American Pie Don McLean

A long long time ago

I can still remember how that music used to make me smile

And I knew if I had my chanceOrder custom research paper on English Clipping Folder

That I could make those people dance

And maybe theyd be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver

With every paper Id deliver

Bad news on the doorstep

I couldnt take one more step

I cant remember if I cried

When I read about his widowed bride

But something touched me deep inside

The day the music died

{Refrain}

So bye-bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee

But the levee was dry

And them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye

Singin thisll be the day that I die

Thisll be the day that I die

Did you write the Book of Love

And do you have faith in God above

If the Bible tells you so

Do you believe in rock n roll

Can music save your mortal soul

And can you teach me how to dance real slow

Well, I know that youre in love with him

Cause I saw you dancin in the gym

You both kicked off your shoes

Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin buck

With a pink carnation and a pickup truck

But I knew I was out of luck

The day the music died

I started singin

{Refrain}

Now for ten years weve been on our own

And moss grows fat on a rollin stone

But thats not how it used to be

When the jester sang for the King and Queen

In a coat he borrowed from James Dean

And a voice that came from you and me

Oh, and while the King was looking down

The jester stole his thorny crown

The courtroom was adjourned

No verdict was returned

And while Lenin read a book of Marx

The quartet practiced in the park

And we sang dirges in the dark

The day the music died

{Refrain}

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter

The birds flew off with a fallout shelter

Eight miles high and falling fast

It landed foul out on the grass

The players tried for a forward pass

With the jester on the sidelines in a cast

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume

While the Sergeants played a marching tune

We all got up to dance

Oh, but we never got the chance

Cause the players tried to take the field

The marching band refused to yield

Do you recall what was revealed

The day the music died

We started singing

{Refrain}

Oh, and there we were all in one place

A generation Lost in Space

With no time left to start again

So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick

Jack Flash sat on a candlestick

Cause fire is the Devils only friend

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage

My hands were clenched in fists of rage

No angel born in hell

Could break that Satans spell

And as the flames climbed high into the night

To light the sacrificial rite

I saw Satan laughing with delight

The day the music died

He was singing

{Refrain}

I met a girl who sang the blues

And I asked her for some happy news

But she just smiled and turned away

I went down to the sacred store

Where Id heard the music years before

But the man there said the music woudnt play

And in the streets the children screamed

The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed

But not a word was spoken

The church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire most

The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost

They caught the last train for the coast

The day the music died

And they were singing

{Refrain}

They were singing bye-bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee

But the levee was dry

Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye

Singin thisll be the day that I die

AMERICAN PIE by Don McLean

The song "American Pie" by Don McLean is a timeless favourite of many people around the world and has been voted number 5 in a poll to discover the best songs of the twentieth century. The song it self is a English students dream as it has hundreds of metaphors, imagery, alliteration, rhyme too name a few but most importantly it relates strongly to change.

The song is biographical and presents an abstract story of Don McLean's life from the mid 50s until when he wrote the song in the late 60s. It is almost entirely symbolised by the evolution of popular music over these years and represents a change from the lightness of the 150s to the darkness of the late 60s. This is also very symbolic of the change occurring in America during this era. In Don McLean's life the transition from light (the innocence of childhood) to the darker realities of adulthood probably started with the death of Buddy Holly and culminated with the death of his father in 161 and with the assassination of President Kennedy in 16. These three people are represented in the song as "The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost" however probably not in that order.

Neil Armstrong

"That's one small step for man, and one giant leap for man kind"

Neil Armstrong only did two famous things in his life one of which was simply being the first man on the moon and the other was to say possibly the most important words in the history of the human race, the words he said don't even take up one line on a page but if you look at the sentence and split it in half you could write a book on it.

If the words weren't written for him then he must have spent a lot of time thinking for the write ones. Because this sentence in short, means while physically he I just stepping of the ship, really what he is doing is proving to the world that America is superior showing all the scientific advances, proving wrong all the millions of people who said man would never walk on the moon and setting down the foundations for future space exploration. Neil Armstrong changed the way all humans view life and death.

Dr Christiaan N. Barnard, South African surgeon

Dr Christiaan N. Barnard was the first man to perform a successful heart transplant. On December , 167, fifty-three-year-old Lewis Washkansky received the first successful heart transplant at a Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Surgeon Christiaan Barnard, who trained at the University of Cape Town, performed the revolutionary medical operation. Washkansky, a grocer who suffered from chronic heart disease, received the transplant from Denise Darvall, a twenty-five-year-old woman who had been fatally injured in a car accident.

In the speech Dr Christiaan N. Barnard explains some of the training and involved in performing a Heart transplant and also some of the procedures, which took place on the operating table. The change that takes place isn't really in the text but occurs because of the text, it signifies the change of the human race from a primitive culture to a almost godly culture were we are able to give life, take life, extend life and shorten life.

The Patriot

The Movie the patriot was directed by Roland Emmerich tells the story of an American colonial farmer in 1776 named Benjamin Martin who is forced to take up arms and fight against the British and King George III

In the movie many changes take place however the first major change occurs when the British colonel Tavington (Jason Isaacs) murders Thomas, one of Benjamin's older sons, the rage quickly burns inside of Benjamin and he chases of after the British soldiers and managers to kill about twelve of them. This is such an enormous change as up until then Benjamin had been a pacifist, totally against the war and wanted nothing to do with it, also it provides the viewer with a small image into his background because, as we see him kill the soldiers it is evident that Benjamin is battle hardened and has had many years experience, in war.

Also in this movie some of the main characters go through a personal change "changing self" this is shown at various points in the film as Benjamin falls in love with another woman, and Benjamin goes from being a devoted father, to a merciless warrior, who is only killing people for revenge of his two dead sons, to a patriot who will die for his cause. (Later his country) and finally a lover.

Shrek

The movie Shrek tells the very clichstory about a valiant knight who must go and save the beautiful princess from a tower guarded by a mighty dragon, however with a twist. The twist being that there is no valiant night instead it is a ogre that has been bribed by that king and his annoying companion who just wont go away.

The change that occurs in the film is in the ogre, at the beginning of the film the ogre (shrek) has himself, his swamp and his small house and that's the way he likes it, but when the deed to his beloved swamp gets stolen from him he must go and rescue the princess in order to get it back. After a battle here and there he rescues the princess and on the way home realises that he is in love with the princess. So the change that occurs is self change where shek goes from a grumpy totally self centred inconsiderate ogre who is only doing this errand to get his swamp back, to a kind, loving and gentle one.
