude through the whole adventure of going to New Orleans. When "Tom give Jim forty dollars for being prisoner for us so patient…." (78), shows that Tom and Huck were very thankful for putting up with them, and their crazy ideas. The act of giving Jim the money proves Huck and Tom were very grateful for Jim's loyalty to do everything. The loyalty towards Huck was seen through the whole story. From being tied up, being painted or even being treated worse, Jim knew it was worth it. He was loyal and friendly towards the two children, because if it were not for them, he would still be a slave. Loyalty and friendship deals with race relations because even if somebody was black, or white, Huck showed that blacks were every bit as fun, caring and normal as the white people. Even if it meant rebelling against the law, loyalty and friendship was more important.

Speaking of rebelling, this is the final point for making this main theme race relations, the ultimate theme of the novel. Rebellion is another theme frequently seen through the whole novel. Huck rebels against his father, and the law. Huck's Father tells him to do one simple thing, but he rebels and does what he wants to any ways. The first thing is when his Father leaves him locked in the cabin. Huck obviously is supposed to stay inside, but he rebels and crawls out of the house. "He had wore the ground a good deal crawling out of the hole and dragging out so many things" (40). This shows him rebelling against his Father by not doing what he was supposed to do. He then runs away, and meets Jim, where he really rebels. This will be the start of a stronger friendship between Huck and Jim.

Speaking of Jim, he also rebels, but he rebels against the law. Jim made a big decision while there was a great deal of distraction with in the city. When Jim and Huck first met, Jim says "Well, I b'lieve you, Huck. I-I run off" (50). Jim tells Huck and Huck becomes very shocked and concerned for Jim. Huck tells Jim that he will help Jim escape, even if "People would call me a low-down Abolitionist" (50). When Huck says that, he promises Jim he will help to the end, no matter what happens. That only shows the reader that Jim can really trust Huck with anything, improving their relationship.

Finally at the end of the novel, we really see the respect Jim deserves as a human being. Through the many escapades and adventures the two of them went through, Jim is first treated like garbage once again. When Tom, Huck's one and only friend, Huck and Jim arrive at Aunt Sally's, Tom's aunt, house, Aunt Sally becomes outraged that the two of them helped a slave run away. Once she finally realizes everything Jim had done for Tom and Huck, "Aunt Polly and Uncle Silas and Aunt Sally found out how good he helped the doctor nurse fix Tom, they made a fuss, and fixed him up prime, and gave him all he wanted to eat, and a good time and nothing to do" (78). This is a big push for race relations and rebellion. Slaves are not supposed to eat and dress real nice and have nothing to do. Aunt Polly, Uncle Silas and Aunt Sally realized everything that Jim did, and, by being helpful, changed the minds of the three adults. They now viewed Jim as a person, and not a slave. By doing this, these few people strengthen the relationship between whites and blacks. They only did this because they looked inside, and found out what Jim really is about, and what he has to offer to the world.

Through history, blacks have been discriminated for being a different color, or because of what they do not have, or how they act. Classes of society, loyalty/friendship, and rebellion shows how people can strengthen the race relations between whites and blacks. If the world only breaks free of our hateful chains, and isolated cages, we can see that each of us are no different from one another. We have to open our eyes, take each other for our qualities, not over our skin color, or background.
